Last year Mumford and Sons threw a series of multi-band festivals dubbed “Gentleman Of The Road Stopovers” in small cities across the U.S. and in the U.K. The band described the events as such…

“The Gentlemen of the Road Stopover is based loosely upon our favourite festivals like Colorado’s Telluride Bluegrass and Scotland’s Loopallu Festivals. We want to stop off in towns not usually heavily toured by bands, and celebrate the people, food and music that inhabit them. We’re keen to promote the town’s local businesses, and we’ll be using the local bars and venues for aftershow parties, whilst working closely with the local people to get everyone involved in making these shows spectacular.

There will be a host of our friends playing too, and the vibe falls somewhere between ‘travelling Victorian circus’ and ‘Victorian travelling circus’. It should be a whole lot of fun.”

A Dose Of The Dead @ Capitol Theatre on February 16

The Grateful Dead played many killer concerts at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York back in the early ’70s. Grateful Dead legacy manager David Lemieux will spin one of those shows, 2/24/71, at the historic venue on February 16th, complete with a full light show.

“It’s no secret that the Grateful Dead loved playing at the Capitol Theatre,” says the band’s archivist David Lemieux in a press release. “The show, from 2/24/71, the final Grateful Dead show at the Capitol, and the last show of a six night run, features many recently-debuted songs (“Bertha,” “Loser,” “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Playing In The Band,” “Deal,” and “Bird Song”), as well as a Pigpen-centric batch of great music, including “I’m A King Bee,” “Good Lovin’,” and “Lovelight,” with these latter two clocking in at nearly 20 minutes each.” This show has yet to be released by the band.

After Lemieux is done spinning 2/24/71,  the theatre will play a greatest unreleased hits “mixtape” assembled by the archivist, pulled directly from the vault and including tracks from a recently discovered batch of tapes from 1969-70 that will be used for Dave’s Picks Vol. 6.

Tickets will be available tomorrow, Feb. 6, at 12PM ET.

Here’s the setlist to find out what you can expect…

Weekly RecommNeds: The Holydrug Couple / Opossom

I’m back!  Easing into my 2013 listening, may reach back to some of last year’s leftovers while moving on with this year’s goodies. Enjoy!

The Holydrug Couple:  Noctuary

Lest you thought it was just a 2012 fad, an early favorite from the first month of the new year is a psych-rock keeper following in the footsteps of Tame Impala et al. Hailing from Santiago, Chile, the duo  play a dreamy out-of-body music that’s equal parts cowboys on the windswept prairie and outerspace voyage. Lots of ear pastry to gorge yourself on here: layers of tripped-out guitar fuzz and gooey bass and beyond.

Opossom: Electric Hawaii

Keeping the dreamy otherworldly, other-side-of-the-world thing going, Opossom, from New Zealand (and lead former member of Unknown Mortal Orchestra Ruban Neilson) are a psychedelic band more on the pop side of the spectrum – a groovier, more beachy sound.  In fact, the music on this superb album is best summed up in its title Electric Hawaii – kind of a Beach Boys meets the Flaming Lips meets Beck kind of thing with gauzy harmonies, drum-machine beats and infectious songs. Check it out!

Video: Delaney & Bonnie (with Eric Clapton) – Poor Elijah

Today’s video highlights the underrated husband and wife soul revue perhaps best known for being the first white group to sign with Stax, encouraging Eric Clapton to sing and teaching George Harrison to play slide. While the band was not a large success on Stax, their influence on a wide range of more famous musicians has been well documented, and seem to be undergoing a resurgence in popularity of late with their unique blend of harmonic vocals, soulful backing music, and classic ’60s sound.

Here’s a look at the band performing their Robert Johnson tribute song, Poor Elijah, with Clapton, on the BBC’s Price of Fame television program in 1969.

The Show Must Go On: Drummer Scott Devours Saves The Who’s Quadrophenia Concert in San Diego

What is it about California that leads The Who to need to recruit drummers named Scott to save their shows? You may recall that back in 1973 The Who were famously forced to use a young drummer pulled from the crowd named Scott Halpin at the Cow Palace in Daly City after Keith Moon was “incapacitated.” Well last night in San Diego The Who were forced to call upon the services of drummer Scott Devours for the latest show of their Quadrophenia and More Tour when current drummer Zak Starkey was unable to perform due to a tendon issue.

Who fans that were in attendance last night are raving about Devours’ work at the View Valley Casino Center and from the looks of the videos it’s clear Scott did a fantastic job. Unbelievably, Devours only had one run through of the complex material before showtime and none for the “greatest hits” encore. Devours did have experience performing the songs of The Who as the drummer in Roger Daltrey’s solo band, but not with the majority of the Quadrophenia material. The Who were lucky Starkey was unable to play a Southern California area gig as Devours lives in nearby Long Beach. “Quadrophenia’s not an easy piece,” said Roger Daltrey on The Who’s website. “To do what Scotty did took real guts.”

The Who member Simon Townshend weighed in on Devours’ performance…

Amazing gig in San Diego. Hats off to drummer Scott Devours who stepped in for Zak… Having only one Quad run thru, he was faultless. Legend

The Who are supposed to play JOBING.COM Arena in Phoenix tonight. No word yet on which drummer will perform with the band.

Introducing: Umphrey’s McGee 15th Anniversary Tour Program

Nearly as old as rock and roll itself is the concert tour program. Before the internet age took hold, you would regularly find tour programs for sale at venue merch tables for artists from all genres and levels of success. It allows fans to find out more about the band they just saw in concert and gives them a keepsake to bring home with them. In recent years the tour program has become the domain of legacy acts and mainstream hitmakers…until now. Umphrey’s McGee will sell a 48-page 15th Anniversary Concert Program through their website and at the merch table for 2013 UM concerts.

[Cover]

An editorial team consisting of Umphrey’s organization members, myself and a few other valuable contributors have spent the last six months creating a kickass document worthy of the band’s first foray into tour programs. Among the treats inside are band biographies, a look at the touring vehicles of Umphrey’s McGee throughout the years, band member-penned lists, a page for each year of the band’s existence featuring photos, multiple pages of memorabilia shots, a crossword puzzle and much more. There’s something for everyone, from UM “virgins” attending their first show to hard-core Umphreaks. The program even includes a scorecard and lists of all Umphrey’s songs and covers to help you keep track of the setlist at a particular show.

For an example of a “Year Page,” check out the 2003 page…

Before and after Monday night’s performance of A New Life by Jim James (@jimjames) on Jimmy Fallon, show house band drummer Questlove (@questlove) professed not only his affection for the single from the My Morning Jacket frontman’s first solo LP, Regions Of Sound And Of God, but for the tune itself. Ever the prolific tweeter, Questlove raved about the chance to work with the Louisville crooner in a series of tweets culminating with James responding to the drummer’s desire for the pair to record together. Who knows what will come of the tweets below, but a Jim James/Questlove collaboration would certainly be something we’d like to see.

It also wouldn’t be the first time the two collaborated for the studio, as James lent vocals and a sample of the Monsters of Folk track Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.) to The Roots for their version, Dear God 2.0, which appeared on their 2010 album How I Got Over.  Check out the video of James with The Roots for that track below the tweets.

Organizers of the Governor’s Ball Music Festival, which takes place on Randall’s Island in NYC from June 7th – 9th, are playing with fire. Not only is the always unpredictable Kanye West a top the lineup for this year’s fest, but they have just revealed that Guns N’ Roses will join Kings of Leon and West as the three headliners. Considering Kanye and GN’R front man Axl Rose have reputations for late arrivals, it’ll be interesting to see if either of ‘em wind up delaying their sets at the fest.

Outside of the headliners, the 2013 edition of the Governor’s Ball features an extremely varied lineup that below the headliners has hip-hop star Nas next to electronica faves Pretty Lights next to roots act The Avett Brothers next to indie darlings Grizzly Bear.

General admission and VIP tickets are available now through the fest’s website.

Here’s the full lineup for Governor’s Ball 2013…

Video: Perpetual Groove Says Goodbye To Fayetteville

0
0

HT faves Perpetual Groove’s farewell tour visited George’s Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Saturday night. DGold was on hand to film the entire show and has uploaded his footage to YouTube. During the show, PGroove offered a mix of classic material such as Robot Waltz and Three Weeks with newer originals including Man With All The Answers. There’s also the group’s typically bombastic cover of Peter Gabriel’s Digging In The Dirt.

Listening and watching the quartet deliver what may turn out to be one of their last performances is a bittersweet experience. There’s more than just flashes of brilliance, PGroove turned in two fantastic sets. It’s sad that in less than two months Brock Butler will part ways with a band that has been a part of his life for well over a decade. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like every song Brock sings has lyrics which fit the current situation like a glove. There’s even a tender moment in which Butler praises his band mates and speaks of the love and brotherhood that he knows will endure.

With that, take a look at PGroove’s Fayetteville Farewell…

Hitting The Trunk Road: Leroy Justice – Justice Shall Be Served

0
0

Depending on the age of the company you keep, the complaints concerning the dearth of bands keeping the spirit of classic rock and roll alive is either an intermittent interruption or a perpetually persistent protest. Unsurprisingly, those that rend their vintage Led Zeppelin T-shirts and Grateful Dead tie-dyes like rock and roll martyrs often profess ignorance at the existence of bands like My Morning Jacket, though they tend to have a fleeting knowledge of Grace Potter and “that one song” by the Alabama Shakes (except everyone remembers a different song). If you’re growing weary of cycling though the Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers and Band catalogs, rest assured, there is Justice is in this world: Leroy Justice.

If this were 1973, Leroy Justice would be headlining Madison Square Garden as part of a rambling caravan style tour. Alas, in 2013, heartfelt rock and roll that soars to enthralling levels when aired out on stage doesn’t have the ready-built audience that it did in the Seventies. It’s not that bands that draw their inspiration from the vinyl era of rock and roll are a rare breed; quite the contrary, they are legion. What makes the majority of them unfulfilling is their inclination to imitate or reinterpret riffs long perfected by classic rock radio mainstays and the bluesmen of yore rather than use them as the jumping off point for their own sound. That Leroy Justice isn’t the first band to draw on their earnest love of true rock and roll doesn’t diminish the fact that they have perfected its craft. This past month, during their civically-entitled Bowling For Justice residency at Williamsburg’s Brooklyn Bowl, Leroy Justice offered a nice reminder that bands keeping the rock ethos alive can still be a glorious revelation. To belabor the tired literary construct, justice in this regard for Justice has been well-earned. On their debut album, Revolution’s Son, Leroy Justice showed a fine aptitude for ’70s era Rolling Stones finesse and brawny, whiskey-soaked bar room rockers. Where Revolution’s Son served notice that Leroy Justice could be the wild-eyed menacing stranger that kicks in the saloon door and demands reckoning, its follow up, The Loho Sessions, showed that a wickedly keen intelligence existed beneath the feral façade and marked the first step of the band’s evolution from barroom blues rockers into a mighty rock and roll band.

Every journey has peaks and valleys; if the band’s split with guitarist Brendan Cavanaugh marked a nadir, the Bowling For Justice residency should serve as its corresponding apex. Over the years, it has seemed like it’s been lead singer Jason Gallagher’s destiny to become one of rock’s more charismatic frontmen and the Brooklyn Bowl shows highlighted the fact that he is well down that path. A truly confident singer, Gallagher draws strength from Justin Mazer’s potent lead guitar and Sloan Marshall’s timeless organ fills. With bassist Bradley Wegner and drummer Josh Karis solidifying into a powerfully effective rhythm section, Leroy Justice presently embodies all that makes rock and roll such an enriching experience.

With the breadth a residency offers at their disposal, Justice touched on their first two albums, welcomed a few guests, sprung a wide-ranging slew of covers and most significantly, previewed songs from Above The Weather, their upcoming album which will see its April release through Elm City Music with distribution through EMI/Universal. Yes folks, despite all you may have heard, there will be major label involvement with a rock and roll band and none of the members of the band are relatives of Justin Bieber or dating Taylor Swift. There may still be hope for us all.

Each night of the residency featured updated arrangements of songs like Revolution’s Son, Bender and Temporary Cure that incorporated Mazer’s take on Justice staples, the latter evolving into a set-closing improvisational showcase. The residency’s midpoint featured appearances from Particle keyboardist Steve Molitz, singer Anise White, guitarist Mike Mizwinski and a horn section led by Michael Kammers of the MK Groove Orchestra. In addition to busting out covers of Status Quo’s Pictures Of Matchstick Men, Tears For Fears’ Everybody Wants To Rule The World and Stevie Wonder’s I Wish, Justice cooked up a fine batch of Memphis Soul Stew.

On the residency’s last night, Justice resurrected their start-to-finish cover of The Beatles’ Let It Be (as opposed to The Replacements, which we would be cool in its own right; some band is free to rip that suggestion off with impunity as long as they invite me to the show) which they first performed – in full Beatlemania regalia – at their 2008 Halloween show at the Bottom Line. The true piece de resistance of the residency was the preview of material from their upcoming third album, which could ultimately lay claim to the title of rock album of the year. Songs like Blue Eyed Blues and Worry are full of Black Crowes quality grit while others like Two Trees and So Long are arena-ready anthems in the vein of My Morning Jacket. This will be a discussion we revisit in April.

OFFRAMPS AND REST STOPS

Whenever a band returns to the stage after any type of hiatus, there is always reason to rejoice. Last month, when the London Souls headlined the Bowery Ballroom as an apparent prelude to the release of their sophomore album, there was added cause to celebrate due to the uncertainty over whether guitarist Tash Neal would ever make such a return.

As the band and Neal’s family did not saturate social media with news of the guitarist’s recovery from the serious injuries he sustained in automobile accident this past summer, the future of the London Souls remained wholly unclear. A simply electrifying guitarist, Neal’s return proved gratifying from a musical standpoint and edifying in every other non-musical perspective. While reviews of the Here Come The Girls, the Souls’ new album, have surfaced, the album hasn’t. If the Bowery Ballroom show serves as any indication though, the new songs lack the energy of their self-titled debut and Neal’s recovery may very likely prove to be a bigger story than the new album.

One of the more interesting releases this year has been Lysandre, the solo debut of Christopher Owens, which in a slightly literary turn serves as a partial autobiography of the former Girls’ lead singer. The album imparts the tale of a songwriter hitting the road for the first time with his band, meeting an ex-boyfriend and finding a new girlfriend. For most musicians, this would seem like an insipidly self-indulgent endeavor and it may not be tremendously unfair for anyone to direct that criticism here.

Detached from the other members of Girls, the medieval flutes, orchestral flourishes and Donovan-like hippie meanderings that underscored his previous band’s efforts are given unfettered room to breathe. This difference may cause some to react to Lysandre like a toga-clad Bluto confronting a folk singer in a fraternity house stairwell (how does one smash an mp3 to pieces?) but there’s soul searching honesty to the album that makes it a compelling listen. Girls is just one facet of Owens genuinely interesting life story, which includes being raised under the tenets of a religious cult and developing a relationship with a philanthropist/subversive artist presently being sued for the sexual abuse of teenage boys; he is simply too fascinating a character to ignore.

Too often, we marginalize music as uncool in the belief that it’s the type of music our parents would enjoy. Funny to think that the classic rock and jambands we relish today will one day cause our children to groan and pitch a hissy-fit cause they want to listen to the latest electronic hip-hop boy band that’s all the rage. Nonetheless, singers like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Antonio Carlos Jobim seem to be exempt from such passive-aggressive scorn, though the latter is not as widely known. On From Gainsbourg To Lulu, Lulu Gainsbourg, the son of hipster Serge Gainsbourg, wades deeply into the cooler-than-thou waters of yesteryear. On his intriguing debut, Gainsbourg seamlessly moves from straightforward jazz to Iggy Pop fronted rockers with a startling ambivalence to genre or convention. Of note, he and Scarlett Johannson cover Bonnie & Clyde, his father’s duet with Brigitte Bardot, in a manner that pays as much homage to the song as to its original singers.

Conspirator @ Chameleon Club – February 2

Words and Photos: Matthew Hebert

Hot on the heels of dropping their latest EP, Unleashed, Conspirator has hit the road on an ambitious coast-to-coast tour that will have dance floors shaking with their signature brand of live electronic adrenaline. Toss in a couple stops at the AURA and Euphoria music festivals, as well as a just announced UMass arena show with Rusko, and you might start to question how long you can really keep calling Conspirator a “Disco Biscuits side project.”

[All Photos By Matthew Hebert]

If you are on tour promoting an album named Unleashed that has an enraged gorilla on the cover, you better come out swinging hard. And despite kicking off their tour only a few days prior, that’s exactly what they did when they arrived in Lancaster, Pennslyvania. Opening with Tumblr, a dirty groove with heavy Chris Michetti-driven guitar riiffs and a song typically saved to close out the night, was a statement that Conspirator is focused on pushing their power-soaked dance tracks to new peaks. In addition to Tumblr, every track from Unleashed found its way into the setlist on this night and received the proper live treatment with “classic” tracks to fill out the set. Those familiar with Conspirator’s relatively small but growing live catalog know that many tracks from Unleashed been in the group’s live rotation for some time.

Each band member seems very comfortable in their respective roles within Conspirator. Chris Michetti (RAQ) continues to seamlessly fuse over-driven guitar licks and soaring melodies to the heavy bass grooves laid down by Marc Brownstein (Disco Biscuits). This interplay is showcased on tracks like Pow Wow. However in my opinion, it is drummer, KJ Sawka (Pendulum), and keyboardist Aron Magner that make up the core sound of Conspirator.

Sawka’s relentless drum tracks provide a driving, hypnotic base upon which Aron Magner adds rhythmic texture and electronic flourishes. The sum of all the parts can take on different incarnations, from filthy dance hall dub tracks to polished trance beats, but they all share a common theme of heavy electronica infused with dubstep elements. Those in the EDM scene will no doubt be delighted by Conspirator’s current trajectory, while those hoping for a glimpse of the Disco Biscuits may just have to wait for Camp Bisco.

While the meat of the Lancaster set was was rooted in dark, dirty grooves with crescendos of melodic relief, there were plenty of straight high energy dance tracks played as well. I fully enjoyed Proper Education, an irresistibly dance-able spin on the Pink Floyd classic Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2. After listening to Unleashed and attending the Lancaster show, it’s apparent Conspirator is locked in and loving every minute of it. The always affable Marc Brownstein took a moment to give a Central PA shout out: “Horses and buggies and shoo fly pies! It’s awesome here!”

I feel the same way, guys. Thanks for coming!

Bloggy Goodness: AV Club Undercover 2013

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of AV Club’s Undercover series. Launched back in 2010, they’ve gotten an impressive array of indie-rock bands to come into their Chicago office and tackle songs from the likes of Wilco to Sufjan Stevens to Kenny Loggins to Adele. The pop culture site recently polled its readers to help formulate a new list of 25 tunes for an upcoming edition, offering up 68 song choices broken into categories like Ladies of the ’80s, Whistling Songs and We Used2 Like U (pre-1985 U2). Earlier this week, the site revealed the results with the likes of Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start The Fire, Tom Jones’ What’s New Pussycat and Third Eye Blind’s Semi-Charmed Life all making the cut. This year’s edition will kick off on March 19, and will take two breaks, one for a some baseball songs and another to celebrate summer.

If we were to make one request, we’d love to see Phish be invited to come so they could tackle Sleater-Kinney’s You’re No Rock N’ Roll Fun, as a way to say thanks to Carrie Brownstein for her embracing the band’s music a few years back. Here’s the full list of what to expect…

Heart, “Barracuda” / Billy Ocean, “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car” / Backstreet Boys, “I Want It That Way” / Blackstreet, “No Diggity”/ Paul Simon, “Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard” / Billy Joel, “We Didn’t Start The Fire” / Talking Heads, “Psycho Killer” / Faces, “Ooh La La”/ Cheap Trick, “Surrender” / The Supremes, “Come See About Me” / Tom Jones, “What’s New Pussycat?” / U2, “New Year’s Day” / Third Eye Blind, “Semi-Charmed Life” / Rollins Band, “Low Self Opinion” / New Radicals, “You Get What You Give” / Frank Ocean, “Thinkin Bout You” / INXS, “Need You Tonight” / Nine Inch Nails, “Down In It” / Sleater-Kinney, “You’re No Rock N’ Roll Fun” / Dinosaur Jr., “Not You Again” / Weezer, “Undone—The Sweater Song” / Modest Mouse, “Third Planet” / Eddie Money, “Shakin” / Robyn, “Dancing On My Own” / Radiohead, “Just”

As always, we’ve got fresh linkage for you to enjoy…

Finally, over the last few years, The Flaming Lips have taken to recording covers of full albums. The group put their indelible spin on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon and King Crimson’s In The Court Of The Crimson King. Up next for the Oklahoma City-based band will be the 1989 self-titled debut from The Stone Roses, a band who dumbfounded many when they were announced as one of this year’s Coachella headliners. According to a series of Tweets from the Lips front man Wayne Coyne, the band has invited a number of their friends to join them in the studio to help out on the project, including Star Death and White Dwarf, HOTT MT, New Fumes and Depth & Current.

Earlier this week tickets for Dave Grohl and the Sound City Players’ lone New York City gig sold out with a quickness. The show will take place at the Hammerstein Ballroom on February 13th and while in town Grohl will make a pair of television appearances in support of his directorial debut.

Grohl and the Sound City Players, along with Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, will make their network television debut on the February 14th episode of The Late Show with David Letterman. Letterman has never hid his love for Grohl’s music even recruiting the Foo Fighters to play Everlong on his first show back after heart surgery, referring to it as “my favorite band playing my favorite song.”

Dave will also visit The Colbert Report on February 13th to discuss Sound City.

Cover Alert: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals – House of the Rising Sun (Traditional)

HT faves Grace Potter and the Nocturnals played before a capacity crowd at The Egg in Albany, New York on Wednesday night. Towards the end of the show, Potter and a stripped down version of her band moved to the front of the stage for a few unplugged tunes that included the GP&N debut of House of the Rising Sun.

The traditional song dates back centuries before The Animals made an interpretation of House of the Rising Sun a hit in 1964. Potter and the Nocturnals used House of the Rising Sun as an intro to Gumbo Moon back in 2006, but as far as we can tell this was the group’s first full version of the tune. We dig the haunting arrangement and Grace’s powerful vocals and thought you might as well…

Video: Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside – Party Kids

Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside isn’t the typical band that we’ve come to identify with the Pacific Northwest town of Portland, Oregon over the last half-a-dozen or so years. They don’t wear flannel or sing in lush group harmonies or play oddball acoustic instruments. Instead, the group plays a bawdy brand of rock that is heavily influenced by jazz standards, vintage blues and 1950′s rockabilly, with a front woman who sounds as if she stepped straight out of that golden era of rock n’ roll. On February 19, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside will release their third studio effort Untamed Beast via Partisan Records and have dropped the music video for the record’s lead single Party Kids.

Shot in their hometown at the Landmark Saloon, the clip features Ford as a bartender, who has to deal with some unruly patrons by using some brute force. Let’s check it out…

Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside will head out with HT faves Thao & The Get Down Stay Down for a lengthy North American tour that kicks off  on March 6, with a gig in Vancouver.
