Open Letter To The Allman Brothers Band Recording Company: It’s Been Six Years, Please Put Out More Live Archival Releases

Early this morning we came across a press release with a headline that reeled us right in: “Allman Brothers Band to Release Two Vintage Recordings.” We’ve been waiting since 2007 for the band to put out a live recording featuring one of the hundreds of gigs they played between 1969 and 1976, so we couldn’t contain our excitement. Unfortunately, after reading the first few paragraphs it became clear that the Allmans were just re-releasing two shows they put out in 2004 and 2005 respectively – Macon, GA 2/11/72 and Nassau Coliseum 5/1/73.

Now, don’t get us wrong – these two performances are stellar and if you don’t own ‘em, you should grab ‘em when they come back out. But why re-release shows you’ve already released? And why doesn’t the press release mentioned they are re-releases?

There’s an interesting bit in the press release that contains some news that was new to us:

n 2011, the band joined forces with Entertainment One Music to market two signature band-owned labels: PEACH RECORDS for the sales of its previous Sanctuary label releases and new live recordings of the current band as well as the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND RECORDING COMPANY for the release of archival recordings featuring the late DUANE ALLMAN and BERRY OAKLEY.

Two years ago the members of the band and the estates of Duane and Berry formed a company with the sole purpose of putting out archival recordings, yet all this time later ABB fans are still waiting. It can’t be easy to deal with family members of your late band mates and I’m sure getting Dickey Betts to sign off on Allmans’ music must be a pain, but there’s money to be made and fans to be pleased.

For the five years between 2002 and 2007, the Allmans put out six AMAZING live archival releases. Since that time there’s been nothing.  Let’s hope that changes sooner rather than later.

In Case You Forgot Why Ween Was So Awesome

Less than a year after Gene Ween unceremoniously brought Ween’s career to an end (for now), we still can’t believe the “Purveyors of Brown” are done. Not only was every show a blast, but they brought humor and a dose of weirdness to our musical world that won’t even be replaced. This morning, with the help of Chris B., we came across a clip of Ween’s first visit to Late Night with Conan O’Brien that shows both of those elements and we just had to share it with our readers.

For their visit to Conan on January 18th, 1995 Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman dressed the role of an Arabic singer to lead the band through the Chocolate and Cheese classic I Can’t Put My Finger On It. Not only that, Gener and Deaner brought out a belly dancer to accompany them as well as drummer Claude Coleman, Jr. and bassist Andrew Weiss for the surreal performance. Check this shit out…

Ween – I Can’t Put My Finger On It (Live on Conan)

And here’s the deliciously brown video Ween created for the tune…

Full Show Friday: Pro-Shot The Police – Conspiracy of Hope

In 1986 Amnesty International executive director of U.S. operations Jack Healey came up with the idea of enlisting some of the organization’s many musician friends for a mini-tour to raise awareness of human rights. With that the A Conspiracy of Hope tour was born. The tour consisted of six shows in or near the biggest U.S. cities with the grand finale planned for Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Healey took a chance when he reached out to fervent Amnesty International supporter Sting to put the recently broken up The Police back together for the tour and surprisingly Stingo obliged.

For the Giants Stadium finale, the bill included some of the biggest names in music such as Miles Davis, U2, Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell and Carlos Santana. The Police headlined the show, which was broadcast on MTV, and it turned out to be the trio’s last performance together until their 2003 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Sting, Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland, keyboardist Kenny Kirkland and vocalists Janice Pendarvis and Dolette McDonald played one song off each of their albums except Synchronicity (they played two off that one) as well as a cover of the fitting I Shall Be Released which featured all of the evening’s performers. Bono guested on Invisible Sun after which the members of The Police ceremoniously passed off their instruments to the members of U2 in a symbolic passing of the torch.

Thanks to its broadcast on MTV, we can watch The Police’s set from A Conspiracy of Hope…

Mike Gordon Jams With Max Creek @ Higher Ground

Fresh off their appearance at Jungle Jam in warm and sunny Costa Rica, Max Creek returned to Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vermont for the first time in nearly seven years last night. The group welcomed two of guitarist Scott Murawski’s band mates from Mike Gordon’s solo band to sit in at various points including the Phish bassist himself and keyboardist Tom Cleary during the frigid night in Vermont.

Gordon, who sat in with Max Creek at their last Higher Ground show which was a “trial gig” for Murawski’s new-at-the-time Languedoc guitar, emerged to lend a hand on the original Wild Side and a cover of Stay With Me by The Faces complete with Sugar Shack teases. Cactus has long been a fan of Max Creek. Phish covered the band’s Back Porch Boogie in their early days and teamed up with Max Creek for a concert at UVM’s Patrick Gym in 1989. According to Phish.net, Gordon has sat in with Max Creek over a dozen times. Cleary opened the second set with Connecticut-based rock band on Cruel World and stuck around for a few tunes.

UPDATE: Reader Sam Berenson was on hand at Higher Ground last night and has shared a batch of photos he snapped off when Mike was on stage…

The first round of West Coast Rambles at Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads venue in San Rafael, Calif. continued last night where once again God Street Wine kicked off the show with an opening set before members of the band filled out Lesh’s lineup for two additional sets.

GSW started things off with oldies but goodies God Street and Light My Candles before tackling Wall from their 1997 self-titled album. From there, the jamband treated fans to three classics from their mid ’90s hey day: The Ballroom, Epiphany and Bring Back The News. For the set-closing combo of Hey Joe > Get On The Train, the band welcomed guests Jeff Chimenti on keys and John Kadlecik on guitar.

Phil Lesh closed the show with two sets that saw GSW’s Tom “Tomo” Osander on drums and contributions from guitarists Aaron Maxwell and Lo Faber as well as the bassist’s Furthur band mates Chimenti and Kadlecik. Faber handled vocals on He’s Gone, Simple Twist of Fate, Casey Jones and Hey Pocky Way while the Maxwell-led numbers included It Must’ve Been The Roses. Maxwell and Faber teamed up to sing the Phil Lesh debut of Late In The Evening by Paul Simon. The ensemble finished the Help > Slip > Frank’s trio they started the previous evening when they opened the second set with Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower. They also used the final set of the night to split Scarlet Begonias and Fire On The Mountain by working the aforementioned Paul Simon cover, The Wheel, Uncle John’s Band and The Other One in between Scarlet and Fire.

Here’s the setlist from last night at Terrapin Crossroads…

God Street Wine Set: God Street, Light My Candles, Wall, The Ballroom > Epiphany > Bring Back The News, Hey Joe* > Get On The Train*

* – w/ John Kadlecik and Jeff Chimenti

Trey Anastasio @ The Capitol Theatre – Port Chester, NY: January 23

Words and Photos: Andrew Blackstein

Eighty-eight days after originally scheduled, Trey Anastasio finally took The Capitol Theatre stage on Wednesday night in Port Chester, New York. The show was set to take place on October 28th, 2012 when it was postponed with Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the region. The Phish front man gave the capacity crowd a peek inside his head when he bantered about his state of mind in the hours before the decision was made to postpone the show. Trey told the crowd that he tried to convince those around him that his band could “squeeze” the show in before Sandy came ashore.

[All Photos by Andrew Blackstein]

It was a chatty night for Anastasio as he also introduced his friend Mary, who was in the audience, following an interesting acoustic(ish) take on Heavy Things in the encore. The guitarist referred to the song’s lyrics when he added that “she was a friend, until she borrowed everything thing he owned.” Anastasio then mentioned that Vanessa from Heavy Things’ lyrics was not at the venue on this night but was indeed a “real person” too before concluding with “we’re all real people!”

Doors were opened earlier than the published time on the tickets as venue staff and local police were concerned that fans would be too cold in the record low temperatures outside. It was the first of many accommodating decisions made by The Capitol Theatre staff. Inside and ready for a party, Trey Anastasio and his solo band took the stage at 8:20 with a loud, hard-hitting Cayman Review. The irony of The Cayman Islands’ warm tropic temperatures versus New York’s current cold spell that had the area around the venue in its grip was not lost on the band or the fans. Alive Again and Pigtail were both played well and sounded close to the studio versions.

A cover of Toots and the Maytals’ Sweet & Dandy gave Trey a chance to hop around to the reggae beat while he checked out fans dancing around the beautiful renovated theater. Grins from ear to ear continued as the frantic Land Of Nod showed off the band’s strong points. Perfectly struck bass notes from Tony Markellis, tight snare snaps from Russ Lawton and chilling clav work from Ray Paczkowski were the backbone to Trey’s telling lyrical content that arrives at the end of the song: “I was asleep for so long.” Dark & Down also seemed to provide a glimpse into the proverbial hurricane that was the guitarist’s life after Phish broke up in 2004.

Set Two started with a funky Sand that featured multiple layers of delay loops from Trey and a tightly played horn arrangement. Sand has been one of Trey’s favorite songs to play as of late and it showed in this version. The vibe inside was now pretty loose and colorful as the Port Chester fans started spreading their elbows and getting down to Simple Twist Up Dave. Lights projected on the Capitol Theater ceiling had Trey and fans staring off into the abyss. The back half of the second set included well executed versions of Let Me Lie, Goodbye Head and Architect. It was nice to observe music fans enjoying music as The Cap crowd was appropriately quiet and attentive during these slower tunes.

Clint Eastwood slammed home one of the most attractive parts of TAB – Jennifer Hartswick’s voice! Boy, did she make that song sound great. Hitting notes that not many could hit, Jen’s singing inspires those around her. Push On Till The Day closed the set in fine form. The end jam saw Trey running around his small carpet in tight circles like a possessed madman. Anastasio decided that it was the right time to dust off Flock Of Words when the band returned for what would be a three-song encore. For those who bask in great lyrics see this tune. Led by Trey with backup from Jen, Flock Of Words showed off how beautiful and insightful music can be. All in all, night one of this mid week two-night stand at the Capitol proved to be a wonderful event.

Notes: This was the rescheduled date from the show that had been postponed due to Hurricane Sandy on October 28, 2012. This show was webcast via LivePhish.com. “Alive Again” contained a “Manteca” tease. “Sweet and Dandy” was performed at the request of someone in the front row. “Streets of Cairo” was teased before “Sand.” “Flock of Words” and “Heavy Things” featured Trey on acoustic guitar. Trey acknowledged Mary from the “Heavy Things” lyric, who was in the crowd that evening and pointed out that Vanessa was a real person too, saying “We’re all real people!”

Bob Weir Sits In With Tim Flannery & Lunatic Fringe @ Sweetwater

This weekend San Francisco Giants third base coach Tim Flannery has been playing a series of four concerts in the Bay Area with his band Lunatic Fringe to help raise funds for Bryan Stow. Stow was the victim of a brutal attack at Dodgers Stadium at a game between his beloved Giants and the Dodgers in 2011 just because he didn’t root for the home team. Last night Flannery’s four-night swing landed him at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, Calif. where Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist (and one of the venue’s owners) Bob Weir joined him and Lunatic Fringe for five songs.

Weir has a long history with Flannery as they have performed together a number of times including a handful of appearances at AT&T Park singing the National Anthem before Giants games. Bobby and Phil Lesh even nominated Flannery for Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year Award to honor Tim’s relentless work raising money for Stow’s family. The guitarist emerged in the first set to sit in with Lunatic Fringe on a four-song string of Catfish John, Peggy-O, Friend of the Devil and The Weight. Weir returned in set two to help out on Loser.  Flannery, his band and Bobby were surrounded by the World Championship trophies the Giants won in 2010 and 2012 leading to a “Let’s Go Giants!” chant.

The benefit shows continue tonight at the Uptown Theatre in Napa, Calif.

I’ve seen a number of amazing performances thus far in 2013, but last night’s Freaks Ball XIII finale at Brooklyn Bowl featuring the debut of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead takes the cake as the best one yet. Russo and Scott Metzger, Tom Hamilton, Marco Benevento and Dave Dreiwitz offered a powerful, hard-nosed interpretation of the Grateful Dead’s music over two sets at the sold out venue.

We’ll have a full report on what was the most incredible Dead-related show I’ve experienced soon, but we wanted to share a taste of it and the setlist. Check out a few minutes of psychedelic blues as Almost Dead tackled Viola Lee Blues to end the second set last night…

God Street Wine Closes Out First Rambles of 2013 With Phil Lesh and Friends at Terrapin Crossroads

Four years ago today we launched our recurring God Street Wednesdays column with the title of “Bring Back God Street Wine” begging for the band’s return after ten years of retirement. It’s been unbelievable that since the launch of the column the original members of the group have played a total of seventeen shows and performed with the likes of Leo Nocentelli, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh. The last of these performances took place last night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, Calif. where GSW and Phil and Friends finished a three-night stand of West Coast Rambles.

As had been the case on previous nights, God Street Wine opened with a short set before Lesh teamed up with members of GSW, John Kadlecik and Jeff Chimenti for an additional two sets. God Street brought out Kadlecik for Fortress of Solitude during their seven-song set. Lesh, Chimenti, Kadlecik and GSW’s Tom Osander, Aaron Maxwell, Jason Crosby and Lo Faber – as well as Jon Bevo on occasion – stuck to classics from the Dead’s repertoire for the majority of the show with a few exceptions. In the second set, the ensemble covered Won’t Get Fooled Again by The Who which GSW covered last summer. For the encore, the group dusted off I Am The Walrus which Phil performed with The “Q” last April.

We’ve compiled a few tracks from last night for your streaming pleasure. Thanks to Quinfolk of the PhilZone community for the captures. Check out Epilog from GSW’s opening set, Aaron Maxwell singing Sugaree and Lo Faber leading I Am The Walrus…

Jon Fishman Sits In With The Candles @ D.C. Benefit

HT reader Joshua Miller has shared his account of yesterday’s Long May You Run benefit concert.

As previously reported, Washington D.C. music fans were treated to a rare afternoon show on Saturday at the Hamilton Theater featuring special guest Phish drummer Jon Fishman.

[All Photos via @TheCandlesMusic]

Dubbed “Long May You Run,” the concert featured performances by The Ana Egge Band, Anne McCue, The Doughboys and Jason Roberts (The Candles / Norah Jones Band). The event was organized to benefit runner and pedestrian safety, and honored Karen Dubin, a dedicated jogger who was struck and killed in April 2011 when a driver left the roadway. Proceeds went to the Road Runners Club of America to raise awareness for increased runner and pedestrian safety. You can donate HERE.

Honoring their cousin Dubin, Fishman sat in with Jason Roberts and his Candles bandmates for the second half of their show-closing set. With Fishman sitting center stage, fans were treated to an energetic cover of Neil Young’s Come on Baby Let’s Go Downtown followed by a jammed-out performance of The Band’s King Harvest that smoothly segued into a rocking set closer of the Grateful Dead’s Deal. Fishman and The Candles were joined by other artists who had performed earlier in the afternoon for a show-ending encore, an event-appropriate and heart-felt rendition of Neil Young’s Long May You Run.

Although this was his first show playing with his cousin Fishman, it wasn’t the first time Roberts has played with a member of Phish: He also played with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, as well as Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, at Move Me Brightly, Jerry Garcia’s 70th birthday party concert. And on October 26, 1996, Phish frontman Trey Anastasio dedicated Phish’s second-set closing Antelope to Roberts, then 14, for winning a guitar competition.
