Last fall jam-rockers Tea Leaf Green successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the recording of their latest studio album. The album, which features a batch of songs the San Francisco-based band has yet to perform live, is called In The Wake and will be released on May 14th.

The group will celebrate the release of In The Wake at The Independent in San Francisco on May 18th in which they will debut tunes from the LP in the first set. In The Wake was recorded at Oakland’s Coyote Hearing and features guest appearances by Dan Lebowitz (ALO), Leslie Helpert, the Jazz Mafia Horns and “many more.” Some of those guests will join the band for the show in San Francisco.

TLG also announced that they will play a pair of shows in Southern California on May 10th (The Roxy in Los Angeles) and May 11th (Belly Up in San Diego). At those shows the group will perform two of their previous albums in their entirety: Taught To Be Proud in L.A. and Living In Between in San Diego. NME gave The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr its Godlike Genius lifetime achievement award tonight in London and he made it worth the magazine’s while when he performed a six-song set that included The Smiths’ classic How Soon Is Now? Marr was joined by Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones and Justin Young of The Vaccines for How Soon Is Now? which The Smiths rarely played live between its debut in 1985 and Marr’s departure from the band in 1987.

[Johnny Marr and Ronnie Wood]

The Rolling Stones nabbed two awards – Best Live Band and Best Music Film (Crossfire Hurricane), but Wood didn’t perform with his main band on this night. Instead the evening belonged to Marr who recently released The Messenger – his solo debut. Marr’s set also included a cover of I Fought The Law. Take a look at Johnny performing How Soon Is Now? with Ronnie and Justin Young…

The B List: The Ten Worst Workout Songs

0
0

Ed Watts, who wrote a B List about talkbox songs, is back with another B List…

According to NPR, four out of five of the people who buy gym memberships stop going within a couple of months. In order to help you avoid a similar fate, I’m giving you a list of the 10 songs that you absolutely must not put on your iPod as you prepare to head to the elliptical.

10. What Became of the Baby – Grateful Dead: Your mind will be too completely blown to workout. Not to mention that at this tempo, you might crack a 168-minute-mile.

Click here to view the embedded video.

9. Chushingura – Jefferson Airplane: You will spend the whole time trying to figure out whats wrong with your iPod and why it’s emitting that high-pitch noise.

Click here to view the embedded video.

8. Start Me Up – Rolling Stones: At first, this will seem like the perfect workout song, then about halfway through you’ll realize that you’ll never be in as good shape as Mick Jagger, who at nearly 70 is still dancing around the stage for three hours, while you’re struggling to “jog” for five minutes.

Click here to view the embedded video.

7. Black Dog – Led Zeppelin: This too will seem perfect at first, but then you will realize that the drum and guitar parts are in different time signatures, and you will get seriously injured.

Click here to view the embedded video.

6. The Needle and the Damage Done – Neil Young: You will be too depressed to do anything, let alone lift heavy objects.

Click here to view the embedded video.

5. Taurus – Spirit: Not only is there no beat, but you’ll be so distracted by the fact that Jimmy Page ripped off the beginning of Stairway to Heaven from this song, that you’ll re-injure yourself.

4. You Enjoy Myself – Phish: You will stop working out and start pulling tubes.

3. John Lennon and Yoko Ono – Two Virgins: The music will make you feel slightly nauseous, and then, as the cover art of the album appears on your iPod, you will see two people very accepting of their own bodies, and it will make you want to accept yours without all the suffering.

2. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun – Pink Floyd: Syd and company will get so deep inside your head that you’ll spend your entire time at the gym trying to freak out the uptight corporate drones in the weight room.

1. Revolution #9 – The Beatles : This song has been scientifically proven to kill all motivation to do anything.

This Monday: D’Angelo w/ Questlove @ Brooklyn Bowl

Over the past few days The Roots drummer Questlove has been warning his Twitter followers to keep their eyes on Brooklyn Bowl’s feed  as they’ll only “have like 3 mins to swipe CC.” Late last night we’ve found out what Questo was hinting at when he revealed that he’ll perform a “duet set” with neo-soul singer D’Angelo at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on Monday night.

D’Angelo has only played a handful of gigs stateside since 2000 including an appearance with Questlove at last year’s Bonnaroo Super Jam that featured a slew of covers. Questo produced D’Angelo’s latest album which the drummer recently said was expected to be completed in February. Tickets will be available starting at 10AM through the Brooklyn Bowl website.

Video: Thao & The Get Down Stay Down – We The Common

The title track from Thao & The Get Down Stay Down’s latest record We The Common is a upbeat number that features hand claps and a cheery chorus of back-up singers cooing oohs and aahs. Dedicated to Valerie Bolden, the tune was inspired by an advocacy visit that Thao Nguyen made to a woman’s prison, where she met Bolden, who was serving a life sentence without parole. The conversation that Nguyen and Bolden had that day, had a profound impact on the singer-songwriter, which she recounts prior to this live in-studio performance. Let’s check it out…

For this week’s Full Show Friday we take the Hidden Track Time Machine back to 2002 for a stirring performance by Neil Young with Poncho and The MGs. Ol’ Neil was headlining the Rock am Ring Festival in Nürburgring, Germany with a band that mixed Crazy Horse guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro with Booker T. and The MGs and his whole set was broadcast on famed German live music show Rockpalast.

Young was in fine form on this night as he mixed his greatest songs such as The Loner, Cinnamon Girl, Cortez The Killer and Down By The River with what was then more recent material such as Sleeps With Angels and Let’s Roll. The quality of the footage is stunning, but you’ll stay for the performance.

Here’s the setlist…

When You Dance I Can Really Love / The Loner / Differently / Sleeps With Angels / Are You Passionate? / Goin’ Home / Cinnamon Girl / Cortez The Killer / Let’s Roll / Powderfinger / Quit (Don’t Say You Love Me) / She’s A Healer / All Along The Watchtower / Two Old Friends / Mr. Soul / Down By The River // F*!#in’ Up / Helpless
