HT faves Perpetual Groove have their mojo back as we reach the end of the group’s first full year with original keyboardist Matt McDonald back in the fold. McDonald, guitarist Brock Butler, bassist Adam Perry and drummer Albert Suttle will finish 2012 with a three-night New Year’s Run and are looking towards 2013 with the announcement of their “Ice Princess #9 Winter Strain 2.013” tour.

The quartet will hit some of their favorite venues in the southeast between January 17th and February 23rd. They will also add special acoustic shows in which PGroove will offer stripped down versions of their material. For a taste of what you can expect at these unplugged performances, the group has shared a gorgeous take on one of the best songs in their catalog – Only Always. When someone tells you jambands can’t write songs, play this for them and tell them to save it. Take a look…

Transaction Report: Craig Myers Leaves Rubblebucket To Focus on Barika / John Neff Quits Drive-By Truckers

0

It’s late in the year for lineup changes, but that hasn’t stopped two musicians from leaving the bands for which they’re best known. Percussionist Craig Myers has left Rubblebucket, while multi-instrumentalist John Neff has unexpectedly quit the Drive-By Truckers.

Myers has left the employ of HT faves Rubblebucket to focus on his own band – Barika, according to a report by Brent Hallenbeck of the Burlington Free-Press. After more than five years in Rubblebucket, when on the road “Myers missed the band that he leads back home in Burlington, the West African-inspired Barika.” According to Hallenbeck, Myers’ last gig with Rubblebucket took place on September 6th. Rubblebucket begins a two-night stand at Higher Ground on Sunday while Barika plays Nectar’s on Saturday.

In a surprise move, pedal steel/guitarist John Neff announced his departure from Drive-By Truckers in a terse statement on his Facebook page, “Today I quit the Drive-by Truckers. Thanks for all the friendships. Let’s keep in touch” as reported by Jambands.com. The Truckers kick off a three-night New Year’s run at Washington D.C.’s 9:30 Club in just two days.

UPDATE: Paterson Hood of the Truckers has issued a statement

Y’ALL:

As I guess most of you have heard or read by now, John Neff has left Drive-By Truckers. Effective immediately.

I was actually first informed by my sister who was up earlier than me and read it on Facebook. In all fairness, he did send me an email saying he was quitting his ”job” and wouldn’t be going with us to DC this weekend a few minutes before he posted it, but I was attempting to sleep in.

Kind of a sad way to end a sixteen year relationship, but we’ve all known that things have been strained on that front for over a year now.

He made no mention of future plans, a player as fine as Neff will have no trouble ever finding work. He would be an asset to whatever situation he applied himself to. We certainly appreciate the incredible work he’s done with us and as I said, we wish him nothing but the absolute best.

DBT will continue onward, as we always do.

There are no plans to try to replace John. I’ve never considered anyone ever to be replaceable in this band. We have constantly changed and morphed and this will be no exception. We always say, play every show like it’s your last, it could be.

But not right now.

DBT is making definite plans towards starting a new album in the spring and I’m always excited about recording new songs and seeing where that leads the band.

This band has been a big part of my life for nearly 20 years. It’s never been a job to me and I’d rather quit and move on than have it ever be that. We’re a big, sometimes dysfunctional family, but we’ve always drawn strength from each other and the big glorious noise we make. I always try to treat every new year as a new beginning and this will certainly apply this weekend.

Onward and forward and may everyone have a safe and prosperous 2013.

See you at The Rock Show.

Yours Truly,

Patterson Hood

Unofficial 31 Days of Dead – 2012 Edition: Day 28

December 28

It Hurts Me Too / Beat It On Down The Line (Hidden Track) both tracks with guest performer, Duane Allman on slide guitar
4/26/71 Fillmore East, New York, NY

Inviting guest performers to play with the Grateful Dead was always a crap shoot. Once in a while the gamble paid off and on a few very rare occasions there was magic. One fine example is the Dead’s collaborations with the Allman Brothers. For a great discussion on this pairing see http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2009/08/allmans-dead.html.

Today’s selection and hidden track feature the late Duane Allman lending his soulful slide guitar to a pair of classic cover songs during the Dead’s historic final stand at the Fillmore East in New York City. These tracks are outtakes from the Grateful Dead’s official release, Ladies And Gentlemen, The Grateful Dead. I suppose the powers-that-be could not work out a suitable arrangement that would have enabled these tracks to appear on what is otherwise an outstanding document of that four-night run.

The folks over at Wolfgang’s Vault did a nice write-up of this so I will defer to them:

The next tune is a cover of Elmore James’, ‘It Hurts Me Too.’ This is a classic performance and here Duane is in his element, wailing the blues. Everything jells here and the combination of Pigpen’s bluesy vocal and harp delivery, combined with Allman and Garcia both playing slide guitar, is irresistible. Allman also adds his distinctive signature and a sense of wild abandon to “Beat It On Down The Line,” an electrified jugband tune from the Dead’s 1967 debut album. It’s a shame they didn’t get the chance to stretch out and seriously improvise while Allman was onstage, but what is here is highly enjoyable and documents this historic meeting.

Allman Brothers Band March Madness @ Beacon Theatre 2013

0
0

As the years pass and the members of the Allman Brothers Band get older, you can’t take the group’s annual March Madness run at the Beacon Theatre for granted. Therefore, we were happy and relieved to see the Allmans will once again take up residency at the legendary venue on Manhattan’s Upper West Side this March for what appears to be a ten-night stand.

A page on American Express’s Entertainment Access website offers fans the opportunity to purchase tickets to the shows before the general public. According to the page, the Allmans will play the Beacon on March 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 15 and 16. The AmEx presale will start on January 4th at Noon ET and runs through the 10th, so expect tickets to go on sale to the general public shortly after that. We’ll let you know when the band reveals more details about the run.

My Morning Jacket Debuts Instrumental Jam Octoplasm @ The Capitol Theatre: Night One Setlist

0

In April of 2011 My Morning Jacket released an instrumental track called Octoplasm through their Self-Hypnosis series that caught our attention for its jammy attributes. We referred to Octoplasm as “a noodle-heavy jam that sounds like it could segue into Dark Star or China Cat Sunflower at any point within the six-minute track.” Ever since MMJ dropped the studio version, we’ve been waiting for them to debut the live edition. That finally happened last night at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York where My Morning Jacket kicked off their New Year’s Run.

Coming into the run, MMJ promised they wouldn’t repeat anything during the three shows at The Cap. Jim James and Co. dug deep for the first performance, treating fans to such rarities as Tyrone, Strangulation, Cobra and the Octoplasm debut. We came across a clip that shows off the awesomeness that is Octoplasm, so watch it right after Evelyn Is Not Real. Octoplasm starts at the 2:50 mark…

My Morning Jacket – Evelyn Is Not Real > Octoplasm

And here’s a look at the complete setlist from last night’s show…

There’s a must-see encore episode of Austin City Limits this weekend as pioneering noise-rockers Sonic Youth split the show with blues-rock duo The Black Keys. “The Black Keys are headlining festivals and arenas these days, but this performance – one of the last shows in the original, historic Austin City Limits studio – captures the essence of what makes their music resonate with so many millions of new fans,” says executive producer Terry Lickona in a statement. “Little did they know, but the 300 people in the studio were witnessing history, and it’s great to be able to re-live that day again!” Add to that a look at Sonic Youth in action from just before they began their current “indefinate hiatus.”

HT Staff’s Top 25 Albums Of 2012: #5 – #1

0
0

All week long we’ve been counting down our staff’s picks for the best albums of 2012. Today, on one of the last workdays of the year, we reveal the top of our list.

When Hidden Track was started in 2006 there were plenty of sites dedicated to indie rock and a slew of sites devoted to improvisational and classic rock bands, but few blogs (and bands for that matter) bridged the gap between the forms. That’s where we came in and five years later the results of our list shows that’s still where our staff’s interests lie.

Thanks for following along all week. We now present our Top 5 Albums of 2012…

5) Dr. JohnLocked Down

Key Tracks: Locked Down, Ice Age, Eleggua… aw heck, they’re all amazing.

Sounds Like: Dan Auerbach as Marty McFly, Dr John as Marvin Berry; a time-traveling Delorean and one funky-as-hell Enchantment Under the Sea dance.

The Skinny: If you had a time machine, would you go back to save the world from some certain evil? Would you ensure yourself riches beyond your wildest imagination? Or would you use it to get down to history’s greatest musicians in their prime? Dan Auerbach may very well have a time machine because the Dr. John he’s produced on Locked Down is a revelation of past greatness in the here and now. The album is a swampy, dark Dr. John voodoo funk with Auerbach’s greasy fingerprints all over it, an embarrassment of musical riches, each track its own adventure. As throwback as it sounds, what’s remarkable is how modern and relevant it feels – time machine or not, Dr John & Dan Auerbach have delivered an album for the ages.

- Aaron Stein

4) Father John MistyFear Fun

Key Tracks: I’m Writing A Novel, Only Son Of A Ladiesman, Well You Can Do It Without Me

Sounds Like: Laurel Canyon’s psychedelic shaman troubadour

The Skinny: In 2011, J. Tillman did something that may have equaled career suicide for many, by abdicating his spot behind the drumkit for the Fleet Foxes in order to pursue his musical vision full-time. Reborn as Father John Misty, the singer-songwriter proved he didn’t belong in the gloominess of the Pacific Northwest, instead he was meant to embrace the sunshine and weirdness of Los Angeles, offering up a brilliant debut of acid-drenched folk-rock. Produced by Jonathan Wilson, the record layers Tillman’s deep baritone through a dark haze of lush harmonies, drawing influence from Harry Nilsson to Gram Parsons to John Lennon.

- Jeffrey Greenblatt

3) Alabama ShakesBoys & Girls

Key Tracks: Hold On, I Ain’t The Same, Heartbreaker

Sounds Like: The musical love child of Janis Joplin with Big Brother and Otis Redding and the Bar Kays

The Skinny: It’s hard to remember a time before the Alabama Shakes burst into the music world with a level of buzz unseen since Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. However, unlike many other buzz bands, the Shakes gained their reputation based on their sound and not their looks. Their debut album is an all-killer, no-filler affair filled with 11 potent tracks. Save the overdubs and studio wizardry for Radiohead, the raw sound of Boys & Girls is the perfect document to introduce the world to Alabama Shakes’ soul-stirring blues-rock.

- Scott Bernstein

2) Tame ImpalaLonerism

Key Tracks: Apocalypse Dreams, Feels Like We Only Go Backwards, Elephant

Sounds Like: Early Pink Floyd mixed with a small dose of Australian pop…on a deserted island in space.

The Skinny: This impressive sophomore album from Tame Impala is able to nimbly jump from deep psychedelic grooves that remind the listener of early Pink Floyd to fresh dream-pop melodies without anything sounding out of place or trite. Rife with the same melancholy and somber themes of isolation and despair as Innerspeaker (the band’s first album), Lonerism is simultaneously bright and airy. With soaring guitar work, commanding bass lines, brilliant songwriting and a great trippy feel, this is a great album to listen to straight through.

- Parker Harrington

1) Jack WhiteBlunderbuss

Key Tracks: Love Interruption, Missing Pieces, Trash Tongue Talker

Sounds Like: Others sound like Jack White, not vice versa.

The Skinny: Jack White left behind his ex-wife/sister/nanny/test tube pod clone as well as his many other don’t-call-them-side-projects and released Blunderbuss, his first accredited solo album. After spending a decade honing a style that relies greatly on fuzzy, bottom-heavy blues-guitar riffs, deep-toned organ fills and hysterically manic white-boy pseudo-rapping, White stayed true to the vital qualities that make him one of rock’s most intriguing personalities. A glibly verbose font of hipster jive, White’s facility with words allows him to weave complex literary tapestries with strikingly simple, oftentimes quite sweet, expressions. When he proclaims that he wants love to change his friends to enemies on Love Interruption, it’s unclear whether White’s confessing a dark secret or engaging in ironic detachment. At his core though, White is a guitar player and a tremendous one at that. Reinventing blues and rock guitar while remaining respectfully reverent, White continues to find creative ways to move the art forward like the Morse code feedback solo from Weep Themselves To Sleep, which emerges so subtlety that you lose track of White’s prolific inventiveness.

Towards the end of Pearl Jam’s marathon set at Prague’s 02 Arena on July 2, 2012; the group’s front man Eddie Vedder told the Czech audience they were one of the best crowds of the tour “no bullshit.” Vedder and the band returned the favor by delivering a relentless performance that focused on their harder-edged material.

A group of fans who go by the name “Blink Eye Productions” created an incredible document of the show thanks to their hi-def camera and the use of a crystal-clear soundtrack. Check it out…

Alligator Jam
6/6/70 Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA

Coming out of the tribal rhythm of Drums, this swampy Alligator jam is cut from the same cloth as the infamous version performed a year later at the closing of the Fillmore East (4/29/71).  Not surprisingly, it also contains elements of The Other One from Harpur College the month prior. While not quite reaching the same amazing heights of either, it is still some outrageously brilliant GD music that is not to be missed.

Disco Biscuits @ Best Buy Theater, December 27

Photos and Words: Andrew Scott Blackstein

The Disco Biscuits started their five-night New York City run in fine form on Wednesday night by ending the opening show with a huge Save The Robots> Crickets> Save The Robots. Fans were buzzing about how tight they sounded (especially drummer Allen Aucoin). Friday’s second gig of the run, saw the Philadelphia-based band revive The Bridge as the show opened with a welcomed treat. As the crowd worked its way into the Best Buy Theater, Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig led his band mates through an energetic Vassillios that showed off his classical guitar skills. Having moved into a thunderous Bombs, notes of other songs could be heard before bassist Marc Brownstein slammed into Run Like Hell.

[All Photos by Andrew Scott Blackstein]

By this point it was evident to most that the Biscuits were not only playing well, but were far outdoing their recent vacation down to Mexico for Mayan Holidaze. As Gutwillig played note after note in what seemed like a ferocious pace, the NYC fans were treated to an above average first set. The sequence of the night, an extraordinary Astronaut> Helicopters > Astronaut segment was a true, 30-minute improvisational masterpiece. If this show was any indicator of what’s to come, fans better get their popcorn for the final shows of the run.

12/27/12

Set One: The Bridge, Vasillios > Bombs > Run Like Hell * > Hot Air Balloon** (end)

Set Two: Astronaut (sita jam) > Helicopters* > (sita) Astronaut > Shelby Rose > The City > Shelby Rose, I Remember When, Morph Dusseldorf

Encore: Home Again

My Morning Jacket Cover Elton John and The Band and Continue Mining Repertoire For Gold at Night Two of Capitol Theatre Run

0

My Morning Jacket returned to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York last night for the second of three shows that kick off their NYE Run. The band promised no repeats throughout the three-show run which has meant the addition of lesser-played material to each setlist.

Fan-favorites Dancefloors, The Bear and It Beats 4 U each got the call on Night Two, while guitarist Carl Bromel led the band through Carried Away from his solo album for only the third time this year. MMJ performed two of the best covers in their repertoire as part of the main set – Elton John’s Rocket Man and It Makes No Difference by The Band. After two performances of the rare Old September Blues during the month it references earlier this year, My Morning Jacket worked it into last night’s set. Antibalas opened the show and the Afrobeat band’s horn section returned during MMJ’s set for Dondante.

Here’s the setlist from My Morning Jacket at The Capitol Theatre on Dec. 28th…

Unofficial 31 Days of Dead – 2012 Edition: Day 30

December 30

Not Fade Away > Turn On Your Lovelight
9/19/70 Fillmore East, New York, NY

Here is some high-energy Grateful Dead to get us all primed for New Year’s Eve. Before Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad was introduced in the repertoire (that would happen a few weeks following this show), a Not Fade Away > Lovelight combo was somewhat common. This version is probably one of the finest performances of that pairing (5/7/70 from MIT is a strong contender but the abysmal audience recording makes it almost unlistenable).

This version of Not Fade Away is a personal favorite because Garcia slips in two dazzling thematic jams – a few China Cat licks immediately preceded by the most-developed Darkness, Darkness jam ever played (The Youngbloods). The transition back into Not Fade Away is seamless and the screaming finale led by Weir and Pigpen is exceptionally hot.  Without a moment to catch your breath, the band begins the opening notes of Lovelight.

This filthy version of Lovelight has become legendary because Pigpen drops the F-bomb like a dirty sailor. It actually was a pretty radical thing to do at the time and certainly caught Bobby off guard who asks, “Uh Pigpen, did you say fuck?” Seizing the opportunity, Pigpen emphatically responds, “I said FUCK.” This energizes both the band and audience even more, bringing things to a boiling point. The thermonuclear finale is one for the ages. Following the last crashing note Pigpen drops a huge Hiroshima F-bomb on the already frenzied audience leaving them in a prurient mushroom cloud of sweaty pheromones.

Appropriately enough, the post-show house music is Get Together (The Youngbloods, again) which is a nod to both the aforementioned Darkness jam during NFA and Pigpen’s salacious rap during Lovelight.  Just as you are relaxing with a post-intercourse cigarette Phil brings Pigpen out for a final “encore” so that he can ask, “Why don’t you guys go home and fuck somebody?”

Just another evening of magic at the Fillmore East with the Good Ol’ Grateful Dead. Bring on NYE.

Phish MSG NYE Run 2012 – Setlist and Skinny: Night Three

December 30th has also been a special day for Phish as they’ve delivered a number of memorable gigs on this night. Tonight, Phish continued their four-night NYE Run at Madison Square Garden.

The penultimate show of 2012 started off with a batch of staples that led into only the 16th version of Blues Image’s one-hit wonder Ride Captain Ride ever. Ocelot continues to win over Phish fans thanks to its swampy jam section. Ya Mar featured Mike Gordon taking a bass solo in lieu of a guitar solo. Horn has been a tune the quartet has struggled with, but not on this night – it was nailed. My Friend, My Friend also benefited from a near flawless performance and led into a typically ferocious Run Like An Antelope first set closer.

While the second show of the run didn’t contain much exploration, the same can’t be said about Night Three. Phish opened up Down With Disease in a big way, exploring multiple jam spaces in the near 20-minute version that kicked off the closing stanza. A particularly enthralling segment saw bassist Mike Gordon utilize a synth’d out tone that was so powerful the audience roared when he kicked into it. Guitarist Trey Anastasio followed along for a funky and dirty romp that closed out the Disease and led into Twenty Years Later. Next up was Carini which kept the “darkness” theme going and contained a jam that could’ve easily been played by early Pink Floyd as by Woodsman. This psych-y segment was Phish jamming without a net and was more spacey than melodic. The quartet followed the jam-laden first half of Set Two with straight-forward takes on Backwards Down The Number Line and Julius. A gorgeous, patient Slave To The Traffic Light was a powerful way to end the set of the run thus far. When Phish returned for the encore, they did something they’ve never done before over the last 29 years – they followed Slave with Harry Hood. Two of the more emotional and quintessentially Phish tunes back-to-back. Hood’s jam section was as patient as the powerful Slave, until it came time for the climax. Anastasio played a series of chords to end the tune instead of his usual rapid-fire flurry of notes. Show of Life was tacked on as a bonus second song in the encore slot.

We’ve reached the end of our Unofficial 31 Days of Dead feature. Ed Martin has done a fantastic job of presenting classic tracks from the Grateful Dead’s illustrious history. It’s been an honor to be the new home of this compilation and we’re deeply indebted to Ed for all his hard work in sharing these incredible selections. Also, thanks to Brian Levine for the artwork and for turning us on to Ed’s project.

Truckin’ > The Other One > Morning Dew
12/31/72 Winterland, San Francisco, CA

*BONUS TRACK*
Thanks Bill Graham > Sugar Magnolia
12/31/72 Winterland, San Francisco, CA

Today is the 40th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s amazing performance at Winterland on New Year’s Eve in 1972. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate that milestone than by selecting the “big jam” from that show to ring in 2013.  I also threw in Sugar Magnolia as a bonus track.  It was Bill Graham’s favorite Grateful Dead song and they usually obliged him with it on New Year’s Eve.

I’m taking the day off to pop the champagne cork. Today’s write-up comes courtesy of the Dead Essays blog.  I hope you enjoyed the 2012 edition of the Unofficial 31 Days of Dead.  Happy 2013 all!

Technically this show was the first of ’73, starting at midnight and continuing til around 4 am on January 1! But the second set shows no sign of weariness – if anything, it’s one of the most inspired sets of the month.

A fine long jam comes out of Truckin’, not explosive but full of anticipation as Garcia sounds eager to roam. He starts playing excited Other One runs while the rest of the band is still in Truckin’. They stay in this transition a long time – Garcia won’t let go for the usual drum solo, instead the Other One slowly emerges as Garcia dashes from one new theme to the next, the jam getting more inspired as it goes along. After Lesh finally plays the Other One Intro, the band oozes into a very pretty, drippy jam.

They abruptly pause for a drum break, followed by an aimless Lesh solo – as he goes into a repeating bass riff that would be very common in ’73, the band spins out of this into a fullbore jazz jam. David Crosby has joined them on a twelve-string, giving them a more dense and cluttered sound – he fits right in (he had also played on the 9/10/72 Dark Star), playing chordal backing along with Weir. The jam speeds up, Garcia barreling along at warp speed, the atmosphere electric, more happening than the ear can catch – Godchaux in particular is outstanding throughout this night’s jams, in his element as he drives the band forward. All of a sudden they stop for a very spacey wah-wah interlude, Godchaux’s piano-tinkles and Crosby’s bending chords ringing out loudly. Garcia slides into feedback, Lesh pushing him with loud rumbles, the band jabbing in spikes of fizzling confusion, and they rip into a short but powerful Tiger. Dazed, the band drifts, Garcia’s guitar creaking and rattling as Crosby adds to the mayhem. Somehow out of this, Weir bursts into some chords and it sounds like they’re going into Me & My Uncle – but it turns out to be a new jam. Just as it gets hotter and seems due to explode, Garcia drops out for a while and it’s time for a Weir chordal solo – once Garcia rejoins him, the band drops nearly to silence. Out of some drum taps, suddenly Lesh rumbles into the Other One again, and we’re treated to a very hot entry into the verse.

The biggest surprise of all happens after the verse – instead of an Other One jam, all of a sudden Garcia slows down the band *on a dime* into a superb, sweet instrumental that must be heard to be believed – it’s not at all like the Dead’s other jams in these shows. It almost sounds like they rehearsed it for just this occasion, it’s so tight and evocative. Garcia’s lead is simply fantastic, one of the most transcendent pieces I’ve heard him play. Lifting to an even higher level, this passage ends with Garcia’s violin-like volume-swell solo – Crosby backing him with graceful notes – which slides fantasy-like into a dreamy Morning Dew. Crosby & Weir add a very phased sound to Dew – Garcia’s singing is heartfelt, and he plays a powerful middle solo. The ending jam, growing out of Garcia/Crosby twin leads, is very deliberate and extended with Crosby’s heavy chords and Garcia’s fanning, ending this long jam medley with an emotional bang.

Afterwards, Weir thanks Bill Graham and they play a really excellent Sugar Magnolia for him, the best of the run with an extra-long jam. (Possibly Crosby’s still in there too, playing grungy chords?)

And with that, the Dead bid farewell to 1972. The next month would be a busy one, writing and rehearsing several new songs – and in February, they’d come back to the stage with a smoother, more relaxed style…. But that’s a story for another day.
