My Morning Jacket @ Centennial Park – Atlanta: Setlist

HT faves My Morning Jacket returned tonight to play a set at Centennial Park in Atlanta, their first gig since January. MMJ’s set was part of the Big Dance festivities to celebrate the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Final Four, which will be held at the nearby Georgia Dome on Saturday and Monday.

You can watch a webcast of the set here.

Jim James and Co. came out of the gates with the rare opener call of Magheetah before offering off a double dose of songs from their most recent LP, Circuital, in the album’s title track and Outta My System. The Louisville-based band didn’t display any rust as they moved through staples I’m Amazed and Off The Record, connecting each song in the opening segment with noisy, fuzz-laden interludes. Lay Low showcased duel lead theatrics from James and Carl Broemel before dissolving into a whirl of feedback out of which Victory Dance emerged. Jim took an opportunity to welcome the crowd and espouse what a beautiful night it was in between First Light and Wordless Chorus and later dusted off his trusty Omnichord for Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Part 2. More Circuital material came in the form of Holdin’ On To Black Metal which was followed by romps through classics Gideon and Anytime. The power-packed, 80-minute set ended the way many MMJ festival sets do, with One Big Holiday.

Setlist

Set: Magheetah > Circuital > Outta My System > I’m Amazed > Off The Record, Lay Low > Victory Dance > First Light, Wordless Chorus, Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Part 2, Holdin’ On To Black Metal, Gideon, Anytime, One Big Holiday

There are currently no future My Morning Jacket performances scheduled.

Pro-Shot Official Video: Paul Simon Pays Tribute To Phil Ramone

It would be hard to find an obituary of Phil Ramome, the famed producer who passed away last weekend, without the name Paul Simon turning up. Ramone helped define Simon’s sound as a solo artist having produced 1973′s There Goes Rhymin’ Simon, 1975′s Still Crazy After All These Years and 1980′s One Trick Pony – a trio of exceptional albums that are far different from each other.

At a recent show in Australia, Simon took a moment to pay tribute to his close friend and collaborator as a lead-in to Slip Slidin’ Away. Paul has shared pro-shot video of the dedication and the song…

Stormy Mondays: The Mother Hips

While Tim Bluhm may be getting more nationwide face time lately as one of his wife Nicki Bluhm’s Gramblers, thanks to that band’s constant touring schedule and sensational YouTube Van Sessions performances, in The Mother Hips he is still a rock star front man without equal. Trademarked as “California Soul,” the band’s slick songs about beaches, frustration, social awkwardness and the act of songwriting itself, served up with double guitar licks, driving backbeat and falsetto shouts, are pure pleasure – hard rocking and soothing in turns and entirely catchy. A Hips tune can get lodged in your brain instantly and stay there for days, all from just a lick or line from Tim or co-founder Greg Loiacono.

[Photo via The Mother Hips' Facebook Page]

So this week’s Stormy Monday is a mix of live material mostly from recent years. The opening sequence comes from the tail end of a show late last year (a especially fat, dense recording at that): a kicking Been Lost Once > Rich Little Girl, followed by Can’t Sleep at All > the Beatles-esque Singing Seems to Ease Me > Can’t Sleep at All. From early in 2011 we also have a big dose of more psychedelic Hips with a long take on Third Floor Story > Magazine, the pairing stretching well over 15 minutes. Another side of the band’s long-form approach is represented by the in and out, switch it up turns and twists of Chum, and to finish things out there’s a rockin’ version of Stoned On Up The Road. It’s about an hour’s worth of some truly great music from a truly great band. Make sure you check it out, especially if you’re not yet familiar with Mother Hips – you’ll be happy you did.

Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Phoenix Rises Again

Prior to 2009 if you had asked most music fans if they had heard of Phoenix, they’d likely have thought that you were talking about Arizona’s capital city and not the Parisian act. That all changed with the release of the band’s fourth studio album – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The record featured ear-wormy electro-disco-rock tracks like Lasso, 1901 and Lisztomania, which propelled Thomas Mars & Co. from a little known underground band to a critical and commercial success story seemingly overnight. While they had their hype machine working early, with a song featured during the Super Bowl, the band’s big break came when they made their debut appearance on Saturday Night Live, where they have the rare distinction of playing three songs on the long-running late-night sketch show.

With Phoenix gearing up for the release of their long-awaited follow-up Bankrupt!, which hits stores on April 23, the band made a return trip to 30 Rock, as they were once again booked to perform at Studio 8H this past weekend. While they only got the standard two song appearance this time around, the band offered up takes on the album’s lead single Entertainment, as well as the brand new tracks Trying To Be Cool / Drakkar Noir. Let’s check it out..

Cover Alert: Brock Butler – Back In The High Life (Steve Winwood)

A few weeks back Brock Butler played a solo acoustic show at Pawley’s Island Tavern in South Carolina, where he offered his usual mix of covers from the ’60s through today, sung and performed as only he can. Among the groups Butler covered at the March 28th performance were Ryan Adams, Pete Townshend, Adele, Massive Attack, Paul Simon, Sublime, Pearl Jam and Mumford and Sons.

Taper Chris Davis recorded Brock’s show and has posted a fantastic soundboard matrix to the Live Music Archive. Today we want to shine a light on Butler’s cover of Back In The High Life by Steve Winwood which he performed at Pawley’s Island. Back In The High Life was the title track to Winwood’s blockbuster 1986 album that featured backing vocals from James Taylor. Brock does Winwood proud with his solo acoustic version…

Hands Off: Axe Falls On Hands On A Hardbody

After years of hard work and many re-writes and rejiggering, Hands On A Hardbody finally debuted on Broadway last month. Sadly, it’s run won’t last too long as the producers of the musical, which features music written by Phish front man Trey Anastasio and Broadway veteran Amanda Green, have announced that HoaHB will close following this Saturday’s performance according to a report from the New York Times.

It’s too bad because it was an entertaining musical, but we can see how the story of Texans fighting for the right to take home a truck didn’t translate to the Great White Way. As for Big Red, regardless of the show’s short run, he accomplished his dream of writing music for a Broadway musical and no one can take that away from him. It also received a rave review from the New York Times, something that can’t be said of many musicals.

Reports surfaced last week that the musical was in trouble as New York Post theater scribe Michael Riedel warned HoaHB was losing nearly a quarter million dollars a week in an article posted in late March. According to the Times, the musical only took in 22% of the maximum possible amount it could garner over last week’s eight performances. In all, Hands On A Hardbody will have run for a total of 56 performances – 28 previews and 28 regular showings. Want to see HoaHB before it closes? “Rush” tickets are available at the box office for $32 the day of the show at the Brooks Atkinson Theater.

Tour Dates: What The Brothers Sang

$

It’s unfortunate that The Everly Brothers aren’t as fawned upon by the current generation of music fans as the acts that were heavily influenced by them. The duo, who are arguably the most successful recording duo of all-time, were known for their close harmony singing which fused early rock and roll with country and folk, and have been name checked by everyone from Simon & Garfunkel to The Beach Boys to The Beatles. As a way of paying homage to the work of Phil and Don Everly, the duo of Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Dawn McCarthy, who grew up listening to the Everlys’ music, released What the Brothers Sang earlier this year, a 13-track tribute record that serves as a great jumping off point for a new generation of music lovers. Bonnie “Prince” Billy and McCarthy have lined up a short summer tour that kicks off on July 17 at Vagabond Blues in Palmer, Alaska and includes a high profile appearance at this year’s installment of the Newport Folk Festival.

If you’re not into a night of Everly Brothers covers, then maybe you’ll be interested in one of these recently announced tours…

Tech Tuesday: Streaming the Grateful Dead With ListenToTheDead.com

$

The Grateful Dead and their fans have long been pioneers in technology. Among other things, the Dead helped spawn the popularity of internet communities with the WELL, was the first act to have a song embedded in a podcast, were the first to leverage mailing lists to communicate with fans, pushed concert recording technology limits and created the largest concert sound system to date with their Wall of Sound in 1974. Happily, fans continue to leverage technology to continue the quest to seamlessly catalog, collect and listen to every show from the world’s greatest band. A new site, ListenToTheDead.com, offers the easiest way yet to find and stream shows from the Dead’s massive catalog.

Dan Saewitz, the guy behind PhishVids, has put together a similarly streamlined and efficient site with ListenToTheDead.com. The brilliance of the site is two-fold. In addition to the utilitarian design allowing for blazing fast show selection and streaming, the site also allows for saving of custom playlists and sharing of links. While most of the site speaks for itself, I thought I’d ask the man behind it all a few questions. So read on as Hidden Track exclusively reveals the new site and talks with Dan about it, his motivation for creating it and future plans for what he likes to short-handedly refer to as Listen.

Parker Harrington:  Wow, this is just great. I’ve had the chance to test it out over the last week or so and really love how quick I can fire it up and listen to what I am looking for. Just last week, in an e-mail thread, someone mentioned Keith’s brilliance on the Eyes of the World from July 17th, 1976. Before I had even finished reading the email, I was already streaming it on my laptop. While I know I could have ultimately searched and navigated to the show on Archive.org, I loved the utility of Listen. Being able to easily share links and create playlists will be icing on the cake for most people I suppose. Can you tell me a little bit about the site? How it “works” and what’s behind it?

Dan Saewitz: Listen is a music streaming service crafted carefully for live music. I’m rolling out what is just the first of hopefully many bands’ live catalogs. Launching initially with what might be the world’s greatest live act was nothing short of obvious. I’d rather Listen start small and grow gracefully than try to do too much, too fast. Warning, confusion ahead: Listen is built on top of Backbone.js – a lightweight javascript framework for rich web applications. It’s powered by a node.js JSON api. The files are graciously being hosted and served by archive.org and for the security buffs, all passwords are hashed using bcrypt.

PH: What was your inspiration to build this?

DS: After spending the last few years working on PhishVids, I realized it’s often inconvenient to use YouTube, especially when all you’re doing is listening. Plus, the availability of video is dwarfed by the plethora of audio sources available. On PhishVids, we’d be lucky to get videos of one or two songs from a show, now we’re fortunate to have multiple sources for nearly every show.

PH: How long did it take to build?

DS: I came up with the idea over six months ago, but I didn’t have time to start working on it until a few weeks ago. Within three days, I had a prototype of the streaming site running smoothly off of my Phish collection. I’ve spent the past couple weeks cleaning up bugs, polishing the site, and adding support for other mediums such as Subsonic and Archive.org. In the process, I released two open source npm packages for the Subsonic and Archive APIs on my Github.

PH: I assume you’ve seen Phish Tracks?

DS: Just a few days after I finally sat down and started working on this project, Jeff Lang launched Phish Tracks. At first, I was hesitant to continue, since at the time my site only supported Phish, but after showing a few of my friends what I had built, they pushed me to continue. By the end of that week, the idea to build a Grateful Dead streaming site hit me like a load of bricks. Thanks to archive.org, it was insanely easy to get the site up and running in just a few hours. Unfortunately, the Phish site will take a bit longer to launch, but I couldn’t wait to get this in the hand’s of the users. I think it’s so fucking cool that the young fans who have only been listening to these bands for a couple years are capable of giving back to the community in such a vital way. Jeff has only been listening to Phish for a year and a half and I for three and a half. I owe a lot of great memories to live music, and it feels great to be able to contribute back to the fans.

PH: I love the fact that you can handle multiple instances of the same show. Exactly how many Dead shows are streamable now on Listen?

DS: Right now, Listen is streaming 8,643 unique tapes with some shows even having more than 10 recordings.

PH: Anyone can stream from the site, but what is the purpose of registering? You’ll be able to save playlists?

DS:  Registering doesn’t get you much, yet. The only feature as of now is the ability to create playlists. In the future, I hope to tie user accounts very closely to your real-life statistics. We all love listening and exploring shows that we were at. Also, I plan track all of your listening habits so you can see your coverage across the history of the band – but, I’d like to solidify the website and clean up bugs before that happens. Playlists are my little version of the Phish.net jamming charts. Essentially, each song in the playlists is capable of containing a little blurb, which will allow you to tell stories and leave notes as people peruse your songs.

PH: Does this work on mobile devices?

DS: Preliminary support for mobile devices is in place, albeit very rough. Over the next few months, this will be worked on heavily. We have some awesome ideas. The player uses HTML5 so it should work on your iPhone (hold it in landscape mode). As feedback rolls in, I’ll be able to improve the experience across Android devices.

PH: People can donate to help with server costs?

DS: I’m just a student hoping to improve the average Joe’s listening experience. Any donations will go directly to the maintenance of the site and any extra funds will be donated directly to Archive.org and The Mockingbird Foundation. You can even donate via bitcoin. Check the about page for more information.

PH: Can you download directly from the site?

DS: Unfortunately, many shows are stream only. We’d like to take it one step at a time, but this is definitely towards the top of the list of things to add.

PH: Any “hidden” features we should be aware of?

DS:  Use your space bar to pause. Arrow keys to go back and forth. Add ::3m30 to a song url to link directly to the time. Try out this Stella Blue -> Not Fade Away segue for example. There are a few others, but you’ll never find them.

[Sample Listen page. Note multiple show sources, source info, and link back to Archive.org page]

PH: You said other bands would be coming as well and mentioned your work getting your Phish site up. What about JGB, Ratdog, The Dead and all the other side incarnations? And is there an API for developers to use?

DS: Phish is most definitely coming. We ran into some hiccups, but I assure you we’ll have a Phish site up ASAP. As far as JGB and other Dead projects: You better believe it! And yes, there’s an API but it’s not ready for public use. If you’re capable of finding it, then you can use it (as long as whatever you use it for adheres to the appropriate licensing). Keep in mind that it’s rough and subject to change at any time.

PH: Any shows you’ve discovered or particularly enjoyed listening to while creating Listen?

DS: It would be unfair to call myself a Deadhead – I never got a chance to see the band live, but I have been spending a ton of time exploring their archives recently. Lately, I haven’t been able to stop listening to The Beautiful Jam (2/18/71 Dark Star > Wharf Rat > Dark Star). It’s just one of those pieces of music that is timeless from the second you first hear it.

PH:  What is the most exciting thing about being a live music fan right now?

DS:  With the advent of fast internet, we’re listening and watching more and more live music as it’s happening. This will only become more and more ubiquitous. Entire band’s catalogs will be easily and simply streamed on demand. I can’t wait – see you on couch tour.

PH: Do you think new generations will continue to discover and listen to the Grateful Dead?

DS:  Of course. It’s tougher without Jerry around, but the tapers knew how important their work would be. We’ll all reap the benefits of their hard work for years to come. I’m only 21, yet I have plenty of peers that are unearthing the Dead and diving into recordings. Hopefully Listen will aid new fans in the daunting spiral that is Live Music.

PH: Awesome, thanks for your time and letting Hidden Track help announce the new site. I’m sure lots of people will find it really useful. Good luck with development of this and your other endeavors.

DS: My pleasure. If you want to keep up with the development of the site, please follow me on twitter: @phishvids. If you really like the site, you can follow me in real life, but only between the hours of 5 PM and 4 PM. Also, no Tuesdays.

***

We created a playlist on Listen from Hidden Track’s B-List of the Grateful Dead’s favorite bustouts. Notice the ability to annotate the songs. We’d like to encourage our readers to create their own playlists. Perhaps Top Ten Darkstars? Pig Pen’s favorite moments? Highlights from the Capital Theater? Best New Year’s moments? Use your creativity and leave a comment here or shoot me an email with your playlist. We’ll feature a couple creative playlists later in the week on Hidden Track. I hope someone creates a playlist with a couple of the choice songs from each on the the “Top 20 Essential Dead Shows” per David Fricke.

Happy listening!

Over the past four years I’ve spent the first or second week of January trying to explain the unexplainable in my dispatches from Jam Cruise. On this year’s Jam Cruise 11, our pal Jefferson Waful came aboard to film an episode of his Jeff Waful + 1 show for Relix.com about the magic of the boat.

We’ll get to see the full episode later the spring, for now here’s the trailer…

As you can see, Jefferson spoke with many of the musicians, staff members, cruisers and even me about the Jam Cruise experience. We can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Conspirator @ the Gramercy Theatre, April 8th

PhotosJeremy Gordon

Watching Conspirator at the Gramercy Theatre in New York City, I was reminded of one of the finest TractorBeam shows on the same stage in ‘07. With a tighter stage, fans were able to experience their favorite musicians stretching their ideas in a different direction in a more intimate venue, than a typical Disco Biscuits show. With their own take on Pink Floyd’s, Another Brick in the Wall and great lighting to accent the band’s performances, everyone went home happy. Although no one seemed happier than Chris Michetti’s bandmate (in RAQ) Todd Stoops.

Sitting in for the second night in a row, Stoops waved his arms and made a few crazy faces as he played it up next to Aron Magner this past Thursday night.

HT faves Tea Leaf Green are gearing up for the release of a long-in-the-making new album, In The Wake, due on May 14th. Today, the band gave us our first taste of In The Wake by debuting the LP’s lead single – Give Me One More Chance – on MSN. While TLG has never performed Give Me One More Chance live, it has been played by Trevor Garrod and his solo band. For the studio version of Give Me One More Chance, Tea Leaf Green is joined by vocalist Lesley Grant of London Street.

The Give Me One More Chance video finds the members of Tea Leaf Green and Grant walking around their home city of San Francisco. We dig the bouncy bassline, steel guitar licks, layers of what sounds like a Mellotron and catchy lyrics. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think…

Video: Night Beds – Dancing On My Own (Robyn)

The AV Club’s AV Undercover series never seems to get old. The latest song that gets the treatment comes from a woman whom I consider the single most entertaining pop star in the business, Robyn. You won’t get any of her trademark dance moves here, but Nashville’s Night Beds definitely stay rather true to the tune while putting their own countrified tinge on the song. There’s some nice use of the Moog Taurus by the guitar player too. Night Beds first full length, Country Sleep, came out on March 5th via Dead Oceans. Check out their cover of Robyn’s Dancing On My Own…

Phil Lesh Jams With Dark Star Orchestra @ Terrapin Crossroads

There was once a time when Phil Lesh and Dark Star Orchestra weren’t on good terms. It was said Lesh didn’t appreciate DSO’s concept and that DSO wasn’t thrilled that Phil recruited John Kadlecik for Furthur. Those bad vibes have apparently dissipated as Uncle Phil sat in with Dark Star Orchestra last night for the second time in six months.

DSO performed at Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads venue and were joined by the Grateful Dead / Furthur bassist for the majority of the second set. Phil emerged at the beginning of the second stanza, as DSO bassist Kevin Rosen sat out, for China > Rider and That’s It For The Other One sequences. While most of the show focused on material from the late ’60s, Dark Star offered an “original setlist” instead of performing a show from the Dead’s past.

Here’s the setlist from last night’s show…

Set One: Dancin’ In The Streets > Till The Morning Comes, High Time, Easy Wind > Not Fade Away > New Orleans > Not Fade Away > Death Don’t Have No Mercy > Viola Lee Blues

Set Two: China Cat Sunflower* > I Know You Rider*, Cryptical Envelopment > * The Other One > * Cryptical Envelopment*, Hard To Handle > Alligator > jam (mountain jam) > The Eleven > Going Down The Road

Encore: Brokedown Palace

* – w/ Phil Lesh

Dark Star Orchestra move on to a venue owned by a different member of the Grateful Dead this evening for a sold-out show at Bob Weir’s Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, Calif.
