In Memoriam: Graphic Artist Storm Thorgerson (1944-2013)

We’ve got sad news to pass along this afternoon as graphic artist Storm Thorgerson has passed away. The news was confirmed by English journalist and songwriter Polly Samson, who’s also David Gilmour’s wife. Thorgerson designed countless album covers including Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Phish’s Slip Stitch and Pass, Umphrey’s McGee’s Safety In Numbers and The Mars Volta’s Frances The Mute.

Thorgerson is best known for his work with Pink Floyd as he not only designed the iconic cover of Dark Side, but also produced the cover art for many other of the band’s LPs including Animals, Wish You Were Here and Atom Heart Mother.

David Gilmour has shared the following thoughts about Storm:

We first met in our early teens. We would gather at Sheep’s Green, a spot by the river in Cambridge and Storm would always be there holding forth, making the most noise, bursting with ideas and enthusiasm. Nothing has ever really changed.

He has been a constant force in my life, both at work and in private, a shoulder to cry on and a great friend.

The artworks that he created for Pink Floyd from 1968 to the present day have been an inseparable part of our work.

I will miss him.

David Gilmour

The Pink Floyd website adds…

We are saddened by the news that long-time Pink Floyd graphic genius, friend and collaborator, Storm Thorgerson, has died. Our thoughts are with his family and many friends.

Here’s just a handful of the memorable covers Storm produced…

Umphrey’s McGee – Safety In Numbers (2006)

Ellis, Beggs & Howard – Homelands (1988)

Led Zeppelin – Presence (1976)

Phish – Slip Stitch and Pass (1997)

Richard Wright – Broken China (1996)

The Cranberries – Bury the Hatchet (1999)

The next archival release on CD from Phish looks to be a doozy as a listing for a compilation of two shows the quartet played at Ventura County Fairgrounds in 1997 and 1998 has surfaced on the always reliable Alternative Distribution Alliance website. Phish: Ventura is due on June 18th.

The two shows took place on July 30th, 1997 and July 20th, 1998 respectively and each have a slew of highlights. This audio-only release will provide official recordings for two shows of which excellent audience recordings have never surfaced due to in part to the wind at the venue. According to the tracklisting on the ADA site, soundchecks from both performances will be included in this set.

Here’s a look at the setlists for the two shows…

Notes: Poor Heart featured several false endings, including a Free Bird-style ending. Makisupa included a long, atypical jam. Sea and Sand (first since NYE 1995, or 166 shows) was an appropriate choice, given the venue’s location near the beach. Sexual Healing made its Phish debut at this show with Fishman reading the lyrics off the back of a show poster. As delay loops built to end Halley’s Comet, the band left the stage one by one.

Earlier this month we shared the news that Mavis Staples will be releasing a new album called One True Vine, produced by Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy, that’s due on June 25. When the track list was revealed, we were excited to see a cover of Funkadelic’s Can You Get To That on there.

Can You Get To That is the second track on Funkadelic’s landmark 1971 album Maggot Brain. This wasn’t your typical Funkadelic joint as it was acoustic-based has a gospel feel. Staples’s iconic voice is almost hidden in her version of the tune, but comes out at the most opportune times. Check it out…

Robbie Robertson Putting Together Deluxe Edition of The Band’s Rock of Ages – Live at the Academy of Music

During the final week of 1971 The Band played a residency at New York City’s Academy of Music that was immortalized by the 1972 live album Rock of Ages. For the run, The Band’s guitarist/songwriter Robbie Robertson commissioned New Orleans fixture Allen Toussaint to put together horn charts for the group’s best tunes. The Band was joined by a five-piece horn section for the run that played the magnificent parts Toussaint put together.

Robbie Robertson has just announced that he’s mixing and putting together a “deluxe edition” of Rock of Ages in a post on his Facebook page

At Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Concert in NYC I did the song ‘I Shall Be Released’ which The Band recorded on our first album. I told the audience it was in remembrance of some dear old friends. Most people knew I was referring to Levon (who passed away one year ago today), Rick and Richard.

We are mixing and putting together a deluxe edition of The Band’s album Rock Of Ages — Live At The Academy Of Music. Hearing my Bandmates perform at the top of their game is so moving and powerful.

I miss those days and miss them so much.

Thank God, Garth is still with us and making beautiful music. -Robbie

There’s already been an expanded edition of Rock of Ages that was released in 2001, yet we’re sure there’s plenty of material from the Academy of Music run that’s never seen the light of day. Robertson only shared the details above, so there’s no word of a release date but we’ll keep you posted.

We’re also hoping there’s video involved. Watch Don’t Do It from the AOM residency…

HT Interview: Bobby Long Discusses Wishbone

$
0
0

It’s hard to believe just how far Bobby Long has come in the past four years. When we first started covering him back in 2009, we knew he had a powerful voice and a small collection of well-crafted songs, but his biggest claim to fame was the legion of fans that discovered him through his musical contribution to the first Twilight film. While the placement certainly did wonders for his career, we also wondered if it would serve as a musical typecast – if he’d be able to break away from Twilight and strike a chord with a broader audience.

Sure enough, in that short time he’s managed to sign to ATO – the label founded by Dave Matthews and Coran Capshaw that hosts the likes of My Morning Jacket, Alabama Shakes, Primus and Drive By Truckers; complete two full albums and an EP and evolve as a musician. His vocal qualities carry the material, but what a careful listener will notice most over this short time period is the continual reinvention of  the music. What began as mostly singer-songwriter acoustic material has morphed into rock ‘n’ roll replete with distinctive electric guitar licks. Each album in itself is entertaining, but the changes from one to the next are enduring. Here, Long discusses his latest album entitled Wishbone.

Hidden Track: Let’s start out with the recording process. Perhaps you could compare how things played out with this process on Wishbone with how things worked on a Winter Tale, or even before that on your pure solo material.

Bobby Long: Well, this time around we actually had time – more than A Winter Tale at least. I did an EP last year with a backing singer, and we recorded that in about two hours. I like recording fast, but it felt like a nice option to have time on this record where the guys in the band came in for five days and tracked, and then we had an extra week and half afterwards for me to do my work on certain arrangements and stuff like that.

So, it was nice having time. It wasn’t so much time where we felt we were just doing stuff for the sake of it. For the first time ever, I was in the studio where we weren’t rushing to do a certain number of songs in a day.

HT: One thing I’ve noticed having followed your music for a while is the evolution of your guitar playing. It’s come through a lot of periods and styles and really improved. How did you get so good in developing electric guitar licks from your original style of rhythmic, finger picking singer-songwriter tunes?

BL:  When I first started playing guitar, I always really enjoyed playing electric. I was a really big Jimi Hendrix fan as well as Tony Iommi and people like that. So, I was more impressed with the electric when I first started when I about 16, but when I started writing songs on my own and playing acoustic, you have to be more in the pocket.

So, when I first started writing songs for this album, I got more confident that I actually could play guitar quite well – or reasonably well, not great – but I was confident being more expressive. I was also playing electric on everything because we weren’t doing it live and we were doing everything kind of “rock” in a live room tracking straight to tape.

For me it was a confidence thing, because I’ve always had it in me to push myself more, so I got into the finger picking and strumming, which I love and I’m really proud of some of the things I’ve done, but I kind of forced myself to push it and remember that I’m not just that style of guitar player. It felt like really revisiting myself as a 17-year-old, plugging in with a fuzz pedal and going for it a bit more.

HT: On a similar note, this album is probably the most “band” prominent thus far. How do you like the approach of working with a band as opposed to the more solo effort?

BL: It was actually really nice, because it’s great playing with people, but I could also never really be in a band. It’s not the control. I just like being on my own, writing on my own, being up there on my own, and playing on my own. But I’ve always enjoyed collaborating with people. When we did the first record, A Winter Tale, I enjoyed working with Liam Watson too.

But this was really refreshing. We rehearsed in New York a few times just me and the guys who played and they had some really good ideas, hearing a different opinion and some different ways forward with the songs.

It’s a massive difference at the same time when it’s just you and a producer, because then you really have to work and you can’t rely on other people. It’s different though, where if one person’s not feeling the take, it can really bring the whole team down. I really enjoyed it though.

HT: In terms in lyrical material, I was curious if there were one or two songs that you really feel strongly about on the album?

BL: Yeah, on this album, lyrically are some of the same topics that I’ve sung about before like war and death and stuff like that [laughs], but this time I think it was a bit more tasteful on this record and more laid back than ever before. I’m trying to think of some of my favorite lyrics. I found myself on Yesterday Yesterday doing a bit of a commentary on society, which I’ve never done before. I always kind of hated people who did that [laughs], since it’s quite a Bono thing to do, but I quite like how that came out.

There’s a song called Not Tonight, Not Today where I talk about an event, this parade, from when I was a kid. I’ve never done that either, so the lyrics are quite painful and a bit sinful, so I quite like that. It’s a bit different, and I think different is good.

HT: How has the reception to the poetry book been?

BL: That was really good. It can be a bit weird when you put something out like that, trying to get somebody to buy a book of your feelings and thoughts [laughs] in a free form. But it was really good and people are still buying it. I’m really glad I did it.

Almost because of the intensity of that, when I wrote the songs on Wishbone, I was more free medium. I was able to relax into it a bit more. It was great as a project in itself, but it also worked really well for the album as well, because I felt really relaxed lyrically and it helped me push myself.

HT: I know in the past you’ve talked about your folk background, but I just realized that you actually did a whole thesis on it, so I was curious to know what that entailed and what the actual project was about?

BL: I wrote about the connection between folk music and the civil rights movement through people like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan being the voice of dissent in the civil rights movement. It was also talking about how this massive incredible social event kind of brought Martin Luther Kind to Washington, and folk music became the vessel where folk music became the voice of the movement and the protesting. Even with Dylan’s singing, he probably didn’t really want to be thought of as a protest singer, but he was there and his songs seemed to display what everyone else was thinking. It was talking about that really; just trying to capture this rare thing where a form of music brings people together so much.

HT: Have you made a point to play at venues that still exist from that period?

BL: Yeah, I have actually. I love to do that. The places in Greenwich Village and Boston where a lot of the folk singers played, that’s a really important time, so I try to play there.

HT: One other question for you. We were talking about New York a little bit. What have become your favorite places to hang out since you’ve lived here in terms of restaurants or bars or venues?

BL: Oh wow. I just had my favorite pub close down. I knew the owners and I didn’t pay for a drink in there for three years. It was called Local 269. It was kind of a good thing, so now I don’t come in at 3 am four nights a week [laughs]. I go to Iggy’s quite a lot on 73rd street too.

My thing in New York though is just walking around. Three are restaurants and bars I like, but I really love just walking around. I have a dog, so we walk everywhere. We love Central Park.

Audio: MGMT – Alien Days

Most bands put out vinyl for today’s Record Store Day, but HT faves MGMT aren’t most bands. They psych-rockers decided to put out a cassette single featuring the first single, Alien Days, from their forthcoming third studio album. While little is known about MGMT’s third album, the band did expect that it will come out in June when discussing the LP with Rolling Stone.

Alien Days has an electronic extraterrestrial feel with lyrics that MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden says is “about that feeling when a parasitic alien is in your head, controlling things.” That’s totally the first thought we had when listening to the tune, which the band shared on SoundCloud. Take a listen…

MGMT hits the road later this week for a three-week Spring Tour.

Video: Dean Ween Shares New Moistboyz Single – Paperboy

Mickey Melchiondo isn’t just Dean Ween from Ween, he’s also Mickey Moist from Moistboyz. Deaner founded the band in the ’90s with vocalist Guy Heller, aka Dickie Moist, and Moistboyz have since released four studio albums filled with lyrics that would make the politically correct among us cringe at extremely random intervals. The group has a new album in the works, Moistboyz V Medusa, which is due this summer and today shared the album’s first single – Paperboy – on vinyl for Record Store Day.

This marks Melchiondo’s first official release of new music since Ween broke up a year ago. The video for Paperboy utilizes a whacked-out version of the 1984 video game of the same name and was directed by Zak Pine. You can always count on Moistboyz to shock and awe and there’s plenty of stuff in the video that’s controversial such as the shooting of dogs, a fat policeman eating a donut, an image of a Jewish man holding pennies and an ad for “Cohen Law” with the URL yourjewishlawyer.con.

We think the song itself rocks, see if you agree…

We’re not sure what day Bustle will be at the ‘Roo, but we do know it won’t be on the 14th as the quartet is set to play Chicago’s Bottom Lounge for an official Taste of Randolph Street after party.

This summer HT faves Wilco, My Morning Jacket and Bob Dylan will headline a North American tour dubbed “AmericanaramA.” All three bands have revealed their participation in the tour at this point with full details expected on Monday at noon.

As part of Wilco’s AmericanaramA announcement, they hint that the tour will visit Toyota Park near Chicago. Wilco also let it slip that Richard Thompson and his Electric Trio will be part of the traveling festival, while Bob Dylan’s announcement also names Ryan Bingham as a participant.

Once details are announced on Monday, tickets will go on sale shortly thereafter. BobDylan.com points to a pre-sale starting on Wednesday, April 24th. We’re excited to see what this is all about and are expecting Wilco and My Morning Jacket to collaborate, but Bob Dylan isn’t exactly an artist known for welcoming other acts to his stage. Stay tuned for more details on AmericanaramA.
