One Year Later: We Miss Ween + Gener’s Rolling Stone

$
0
0

It’s hard to believe it’s been exactly one year since Rolling Stone published an article that effectively broke up Ween. Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman told the magazine that he’s “retiring Gene Ween.” When pressed about whether that meant the end for HT faves Ween, Freeman responded “Pretty much, yeah. It’s been a long time, 25 years. It was a good run.” Sadly, Freeman and Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo haven’t shared a stage since and a year later there’s no end in sight to the breakup.

As sad as we are about the loss of Ween, Melchiondo and Freeman haven’t exactly rode off into the sunset. Deaner is set to put out a Moistboyz album this summer and is working on a highly-anticipated reality show with Primus front man Les Claypool. Meanwhile, Gener is working on new material of his own, had fun with us regarding a sex change, has toured and participated in a number of special shows. The most recent of which was a Bob Dylan tribute at the Bearsville Theatre on Sunday, where Gener teamed up with Marco Benevento, Jim Weider, Dave Dreiwitz and others for a cover of Like A Rolling Stone. Pretty fitting he’s singing a song about how it feels to be alone…

Let’s hope at this time next year we’re writing about how Ween reformed (for at least an impromptu gig WITH Gener) during the past 12 months instead of another “We Miss Ween” post.

Bloggy Goodness: Pete Shapiro’s Rock And Roll Playhouse

Since returning to the music venue business with the opening of Brooklyn Bowl back in 2009, Pete Shapiro has continued to add to new rooms to his growing portfolio over the last few years. Shapiro’s latest venture is aimed at a slightly different audience, as he has announced the opening of The Rock And Roll Playhouse – a kid-friendly space at 280 Bond Street in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn.

The venue will feature “20 different programs for the different age groups including: Beatles for Babies, Little Rockers, Rockers, and Big Rockers; Reggae for Babies and Little Rockers; Rock and Roll Storytime for Little Rockers; a theatrical Rock and Roll Stories for Rockers; World Music for all age groups; Drawing Rock and Roll; and Introductory programs focused on Songwriting, Guitar, Percussion and Keyboards.” The Rock And Roll Playhouse, which is slated to open this winter, will include classes for adults, a full bar and food courtesy of the folks at Blue Ribbon Brassiere.

Finally, last year David Byrne and St. Vincent teamed up to release Love This Giant, a twelve-track collection that received a heap of critical praise. The duo, who mounted an extensive world-tour that featured a slew of musicians and dancers, will once again head out together for a lengthy world tour that kicks off with a gig at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, New Jersey on June 12. Prior to all that though, Mr. Byrne and Ms. Clark have announced the release of Brass Tactics – a new five-song EP that you can download for free. The EP features a previously unreleased tune that didn’t make the album, as well as two live tracks recorded last year and two remixes. Here’s the track list…

Part of his prize was getting to a backstage set from moe. that he shared with the rest of us via the Summer Camp YouTube channel.

We’ve assembled a playlist of the three kickass vids that Kyle has shared on the Summer Camp channel. Check out moe. performing Cissy Strut by The Meters, their own Kyle’s Song (a fitting choice for the counselor’s private set) and The Band’s The Weight backstage with Victor Wooten at Summer Camp…

Chicago’s Charter One Pavilion Renovations Delayed

$

0

We’ve had our eyes on the ongoing renovations at Charter One Pavilion on Northerly Island in Chicago ever since it was announced Phish would play three shows at the venue on July 19 – 21. Back in March the Chicago Plan Commission approved work on the venue that would raise capacity and rotate the stage. The first concert set to take place at the renovated Charter One Pavilion was a Dispatch show this coming Saturday.

Due to recent storms that have led to floods in The Windy City, there have been delays to the renovation of Charter One Pavilion leading promoters to move Saturday’s Dispatch concert to UIC Pavilion. Here’s the official announcement from Dispatch’s Facebook Page

Chicago…we’ve got good news and bad news.

Late last week, the Charter One Pavilion told us that their winter renovations wouldn’t be completed in time for this Saturday’s show. We were floored and upset because we were looking forward to spending an evening under the stars with over 7,000 of you. We spent all weekend trying to move the concert to another outdoor venue in the city like Millenium Park or Grant Park, but couldn’t get the permits.

This left us with two options:

1.) Postpone the show. Not only would this inconvenience everyone with long distance travel plans, Guster wouldn’t be able to join us for the new date.

2.) Move the concert indoors to the UIC Pavilion.

We debated the pros and cons for hours and decided that moving it indoors was the best option. With that said, Saturday’s concert in Chicago will now be happening at the UIC Pavilion.

If you’ve been to UIC and Charter One, you’re probably thinking, “Charter One is general admission, UIC has an open floor plus assigned seats and we all can’t fit on the floor.” You’re right, unfortunately the floor is going to be first come first serve, which means you’ll have to arrive early to get a floor wristband.

However, as a thank you to the early arrivers, we’re going to having a HUGE pre-concert tailgating party from 4:30-6PM. Brad, Chad, and Pete (along with some helpers) will be hanging out with everyone and cooking up mountains of dogs and burgers for the early arrivers. All of the food and drinks will be FREE. It’s gonna be the biggest Dispatch party Chicago’s ever seen.

The UIC Pavilion also has lower ticketing fees than the Charter One Pavilion so online purchasers will be receiving a $4 fee refund from Ticketmaster in the coming days.

Again, the show on Saturday in Chicago is STILL ON and the guys are gonna do everything possible to make it a night you won’t forget. They might even have a few surprises up their sleeves.

- Team Dispatch

DNAInfo Chicago has a full report on the postponement and has brought up some interesting points. A local businessowner warns that parking for Charter One events jumps to $49 for concerts, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re heading out there. Though, DNAInfo Chicago was unable to get the Parks Department to confirm that parking price. Also, music fans will be able to camp outside the boundaries of the venue until sunset, at which point they’ll be asked to leave. So you will be able to listen to the beginning of Charter One Pavilion concerts until about 8:30 or 9PM on show nights. Other than that, access to Northerly Island will be limited “to concert employees, audience members and boaters who need to access the harbor,” a Parks District Spokeswoman told DNAInfo Chicago.

There’s nearly two months until Phish takes the stage at the renovated venue, so we don’t think there’s any danger of the three shows being moved. That said, start saving for parking fees!

[via DNAInfo Chicago, Hat Tip - P. Swanton]

UPDATE: The article’s author, Lizzie Schiffman, has confirmed pricing for the venue via a Park District Rep. “Parking costs will range from $30 to $49 on show nights, Juaniza from the Park District said, and the Adler Planetarium lot will house the VIP parking area.” Bear in mind, if you’re one of the lucky ones to get there early enough to secure parking at the North Garage at Soldier Field, which isn’t on the island but is adjacent via a bridge or shuttle, you can park from free. Parking on Northerly Island will cost you.

Is Montclair’s Wellmont Theatre On Its Last Legs As A Rock Hall?

$

We stumbled across news that could turn out to be quite a bummer as it appears the future of rock shows at Montclair’s Wellmont Theatre is in doubt. The Montclair Times team realized that the venue promoter, The Bowery Presents, only has two concerts scheduled at the historic theater in downtown Montclair, New Jersey; with the second one – MGMT – set to take place on June 20.

When The Montclair Times reached out to The Bowery Presents, they received this statement:

“The Bowery Presents loves being part of the Montclair community. We have been embraced by our fans, fellow business people and local officials, and have always been good neighbors to the restaurants and stores by offering great shows and concert experiences at The Wellmont Theatre. While we can’t comment on litigation at this time, our current goal is to continue to run The Wellmont as a beloved entertainment venue.”

According to the post there’s a legal dispute between The Bowery Presents and venue owner Rosen Group Inc. Apparently there are issues that will involve “some substantial money spent on finishing the issues in the building” as per Montclair Township Attorney Ira Karasick. While there aren’t any public safety issues, the problem could lead to the end of the relationship between the venue’s owner and promoter. The director of Montclair Center Business Improvement District, Luther Flurry, told the Montclair Times that he predicts the Wellmont “will continue on with or without The Bowery Presents.” That would be easier said than done in our opinion. We’ll keep you posted on any further news about the future of the Wellmont Theatre, but we have our fingers crossed a resolution will be found.

Video: Jake Bugg – Lightning Bolt

$

At just 19-years-old, Jake Bugg is kind of a big deal in his native country of England. The young and talented singer-songwriter was chosen to by the BBC to appear on Glastonbury’s “Introducing” stage when he was just 17, which earned him a recording contract with Mercury Records. Last year Bugg, who puts a modern spin on some classic influences – like The Beatles, Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers, as well as nodding to more contemporary Brit-pop acts like Oasis, topped the U.K. charts with his highly recommended 14-track self-titled debut.

Bugg, whose album was released in the U.S. earlier this spring, is staring to gain some momentum on this side of the pond thanks in part to his wise-beyond-his-years sound and some notable accolades from the likes of Rolling Stone and the New York Times. It’s the record’s lead single, Lightning Bolt, which has helped to break Bugg in recent weeks. The tune combines the lyrical vigor of early 1960′s Bob Dylan with 1950′s rockabilly and skiffle sounds. Let’s check out the music video…

Jake Bugg will kick off the North American leg of his lengthy world tour on September 13, with a gig at Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club.

Over the years moe. has opened for the Dave Matthews Band a number of times and that trend continued this week when the jam stalwarts opened for DMB in Toronto on Tuesday and in Scranton on Wednesday. Many acts use their opening sets to play their most accessible material and don’t stray “out of the box.” Well moe. is no ordinary band.

In Toronto, moe. welcomed old friend Jeff Coffin of DMB to sit in on Happy Hour Hero. Coffin crushes his solo and thanks to one of the best audience recordings I’ve ever heard, courtesy of Lenny Stubbe, we can hear the fantastic version of Happy Hour Hero…

Then, in Scranton, as noted by Jambands.com, moe. ended their set by performing the theme song to the just-completed long-running sitcom The Office. The Office was set in Scranton and you can tell by the reaction of the crowd, that they approved…

Full Show Friday: The Police – Live At The Tokyo Dome

$

When we started Hidden Track in 2006 the possibility of The Police reuniting was about equal to that of pigs flying. Sting said it would never happen and then all of the sudden it did. The man born Gordon Sumner woke up one morning and realized that if he didn’t reunite The Police at that moment in time, it may never happen. So he made a few calls and all of the sudden we had a full-blown Police reunion on our hands. Sting promised it would be a one-and-done venture and after over a year of shows between ’07 and ’08, he has kept his word as there’s not even been talk of the trio reuniting since.

But we’ll always have that Reunion Tour. While The Police took heat from many for not taking many chances setlist-wise and including no new material, I absolutely loved the three shows I saw. Stewart, Sting-O and Andy still had their chops (though it took Andy a while to get back to speed), and as the shows went on they started adding more improv into the sets. For today’s Full Show Friday, we’ve got pro-shot video of The Police’s entire February 13th, 2008 performance at the Tokyo Dome…

Sharon Jones Cancer Battle Leads To Tour & Album Postponement

$

There’s sad news out of Brooklyn this morning as Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have canceled the release of their new album and touring plans for the remainder of 2013. Jones has been diagnosed with stage-one bile duct cancer. The good news is that it was caught early and Sharon is expected to make a full recovery. However, the surgery she will endure will  require a long period of convalescence.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings were expected to release Give The People What They Want on August 6. Once Jones gets back on her feet, the band will resume touring and put out the LP.

Here’s the official statement from Jones:

“Over the last few weeks I haven’t felt good and I didn’t know what was going on. We sadly had to cancel shows while I went through a series of tests and short hospital stays. We just found out that I have a stage-one tumor on my bile duct. Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it’s operable and curable!

I will be having surgery very soon and will have to rest and recover. I’ll be staying in touch and keeping my fans and friends updated on my progress. I’m looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want!”

-Sharon Jones

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sharon.
