Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Treetop Flyers – Things Will Change

0
0

Over the last few years, the West London music scene has gathered at the Notting Hill Arts Club for a monthly night of music dubbed Communion that has churned out an impressive number of critically acclaimed acts – notably HT faves Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling and Michael Kiwanuka. With its pedigree firmly established the latest in the line of folkie British acts to emerge from that scene which deserves your attention is recent Partisan Records signees Treetop Flyers.

The Treetop Flyers, who won the Glastonbury Festival Emerging Talent Competition in 2011 and are ostensibly named for a Stephen Stills tune, will release their full-length debut The Mountain Moves on June 25. Produced by Noah Georgeson (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Bert Jansch) the record features the band’s throwback brand of soulful, harmony-laden folk-rock  that nods to the likes of CSN, The Band and Little Feat. Let’s check out this live acoustic version of the album’s lead single Things Will Change, which you can download for free via their Soundcloud page.

Two major summer music festivals have announced lineup additions today. HT faves Yonder Mountain String Band, Lettuce and Toubab Krewe are among the additions to the All Good Music Festival lineup. Meanwhile, Grizzly Bear and Wolfgang Gartner have been added to the Hangout Music Fest. All Good takes place at Ohio’s Legend Valley July 18 – 21, while Hangout Music Fest is set for the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama on May 17th – 19th.

Here’s six more stories of note as we start the week…

Finally, a special one-time-only concert is taking place in New York City on Wednesday night at The Cutting Room featuring members of The Radiators, Lettuce, Johnny Sketch & The Dirty Notes and more. A group dubbed “Fishhead Stew” brings together Dave Malone (The Radiators), Camile Baudoin (The Radiators), Adam Deitch (Lettuce/Break Science), Dave Pomerlau (Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes), and Mark Rechler (OUTHOUSE, Icons of Funk, Circus Mind) for what looks to be a killer night of music. Tickets for the debut (and possibly only) performance from Fishhead Stew are available here.

Widespread Panic Porch Songs XV Smells Like Mississippi

0
0

We couldn’t be happier with the pace at which Widespread Panic has been putting out their Porch Songs live archival releases. These “warts and all” recordings might not be as crystal-clear as the multi-track archival releases, but offer a great document of the band during the Mikey Houser days. The latest Porch Songs release, number 15, features the series first foray into the year 1995, a September 22nd performance from Tad Smith Coliseum in Oxford, Mississippi.

Porch Songs XV is available in MP3, FLAC, CD and ALAC formats via LiveWidespreadPanic.com.

Here’s Widespread Panic archivist Horace Moore’s writeup on the new release…

For the 15th volume of Porch Songs, we head to the deep South and pay an overdue visit to Mississippi…and to 1995. In the early days around these parts, Widespread Panic was always dirty and the crowd was always rowdy. Tad Smith holds about 9,000, but most of the places they used to play in Oxford were waaaay smaller…even setting up in The Grove back in 1990. The band routinely made a stop in Oxford from 89-92 and then played there for the last time this night in 1995; a year that seemed to help musically bridge the band from its earlier years to 1996 and beyond…but of course it did.

As the show begins, we quickly find out just how we want to be…given that we are definitely where we want to be…with a opening meltdown right into “Proving Ground.” ”Blackout” quickly finds its way into the mix with another lead in meltdown…and then yet another as they head back into “Proving Ground.” ”Wondering” settles everyone back in just before JB announces that this was their first ever rap show…as “Rebirtha” takes the field and all of us off again…this time to open the gate for the rest of this fantastic show. Appropriately, “Papa Legba” takes center stage mid set and it is on indeed. From there, “Stop-Go” gets good and out there before getting even dirtier with “Dear Mr. Fantasy”. “Radio Child” builds on all that energy and leads into a blistering “Conrad” to close out a nice welcoming and get us ready for what was to come. By then, it was pretty evident the band was where they wanted to be too.

The second set opener, “Send Your Mind,” quickly brought us all back around…especially with the “Love Tractor” that followed. ”Aunt Avis” began to set a more spacey mood all the way into “Driving Song”. From there, “Tall Boy” jammed us back into “Driving Song”…then “Airplane” took us over many different spaces before finding the “Drums”. “Raise the Roof” slid right in and lived up to its name before we found our way backwards out of a black hole and into “Chilly Water” to end quite the set…and show! But there was more to come in the way of a three song encore…with the crazy “Tacos are Cheap but Pizza is Expensive”, followed by “Help Me Somebody”, and finally “Porch Song” to end it all.

This September 1995 night in Oxford, Mississippi ended a great run of shows (so far) in a great little town. Always lots of energy to spread around and this performance certainly had its share. Who knows, maybe they’ll end up in Oxford again one of they days…that’s certainly long overdue too!

As always, keep in mind that when listening to these Porch Song releases, what you’re really hearing is a recording of what came through the house speakers the night of the show…so there is no post-show engineering opportunity to dial in each instrument and vocal to perfection as there is with the Widespread Panic Multitrack Releases. So, what you’ll occasionally find on these Porch Song recordings is a bit of digital noise, static and maybe even a quick drop out resulting from the onstage recording process and/or the ravages of tape degradation. For this release, we’ve selected a show that’s once again pretty damn clean…except for a small spot in Proving Ground…but to get there…as always, we’ve preserved what we could, doctored up what we’ve been able to…and, in this ongoing process, have refused to let a minor blemish or two prevent the spreading of this amazing music. So, sit back, settle in and let Widespread Panic take you on another incredible journey.

Feedback is always welcome and I really do listen…I promise. So drop me a line at archives@widespreadpanic.com

When Wilco made their debut of Britain’s Glastonbury Festival back in 1999, they delivered a set chock full of gems from the Summerteeth LP which was released a few months before the fest. They also threw in a handful of tunes from 1996′s Being There including the opening track – Misunderstood.

Professionally shot videos from Wilco’s Glastonbury ’99 have popped up on YouTube, one of which is the wicked version of Misunderstood featuring the late Jay Bennett on guitar. Check it out…

Technology Tuesday: Tracking New Tunes With Qusic

0
0

The size of digital streaming libraries of the popular music services are staggering. With tens of millions of tracks and thousands added daily, it is easy to overlook freshly added tracks by your favorite artists. Without the cumbersome task of constantly searching dozens or even hundreds of artists, there’s often no easy way of tracking new tunes. Qusic hopes to solve this problem.

Qusic is a handy service that can notify you via an email when new tracks are added by your favorite band or artist. While the service currently only monitors and works with Spotify, there are plans of adding other digital services as well. Similarly, even if Spotify is not your choice of music streaming service, there’s often an incredibly high correlation between releases there and on the other major services like MOG, rdio and Deezer.

Qusic is easy to use. Simply head to Qusic.co.uk and sign in with your existing Google or Facebook credentials. If you’d prefer, you can also register as a new user without using existing accounts. Then, just add artists that you want to track.

You can add new artists that you want to track in one of three ways. 1) If you are tracking artists with gig finding site, Songkick, you can quickly import all of your artists from that account. 2) There’s a handy bookmarklet which allows you to add an artist after clicking when browsing a page about an artist. This works extremely well when watching a YouTube video for example. 3) Finally, you can of course manually add artists.

[Qusic Interface]

Now What? Once you build your list of artists that you want to track, there’s nothing more to do. When Spotify adds tracks (either new releases or new tracks to the service) you’ll get an email with all of the details on the new tracks. Conveniently of course, the tracks are hyper-linked so you can immediately start listening. Unless you want to add new artists or stop tracking one, there’s really no reason that you’d have to go back to the site. For the time being, while it does seem to be a beautifully designed site, it is simply a handy email notification service. (What a whopper of an email last week with the addition of all the Pink Floyd tracks!)

Limitations Again, for the time being, the only service that Qusic tracks is Spotify. This is expected to change with more services being offered in the future. Also, this is technically a UK based service and the US catalog isn’t always 100% the same. It is possibly you may miss a notification or be notified of something not available, due to licensing, in the US. I’ve been using the service for several months and tracked a handful of artists and all of the notification came promptly after the actual US addition and the tracks were all available.

[Qusic Notification E-Mail]

Bottom Line Quick and easy way of seeing what new tracks are added to Spotify via a simple e-mail notification. It will be interesting to see if Qusic does indeed continue to expand its reach of services that they cover and add new regions as well. In the meantime, while simple and narrow scope, the service works well and the site looks great.

Winner! Last week, we looked at Jackery batteries and had one for a give-away. Congratulations to “Mark H.” who was randomly chosen as the winner. Keep an eye out in the next couple weeks for some other charging solutions and more give aways.

QUSIC Free to use, no subscription needed.

From the minute Phish walked off the stage at Madison Square Garden early in the morning on the first day of 2013, fans have been clamoring for information on where the band would play next. Today, after nearly two and a half months of speculation, the HT faves have finally revealed their plan for Summer Tour 2013.

Phish will embark on a month-long tour that kicks off with a rare outdoor show in Maine at the Bangor Waterfront Pavilion and ends on August 5th at the Hollywood Bowl. Along the way the quartet will mostly visit venues they’ve played before with a handful of new spots thrown in for good measure. In addition to the tour, Phish will also return to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado for what’s turned into a Labor Day Weekend tradition.

Here’s a look at the full list of Phish Summer Tour Dates…

July 3 @ Bangor Waterfront Pavilion – Bangor, Maine
July 5 – 7 @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center – Saratoga Springs, New York
July 9 @ Molson Amphitheatre – Toronto, Ontario
July 10 @ PNC Bank Arts Center – Holmdel, New Jersey
July 12 @ Nikon at Jones Beach Theater – Wantagh, New York
July 13 – 14 @ Merriweather Post Pavilion – Columbia, Maryland
July 16 – 17 @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre – Alpharetta, Georgia
July 19 – 21 @ Northerly Island – Chicago, Illinois
July 26 – 27 @ Gorge Amphitheatre – George, Washington
July 30 – 31 @ Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys – Stateline, Nevada
August 2 – 4 @ Bill Graham Civic Auditorium – San Francisco, California
August 5 @ Hollywood Bowl – Los Angeles, California
August 30 – September 1 @ Dick’s Sporting Goods Park – Commerce City, Colorado

A lottery for tickets is currently underway through Music Today. Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning March 30th. Speaking of traditions, once again we’ve assembled lots of info about every venue Phish will play this summer…

Bangor Waterfront Pavilion

Capacity: Approx. 16,000

Previously at Bangor Waterfront Pavilion: Phish will make their Bangor Waterfront Pavilion debut in July.

Seating Chart:

Skinny: Promoter Alex Gray started throwing shows at what’s turned into Maine’s premier outdoor venue during the Summer of 2010. In its first three years of operation, the Bangor venue has reportedly pumped $30 million into the local economy. Gray has big plans for this summer with the Pavilion offering its most diverse lineup yet and planning a “more pleasant” concert experience. Phish played Bangor on November 2nd, 1994 and delivered a 30+ minute Tweezer that was released on their first live album – A Live One.

Saratoga Performing Arts Center

Capacity: 25,100

Previously at SPAC: 11 Shows – 07/27/1992, 07/10/1994, 06/26/1995, 06/19/2004, 06/20/2004, 08/16/2009, 06/19/2010, 06/20/2010, 07/06/2012, 07/07/2012, 07/08/2012

Seating Chart:

The Skinny: Opened in 1966, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, aka SPAC, sits in the middle of Saratoga Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs, New York. Phish made their first visit to SPAC as an opening act for Santana on July 27, 1992. They came back for a headlining gig on July 10, 1994 and then another show the following summer (June 26, 1995). Nearly nine years later Phish finally returned to SPAC for an epic two-night stand on June 19 and 20, 2004. The quartet has played this venue in 2009 and 2010, not in 2011 when they visited Bethel Woods, and came back in 2012 and now in 2013.

Molson Canadian Amphitheatre

[CC-BY-SA-3.0/Mikerussell at Wikipedia]

Capacity: 16,000

Previously at Molson Amphitheatre: 2 Shows – 7/20/1999 and 07/06/2000

Seating Chart:

[via MolsonAmphitheatre.net]

Skinny: Canadian fans have been chomping at the bit for Phish to finally make their return to Canada. It only took 13 years, but Phish is coming back to the Great White North at the only Canadian venue they’ve played this century. Phish last performed at the Molson Amphitheatre on July 6th, 2000 which is also their last show in Canada. The 2000 show was the band’s second in two summers, as they made their Molson Amphitheatre debut on July 20th, 1999. This venue features three levels (100s, 200s and 300s = 5,500 seats) of covered reserved seating, an additional level of uncovered reserved seating (400s = 3,500 seats) and a general admission lawn (7,000 capacity).

PNC Bank Arts Center

Capacity: 17,500

Previously at PNC Bank Arts Center: 9 Shows – 07/11/1992, 07/19/1992, 07/02/1994, 07/15/1999, 07/16/1999, 06/28/2000, 06/29/2000, 05/31/2011, 06/01/2011

Seating Chart:

[via Ticketmaster]

Skinny: One of the first amphitheaters Phish ever played back in 1992, the band returned in 1994 and then again for two-night stands in 1999, 2000 and 2011. Located approximately 45 minutes from New York City, at the top of the Jersey Shore, the shed is located right next to State Police barracks, so be careful in the lots. The 100, 200 and 300 section of the venue is covered, while the 400s are reserved but uncovered.

Nikon at Jones Beach Theater

[CC-BY-SA-3.0/R. Sullivan at Wikipedia]

Capacity: 15,000

Previously at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater: 13 Shows – 07/12/1992, 07/24/1992, 07/23/1993, 07/15/1994, 06/28/1995, 06/29/1995, 06/02/2009, 06/04/2009, 06/05/2009, 08/17/2010, 08/18/2010, 07/03/2012, 07/04/2012

Seating Chart:

Skinny: From a set at H.O.R.D.E. on July 12, 1992 through a two-night stand to mark the Fourth of July in 2012, Phish has played a total of 13 shows at Jones Beach. Located approximately 35 miles from Times Square, Jones Beach went Phish-less from a two-night stand in 1995 through a three-night run at the start of Summer Tour 2009. Though the group returned the next summer for the Summer Tour 2010 closers, at which a fan leaped from the venue’s balcony, they did not play Jones Beach in 2011. Phish came back last summer for the aforementioned two-night July 4th run. Bear in mind this venue is located in a State Park and patroled vigorously by rangers. Back in October the venue was ravaged by SuperStorm Sandy, but venue officials are planning to have the theater back in tip-top shape by the start of the summer concert season.

Merriweather Post Pavilion

[Photo via Merriweather Post Pavilion FB Page]

Capacity: 19,316

Previously at Merriweather Post Pavilion: 9 Shows – 7/17/1992, 08/08/1998, 07/09/1999, 09/17/2000, 8/15/2009, 06/26/2010, 06/27/2010, 06/11/2011, 06/12/2011

Seating Chart:

[Photo via Merriweather Post Pavilion Unofficial Site]

Synopsis: This Frank Gehry-designed venue, located approximately half way between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., opened in 1967. While the pavilion offers nice views and good sound, the lawn is notorious for poor sound and sight lines. In recent years, event promoters have beefed up the lawn sound system but you still want to be inside. Phish first performed at MPP on July 17, 1992 as the opening act for Santana and have returned each summer since reforming in 2009 with the exception of 2012.

Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park

Capacity: 12,000

Previously at Alpharetta: 4 Shows - 7/3/20107/4/20106/14/2011, 6/15/2011

Seating Chart:

Skinny: This venue opened in 2008 and won raves from concert attendees immediately. Phish first played this shed in the summer of 2010 and the fans loved the neighborhood and GA floor. The band returned the next summer for a two-night stand, but surprisingly moved the 2012 ATL summer tour stop to the more urban environs of Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood. VZW at Encore Park holds a total of 12,000 fans, split into 7,000 under the roof and 5,000 on the lawn.

Northerly Island

Capacity: To Be Determined

Previously at Lakewood: Phish will make their Northerly Island debut in 2013

Seating Chart:

To Be Determined

Skinny: Phish will return to the City of Chicago this summer for a three-night stand on Northerly Island. There’s much which isn’t currently known about the site as it is undergoing major renovations and supposedly the capacity will increase as part of a new configuration.

The Gorge

[CC-BY-GEN-2.0/YDHSU at Flickr]

Capacity: 23,000

Previously at The Gorge: 12 Shows – 08/02/1997, 08/03/1997, 07/16/1998, 07/17/1998, 09/10/1999, 09/11/1999, 07/12/2003, 07/13/2003, 08/07/2009, 08/08/2009, 08/05/2011, 08/06/2011

Seating Chart:

Skinny: One of the nation’s most gorgeous places to see a concert, The Gorge sits on the banks of the Columbia River. Phish first visited the George, Washington venue during their 1997 Summer Tour for a two-night stand and returned the next summer for another two-show run. The band returned early in their 1999 Fall Tour for another pair of shows. After skipping The Gorge in 2000, they made sure to visit during their first post-hiatus summer tour in 2003. Now, Phish seems to be on an “every other year” plan as they’ve performed two shows at the venue in 2009, 2011 and are set to play The Gorge in 2013.

Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harvey’s

[via APE Concerts]

Capacity: 7,000 – 7,200

Previously at Harvey’s: 2 Shows – 08/09/2011 and 08/10/2011

Seating Chart:

Skinny: During the second leg of Phish’s 2011 Summer Tour, the band made their first visit to scenic Lake Tahoe. The venue they played at was a glorified parking lot adjacent to the Harvey’s Hotel/Casino and the lake itself. Those with rooms on the right side of Harvey’s could even watch the show from their balconies. Tickets sold out quickly in 2011 and are expected to do so again this time around.

Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

 [CC-BY-SA-3.0/J. Ash Bowie at Wikipedia]

Capacity: Up To 8,500

Previously at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium: 3 Shows – 08/17/2012, 08/18/2012, 08/19/2012

Seating Chart:

[All Seating Charts via Ticketmaster.com Except Where Mentioned]

Skinny: A rare set of indoor summer shows, this marks Phish’s second summer playing a three-night stand at the venue named after famed impresario Bill Graham in a row. This venue was built in 1916 and has been used by West Coast promoters Another Planet Entertainment for concerts such as Phish’s three-night stand. Only two blocks away from a BART station, mass transit is a much wiser option than trying to find parking.

Hollywood Bowl

[CC-2.5/Matt Field at Wikipedia]

Capacity: 17,376

Previously at Hollywood Bowl: 1 Show – 08/08/2011

Seating Chart:

Skinny: Another iconic venue, the Hollywood Bowl opened on July 11, 1922 and has hosted a who’s who of musical acts from all genres over the last 91 years. Located in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles, Hollywood Bowl holds the distinction of the largest natural amphitheater in the United States. Phish made their Hollywood Bowl debut on August 8th, 2011 for a show that’s just as notable for LD Chris Kuroda’s jaw-dropping usage of the venue’s signature bandshell as for the music the band played.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Park

Previously at Dick’s:  6 Shows – 08/31/2012, 09/01/2012, 09/02/2012, 09/02/2011, 09/03/2011, 09/04/2011

Seating Chart:

[via Venue Website]

Skinny: Apparently the band felt the same way about the past two years’ Labor Day Weekend run of shows at Dick’s as the fans did since Phish will return to the soccer stadium for their third three-day run in a row. Last year’s three-night stand was among the best of the era and featured one highlight after another, while the 2011 Dick’s run wasn’t too shabby either. Home to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park opened in 2007.

As we reported earlier this week, Phish keyboardist Page McConnell kicked off his 2013 touring schedule with The Meter Men at Tampa’s Gasparilla Festival in Florida on Saturday night. The quartet worked The Meters’ Funkify Your Life into a bit of Loggins/Messina’s 1972 hit Your Mama Don’t Dance.

Bassist George Porter Jr. handled the vocals. Check out a video from our pal thefiveguy

Next up for The Meter Men with Page McConnell is a March 22nd show at NYC’s Grand Ballroom.

Weekly RecommNeds: Dylan Ryan Sand / Joseph Tawadros

Would you stand up and walk out on me?

Dylan Ryan Sand: Sky Bleached

One of my favorite jazz albums of the 1Q 2013 thus far is this one from this Californian guitar-bass-drum trio. First off, great band name. Being both the drummer and the composer/bandleader, Dylan Ryan is a rarity, but his rhythmic approach to the music gives it that something extra. But it’s his friends in the band that help make it special, the guitar especially channeling the unique laid-back aggression of Bill Frisell. This is the good stuff.

Joseph Tawadros: Chameleons of the White Shadow

According to Wikipedia, Joseph Tawadros is an “oud virtuoso from Australia.” According to his latest album, he is a multi-ethnic jammer who convinced some pretty talented friends to help him in the studio. This record is one awesome track after another punctuated by combinations and permutations of heavy hitters like Bela Fleck on banjo, Roy Ayers on vibes and Joey DeFrancesco on organ. Thanks to PZ for the recommendation!

Steve Earle Among Allman Brothers Band Guests @ Beacon

We’ve reached the home stretch of the Allman Brothers Band’s March Madness run at New York City’s Beacon Theatre. Last night the legendary Southern Rockers welcomed a number of guests for their seventh of the 11 shows that make up this year’s run.

While the Allmans have been filling most recent shows with repeats, which is expected by show number seven and isn’t a knock on them, they are still finding spots to dust off classics. For instance, the group opened last night’s show with the first Sailin’ ‘cross The Devil’s Sea of the run. The opening stanza also included Spots of Time, one of the new originals the Allmans have debuted this month. Beacon Run regulars The Juke Horns made multiple appearances throughout the night starting with Don’t Keep Me Wondering towards the end of Set One. The Juke Horns stuck around for another version of Dylan/Manuel’s Tears Of Rage which was debuted one week earlier and a set-closing rendition of Same Thing that also included contributions from keyboardist Bruce Katz.

Set One: Sailin ‘cross the Devil’s Sea, Walk on Gilded Splinters, Trouble No More, Spots Of Time, Statesboro Blues, Don’t Keep Me Wondering (w/ Juke Horns), Tears of Rage (w/ Juke Horns), Same Thing (w/ Juke Horns & Bruce Katz)

Set Two: Knockin On Heaven’s Door (w/ Steve Earle & Bruce Katz), Copperhead Road (w/ Steve and Bruce), One Way Out (w/ Bruce), No One To Run With, Been Loving You Too Long (w/ Juke Horns, just Jaimoe on drums), To Know You Is To Love You (w/ Juke Horns), Les Brers

Encore: Whipping Post

[via Allman Brothers Band forum]

When the Allman Brothers Band returned for the second set, they brought out Katz and singer-songwriter Steve Earle for a killer rendition of Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door. Earle last performed the Dylan cover with the Brothers at the Beacon during the 2011 Run. Both Earle and Katz stayed out for Earle’s Copperhead Road – an Allmans debut. Bruce Katz was a featured performer on a mid-set One Way Out. Towards the end of the set, The Juke Horns returned for a two-song stretch of covers: Otis Redding’s Been Loving You Too Long and Stevie Wonder/Syreeta Wright’s To Know You Is To Love You. A long and jammed out Les Brers and Whipping Post encore brought the evening to a close.

The Allmans return to the Beacon tonight. Watch Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door with Steve Earle…

Video: Son Volt – Hearts and Minds

Fans on the Jay Farrar side of the “Tupelo Divide” appear to be in for a big treat as the lead single off the album Honky Tonk catches Son Volt at their very finest. Farrar’s vocals sound like they did 15 years ago and the instrumentation is accented nicely by well-directed fiddle and pedal steel melodies. It’s back to basics for Son Volt and it sounds great.

CMT Edge premiered the video last week and Bill Bentley of the Morton Report has a thoughtful album review with more insight.

You Can Own Little Feat Keyboardist Billy Payne’s Gear

Earlier this week we broke the news that two of Jerry Garcia’s effects pedals are up for auction and now we’ve got another set of auctions we think our readers will be interested in. A number of Little Feat keyboardist Billy Payne’s keyboards as well as other gear are up for auction.

California-based musical instrument seller Techno Empire has listed four pieces of gear owned by Payne. Among the items up for sale are Billy’s Hammond B3 Organ, Fender Rhodes Seventy-Three and speaker, an anvil-style road rack flight case, and a Yamaha CS-80 synth. It appears these items were used by Payne in the early days of Little Feat’s revival which started in 1988. Most of the keyboards have been used extensively and are listed in “very good” condition. Unlike the Garcia gear auctions, there are very high “Buy It Now” prices listed for Billy Payne’s keyboards. Have an extra five grand lying around? Buy Payne’s B3 organ. Have $2,800 handy? Billy’s Rhodes can be all yours. The flight case is only $200.

Railroad Earth @ Best Buy Theatre – March 9

Words: Chadbyrne Dickens
Photos: Kylla Delisio

One of the prominent leaders in the current jamgrass revolution showcased their immense talent last week by returning to New York City for the first time in a year at the sold-out Best Buy Theatre. Formed in 2001, New Jersey ‘s own Railroad Earth consists of Todd Sheaffer (Lead vocals), Tim Carbone (Violin, electric guitar), John Skehan (Mandolin, Irish bouzouki), Andy Goessling (Acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophones), Carey Harmon (Drums) and Andrew Altman (Bass). The band’s name pays homage to a short story by Jack Kerouac.

With their patented sound including consistent rocking rhythms and gyrating grooves, Railroad Earth seems to improve every year. By mixing up a consistent rotation of bluegrass, Celtic, jazz, jam and rock, one is consistently challenged to anticipate what melodic structure or sound will come next. This particular incarnation of RRE showcased deeper and more fulfilling jams than in the past. The members played well off each other and appropriately filled in the spaces with exploratory instrumental magic. Black Elk > Spring-Heeled Jack was an appropriate opening complete with an intricate call and response jam. After the warm up, a Lake A Buddha > 1/2 Jiggy > Where Songs Begin segment fueled the crowd with its abundant energy.

Other highlights included a ripping Spring Heeled Jack, already an impressive 11 minutes on their self-titled fifth album, but now expanded even further and contained ridiculous, lengthy and intense fiddle noodling solos by Carbone. Although a professional band steeped in talent, sometimes the compliment of the band feels like a house band simply to showcase Carbone’s genius.

Up-tempo songs like a cover of Tom Waits’ Cold Water incited a danceathon. The jams were more meticulous and effective than the traditional RRE show. To many, the definitive standout moment was the festive Just So You Know with masterful mandolin picking accentuating Donna the Buffalo’s Tara Nevins on washboard and Jeb Puryear on electric guitar as they entranced the crowd as well as they had during DtB’s blistering opening set. Railroad Earth managed to galvanize a large crowd’s attention for hours. Near the closing of the second set, Birds of America proved a rapid knee-slapping party that was surreal and trancy.

The show as regarded by pontificating fans afterwards as one of the best in recent memory. Amidst a sea of quickly ascending acts like Yonder Mountain String Band, Cornmeal, Infamous Stringdusters and Cabinet, Railroad Earth again proved why they are consistently mentioned at the top of the list when one is discussing the most prolific jamgrass bands today. The band continues to extensively tour with upcoming stops in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Colorado.

Set 1: Black Elk Speaks>Spring-Heeled Jack, Cold Water, Came Up Smilin’, A Day on the Sand, Like a Buddha>1/2 Jiggy>Where Songs Begin

Set 2: The Forecast>River Intro Jam>Mighty River (A)>Colorado>Flower Between the Stones>
Gold Rush>Just So You Know (B), Birds of America>Stillwater Getaway

Encores: Bird in a House, Peace on Earth (A)

(A): with Sheryl Renee and Charlie Kay on vocals
(B): Donna the Buffalo’s Tara Nevins on washboard and Jeb Puryear on electric guitar

Phil Lesh Visits TRI Studios For Memorable Weir Here

Phil Lesh made his first appearance on Bob Weir’s Weir Here talk show one to remember last night at TRI Studios. Lesh emerged halfway through a version of Sugar Magnolia featuring Weir on acoustic guitar that kicked off the show and stuck around for nearly an hour and a half of the two hour show before departing for his own venue.

Following Sugar Magnolia, the Grateful Dead / Furthur band mates offered impressive duo versions of Cosmic Charlie and Loose Lucy before bringing out multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby for a passionate take on Jack Straw. Then, Weir headed over to his desk, which is the same style as other talk show hosts like Jay Leno and David Letterman, where he was joined by Lesh, Grateful Dead roadie Steve Parish and the Dead’s legacy manager David Lemieux for an incredibly engaging storytelling session about the late Ron “Pigpen” McKernan. It’s not often we get to see Weir and Lesh just trading tales and they both seemed to hold nothing back frankly discussing drug and alcohol usage.

After more than 20 wonderful minutes of stories about Pigpen, Weir and Lesh headed back to their instruments for a second segment of music. The two were joined by Crosby and Furthur drummer Joe Russo for a three-song stretch that included an interesting arrangement of Operator, Lazy River Road sung by Crosby and a Playing In The Band that alternated between laidback and intense. A second round at Bobby’s desk didn’t go quite as well, but featured a hilarious discussion about turning the Grateful Dead into a religion. Weir was set to close out his show when musician Cass McCombs made his way to the performance set, so Bobby decided to give the webcast audience an additional number even though Lesh had departed for Terrapin Crossroads. The versatile Crosby picked up the bass and accompanied Weir, Russo and McCombs on a Friend Of The Devil that closed out the broadcast.

The Juke Horns came back out towards the end of the closing stanza for covers of Bob Dylan’s Blind Willie McTell and Into The Mystic by Van Morrison before serving up Jessica to end the set. The Juke Horns re-emerged for a Southbound encore that brought the night to a close. While the Allmans have a night off, they return to the Beacon tomorrow to start three shows in three nights that will bring the run to a close.

Cover Alert: Soulive w/ Marco Benevento, David Hidalgo & London Souls – Ohio > Down By The River (Neil Young)

Soulive’s annual Bowlive Run at Brooklyn Bowl continued last night in Williamsburg. Special guests included keyboardist Marco Benevento, Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo, The Shady Horns and opening act The London Souls. For the encore, Soulive welcomed their guests up, with the exception of the horns, for a 20-plus-minute tribute to Neil Young.

Soulive, Benevento, Hidalgo and The London Souls kicked off the encore with the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young protest song Ohio sung by Tash Neal. The CSNY cover morphed into Neil Young’s Down By The River on which Tash shared vocals with Alan Evans. Once Tash, Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno and Hidalgo were finished taking turns soloing, the Los Lobos guitarist stepped to the mic to deliver a verse of Buffalo Springfield’s For What It’s Worth.

Our pal MKDevo captured the entire encore for our viewing pleasure…

Bowlive IV continues tonight with special guests Bill Evans and John Medeski.
