Cover Alert: John Mayer & Keith Urban – Don’t Let Me Down

Last night was the first night of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival which was held at Madison Square Garden in NYC. The evening started with an acoustic set from EC and continued through the Allman Brothers Band’s six-song closing set. We’ll have more on Friday’s festivities soon, but we wanted to share an impressive covered delivered by John Mayer and Keith Urban of Don’t Let Me Down.

Urban and Mayer are mainstream stars who can still shred melodically and energetically on guitar. This version of Don’t Let Me Down, a song The Beatles recorded during the Let It Be sessions that wound up as the b-side on the Get Back single, offered plenty of opportunity for Keith and John to show off their skills. Thanks to LazyLightning55, we can watch it mere hours after the killer cover happened…

Say It Ain’t So: Daft Punk Has No Plans To Tour

While many are chomping at the bit to hear the new Daft Punk album, we were more excited to see the band live. The French duo’s Alive 2007 Tour was the stuff of legend thanks to the relentless sonic assault and mind-blowing pyramid staging they brought to each show. Unfortunately it looks like we’ll have to wait to see Daft Punk in concert as the pair told Rolling Stone that they don’t have any plans to tour behind the soon-to-be-released Random Access Memories.

Here’s what DP’s Thomas Bangalter had to say about touring to RS’s Jonah Weiner…

“we have no current plans” to tour the new record. “We want to focus everything on the act and excitement of listening to the album. We don’t see a tour as an accessory to an album.” When they do finally hit the road, he added, it will be with a career-encompassing set list, not one overly focused on the new material.

[via Rolling Stone]

Thankfully Bangalter has left the door open for a tour, it just sounds like it won’t be anytime soon. Now, that doesn’t mean the pair won’t make appearances to promote the album and we bet there will be plenty of those in the near future. But as with everything in the world of Daft Punk, any potential appearances are shrouded in secrecy and for every one performance they actually make, we bet we’ll see dozens of blog posts about ones that don’t wind up happening.

Last night at Coachella, festivalgoers were shocked to find a trailer for Random Access Memories playing on the big screens around the Polo Grounds. In the clip we get to hear more of Daft Punk’s new single, Get Lucky, and are treated to a list of collaborators that includes The Strokes lead singer Julian Casablancas, Pharrell Williams and Panda Bear of Animal Collective. Take a look…

Every three years since 2004 Eric Clapton has called upon his famous guitarist friends and those young axeslingers he admires for a benefit called the Crossroads Guitar Festival to raise funds for Clapton’s Crossroads Centre drug treatment center in Antigua. Following the 2004 edition in Dallas and 2007 and 2010 editions near Chicago, this year’s Crossroads Fest takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Last night was the first of the event’s two nights at the “World’s Greatest Arena.”

Clapton took the stage as the evening’s first act for a five-song acoustic set and returned at points in the night to sit in with many of the performers on the bill. Booker T was up next and was joined by Steve Cropper, Blake Mills, Matt “Guitar” Murphy and Keb Mo for a set of MGs classics. A summit of guitar gods followed, which saw Clapton team up with B.B. King, Robert Cray and Jimmie Vaughan. Sonny Landreth delivered a song while the stage was set for Doyle Bramhall II, who welcomed Citizen Cope and Gary Clark Jr. during his five-song performance. From there, Philip Sayce, Earl Klugh and Al Turner and Kurt Rosenwinkel each took turns leading the proceedings with Clapton joining Rosenwinkel for If I Should Lose You and Way Down That Lonesome Road. Gary Clark Jr. returned for a quick solo interlude which was followed a John Mayer set. Country star Keith Urban helped out Mayer and his band for a cover of Don’t Let Me Down By The Beatles. For Buddy Guy’s set the Chicago legend was joined by Robert Randolph and his protege – Quinn Sullivan. The evening’s MC Dan Aykroyd paired up with Keb Mo for a few tunes before he introduced the Allman Brothers Band to close out the show. The Allmans finished off the evening with a five-song set that included sit-ins from David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, Taj Mahal and Clapton himself for Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?

Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, Tony, Jason and Grahame’s Second Ramble With Phil Lesh @ Terrapin Crossroads

After Thursday’s show turned our heads, we were excited to see what “Uncle” Phil Lesh, Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, Tony Leone, Grahame Lesh and Jason Crosby had in store for their second of three Spring Rambles at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, Calif. last night. Just like Thursday’s opening show, Friday saw the newly-formed ensemble mix blues classics, NMAS tunes and a bunch of songs from the Grateful Dead’s touring repertoire. Then, for good measure, the band threw in a pair of Neil Young gems in Cortez The Killer and Down By The River for good measure.

Once again, the sextet infused plenty of improvisation throughout each set. Band members took turns handling vocals with Luther stepping to mic on Rollin’ and Tumblin’, How I Wish My Train Would Come and Mean Old Wind Died Down, while Anders fronted the group for Friend of the Devil, Big Boss Man, Down By The River, Cortez The Killer and Fire On The Mountain. During his usual donor rap, Phil remarked that the evening marked the 52nd anniversary of the first manned spaceflight.

Here’s the setlist from last night’s Spring Ramble @ Terrapin Crossroads…

Phil Lesh – bass, vocals (PL)
Luther Dickinson – guitar, vocals (LD)
Anders Osborne – guitars, vocals (AO)
Grahame Lesh – acoustic & electric guitars, vocals (GL)
Jason Crosby – keyboards, vocals (JC)
Tony Leone – drums, vocals (TL)

Set One: Deal (TL) > Jam > Rollin’ and Tumblin’ (w/Drinkin’ Muddy Water verse) (LD) > Friend of the Devil (AO) > How I Wish My Train Would Come (LD), Brown Eyed Women (GL, PL), Big Boss Man (AO), Bertha (GL)

Set Two: Mozambique instrumental > (w/Somewhere Over the Rainbow jam) > Down By The River (AO) > Mean Old Wind Died Down (LD) > Franklin’s Tower (PL), Scarlet Begonias (GL) > Jam > Cortez The Killer (AO) > New Speedway Boogie (GL)

Encore: Donor rap (Phil: 52nd anniversary of first manned space flight), Fire on the Mountain (AO)

What We Know: Trey Anastasio’s Blue Ash & Other Suburbs

$
0
0

Record Store Day 2013 takes place on April 20th, exactly one week from today. Among the exclusive Record Store Day releases you’ll be able to find, if you’re lucky (there’s only 1,200 copies up for sale), at your local independent record store will be a 7″ from Phish front man Trey Anastasio dubbed “Blue Ash And Other Suburbs.” Ever since we helped break the news on this release, there’s been little known about the four songs included within. Let’s run down what we know.

Blue Ash And Other Suburbs, a limited edition picture disc vinyl, contains outtakes from the Traveler sessions in Fall, 2011. All in all there are four songs on Blue Ash And Other Suburbs, each of which were co-produced by Anastasio and Peter Katis. Only one of the tunes has been played by the Trey Anastasio Band and that’s Gone which was also performed by Phish and included on the quartet’s Party Time LP. Here’s the lyrics for Gone as well as a video from a live performance…

Gone (Anastasio)

Running from yourself
Come back from the dead
All those sleepless nights, all that pain
I’m sorry, You’re gone
But you’re gone

When hope is nearly lost
You’ll finally do what’s right
Stop bleeding from your head anymore
The devil has you down
So turn around
And rise into the light

Running from yourself
Spinning got you here
Come back from the dead
There’s no sun left in your eyes
All Those sleepless nights all that pain
You looked right through me
I’m sorry, You’re gone
But you’re gone

When hope is nearly lost
Pray with all your strength
You’ll finally do what’s right
Spoke with your eyes closed
Stop bleeding from your head anymore
I saw you dreaming like a child
The devil has you down
Cross the river with your friends
So turn around, and rise into the light

The title track, Blue Ash And Other Suburbs, was written by Trey and from the looks of the song’s listing on Trey.com, it’s an instrumental. Blue Ash is a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Tree was written by UVM alum and Traveler producer Peter Katis along with Burlington resident James Kochalka. James is not only a musician, but he’s also a well-respected comic book artist.

Here’s the lyrics for Tree…

Tree (Katis/Kochalka)

Trees
Shake your leaves
Wave your branches in the air
Tree
Shake your leaves
Wave ‘em like you just don’t care

Cause when the wind blows
We like to party down
Case when the wind blows
Every tree in town
Cause when the wind blows
We like to party down

Me
And all the trees
Me
And the trees
Feel the breeze
Feel the wind
That’s when the party’s gonna begin

Me
And the trees
Feel the wind
Feel the breeze
I just wanna party
like a mighty
Tree

And then there’s Can You See It. Many fans have speculated that the song is related to Traveler’s first single, Scabbard, which features a chorus of “It’s there, can you see it?” The lyrics on Trey.com don’t dispel that theory, although there’s not a comma and question mark in the repeated line “It’s There Can You See It” for the Blue Ash And Other Suburbs track. Here’s the lyrics from Trey.com

Can You See It (Anastasio)

It’s There Can You See It
It’s There Can You See It
It’s There Can You See It

It’s There Can You See It
It’s There Can You See It
It’s There Can You See It

We can’t wait to hear what these tracks are all about as well as Page McConnell’s new LP.

R. Kelly Teams With Phoenix For Ignition (Remix) / 1901 Mashup

All eyes were on Phoenix last night for their first-ever headlining set at Coachella. Would Daft Punk sit-in with the band as had been heavily rumored and as had happened at MSG in 2010? While that didn’t happen, the French rockers did have a surprise in store for the Indio crowd.

Rapper R. Kelly emerged during Phoenix’s encore for a mashup of Kelly’s 2003 hit Ignition (Remix) and the French act’s 2009 blockbuster 1901. This odd couple pairing actually worked pretty well with Phoenix throwing in a bit of Chloroform from the soon-to-be-released Entertainment and R. Kelly responding in kind with I’m A Flirt. HT faves Widespread Panic concluded a two-night stand at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago last night, where they used part of their encore to pay tribute to Levon Helm and The Band. Panic has been covering Ophelia and The Shape I’m In since 1987 and 1995 respectively. JB and Co. paired the tunes up at an October 30th, 2009 performance in Austin, Texas along with another The Band cover they do – Chest Fever. Since 2011, with the exception of one show, Panic continues to link Ophelia and The Shape I’m In when they play the songs as they did last night in The Windy City.

Busy Day @ Terrapin Crossroads: Stu Allen & Rob Barraco Brunch > Anders Osborne, Phil Lesh, Luther Dickinson Ramble

$

It’s hard to believe that Terrapin Crossroads is just a smidge over one year old. The Phil Lesh-owned venue has provided so many magical collaborations that previously only existed in our dreams. Anders Osborne and Luther Dickinson playing THREE shows with a band Phil put together? What a fantastic idea that turned out to be as good as expected when it actually took place. Last night was the finale of the three-night stand of Spring Rambles that saw Phil Lesh, Anders Osborne and Luther Dickinson team up with Grahame Lesh, Tony Leone and Jason Crosby at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, Calif. However, that wasn’t the only show at the venue on Saturday leading to Lesh to call it “one of most energetic weekends of music here yet for me” when the music finally stopped just after midnight.

Early in the day guitarist Stu Allen was the featured performer at Terrapin Crossroads during brunch. Allen treated brunchers to covers from the likes of The Beatles, Steely Dan and Bruce Cockburn as well as some Grateful Dead staples. Drummer Pete Lavezzoli joined Stu at one point as did keyboardist Rob Barraco who was in town with Dark Star Orchestra.

Watch Stu and Rob’s stupendous cover of Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan…

When the clock struck eight, Phil Lesh took the stage with Luther Dickinson, Anders Osborne, Grahame Lesh, Tony Leone and Jason Crosby for the first of two sets that brought the Spring Rambles to a close. The ensemble stuck to tunes from the Grateful Dead live repertoire in the first set with the exception of Dickinson’s Ship and a cover of And It Stoned Me. Anders handled vocals on the Van Morrison cover. Phil and the group kicked off the second set with a jam and rambled through Dead catalog choices connected by lots of improvisation, along with a version of Bo Diddley’s Who Do You Love? sung by Osborne. For the second set finale the band lit into Turn On Your Lovelight and added the refrain to Sly Stone’s I Want To Take Your Higher, which the crowd sung along with. The night – and the run – came to a close with a Mason’s Children encore.

Setlist…

Phil Lesh (PL) – bass, vocals
Luther Dickinson (LD) – guitars, keyboards, vocals
Anders Osborne (AO) – guitar, vocals
Grahame Lesh (GL) – acoustic & electric guitars, vocals

Reid Genauer brought Assembly of Dust to New York this weekend for gigs in New York City on Friday night and in Syracuse on Saturday. Regular AoD keyboardist Jason Crosby was across the continent playing Spring Rambles at Terrapin Crossroads with Phil Lesh, so Genauer and his band called upon Rob Marscher (Addison Groove Project / Matisyahu) to fill Crosby’s role this weekend. On Friday, AoD brought out guitarist Scott Metzger for a scorching rendition of Second Song.

Metzger emerged towards the end of the first set and not only handled his solos impressively, but he also duels with Assembly of Dust guitarist Adam Terrell near the finish of Second Song. Check it out…

Phil Lesh Makes One More Terrapin Crossroads Appearance Before Heading To New York For Furthur Tour

When three nights of music at Terrapin Crossroads came to a close late on Saturday, Phil Lesh told the crowd it was “one of most energetic weekends of music here yet for me” during his donor rap. Apparently Lesh wasn’t ready for it to be over as he stopped by his venue for Sunday Brunch before heading to New York for tonight’s start of Furthur’s nine-show run at The Capitol Theatre.

Phil joined his sons Grahame and Brian as well as guitarist Ross James during the Post-Ramble Acoustic Brunch to sing on a cover of Sigh No More by Mumford & Sons and to add vocals to Ramble On Rose.

Here’s videos of both…

Video: Eric Clapton and Robbie Robertson – I Shall Be Released

We weren’t planning on posting anything for a while as we’re still in shock over the tragic events that took place in Boston this afternoon. That said, music heals and songs like I Shall Be Released have gotten us through terrible times. So we wanted to share a performance from Saturday night.

On Saturday night Robbie Robertson made a rare appearance on stage as part of Eric Clapton’s final set of the Crossroads Guitar Festival at Madison Square Garden. As rare as performances by Robbie Robertson are, it’s even more unusual to hear him play a song by The Band. I Shall Be Released was written by Bob Dylan, but was used by The Band as a track on the group’s debut album – Music From Big Pink. After dedicating the song to some dear old friends, Robbie handled vocals on I Shall Be Released as he performed with Eric Clapton and his band at MSG on Saturday.

We urge our readers to donate money to the American Red Cross.

We’ve been following the career of Lissie since all the way back to December of 2009, right around the time that the singer-songwriter released her five-song EP of soulful, sun-baked folk-rock called Why You Runnin’. Since then Ms. Maurus has dropped her full-length debut, an EP of radically rearranged covers ranging from Metallica to Kid Cudi to Lady Gaga, toured the world and played just about every major music festival around. Last week Lissie gave a preview of her yet-to-be-named sophomore album, which is rumored to be hitting stores this spring, by releasing the music video for the record’s lead single Shameless, and has announced a world tour, her first in roughly two years. The 18-date run kicks off with a high profile appearance at the Hangout Music Festival on May 17.

If you’re not into a night with Ms. Maurus, then maybe you’ll be interested in hitting one of these recently announced tours…
