0

Lots of musical legends are in New York City this week for tomorrow night’s 12-12-12: The Concert For Sandy Relief at MSG and NBC’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon has snagged two of them for visits. Former Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters will stop by 30 Rock this evening for a chat with Jimmy, while on Thursday Long Island’s own Billy Joel will sit for an interview about performing at the benefit.

Waters has appeared on Late Night multiple times including a performance of In The Flesh with Foo Fighters during the show’s Pink Floyd Week. Both guests are not to expected to perform.

For the past three nights (and for the next five nights) alt-rock pioneers Yo La Tengo have been holding court at Maxwell’s for their annual Hanukkah run in Hoboken. Jesse Jarnow has been keeping those who can’t make it up to date on the setlists via his blog, while our friends at NYCTaper have been sharing amazing matrix recordings of the guest and cover-laden festivities.

On Sunday night YLT revisited their cover of Velvet Underground’s Who Loves The Sun. Check it out as an example of how good the shows (and the NYCTaper recordings) are…

Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah run continues tonight through Saturday at Maxwell’s.

Rising star Jonathan Wilson and his band opened for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Europe this summer leading to Wilson forming a friendship with Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. The pair discussed creating a holiday jam benefit concert and made it happen by booking L.A.’s Troubadour on December 20th for the first annual The Merry Minstrel Musical Circus: A Holiday Gathering & Goodwill Jamathon.

Campbell and Wilson called upon their friends to help out and have lined up an impressive roster to play the inaugural Jamathon. Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist Bob Weir, legendary singer-songwriter Jackson Browne and Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench will all participate in the event. Tickets are currently available through Ticketfly. All proceeds from the benefit concert will go to Little Kids Rock and the Tazzy Animal Rescue Fund. We sure hope recordings and videos surface.

Tour Dates: Thao & The Get Down Stay Down Take To The Road

The last time we heard from Thao & The Get Down Stay Down was back in 2009, when the San Francisco indie act released their kickass sophomore effort Know Better Learn Faster, which masqueraded as quirky, bouncy pop album but was really a break up record at its core. On February 5, Nguyen and a reconstituted version of her band will release their long awaited third studio album We The Common, which was recorded at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone studios and will feature a guest appearance from Joanna Newsom. Nguyen & Co. will head out with Sally Ford & The Sound Outside, for a lengthy North American tour, which kicks off at the Doug Fir Lounge, in Portland, Oregon on March 5, and wraps roughly a month later at the legendary Troubadour in Los Angeles on March 8.

If you’re not into a night with Thao and her quirky brand of indie-pop, then maybe you’ll be interested in one of these recently announced tours…

Rush Finally Did It! Rush, Public Enemy, Heart and Randy Newman Among Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2013

Big news from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has just broken as Rush, Public Enemy, Heart, Donna Summer, Albert King, Quincy Jones, Lou Adler and Randy Newman will be the Rock Hall’s Class of ’13 according to Rolling Stone. In our eyes Rush has been the most glaring oversight from the Rock Hall and we’re extremely excited to see them make it in.

Rush bassist Geddy Lee doesn’t hold any ill will towards the Rock Hall…

“It’s a terrific honor and we’ll show up smiling,” Rush’s singer and bassist, Geddy Lee, tells Rolling Stone. “It made my mom happy, so that’s worth it.” Lee is especially happy for Rush’s army of hardcore fans. “It was a cause they championed,” he says. “I’m very relieved for them and we share this honor with them, for sure.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place in New York City this year. It will be held at the Best Buy Theater on April 18th. You can watch it on HBO May 18th.

Old Umphrey’s McGee Documentary Surfaces on YouTube

0

Early next year Umphrey’s McGee will celebrate their 15th anniversary together as a band, so we were already feeling nostalgic about the group’s early days. Way back in 2001, just three years into UM’s career, Umphreaks Jared Scott and Michael Tanoury put together an hour-long documentary about this band on the rise called “Nachos For Two” that has just surfaced on YouTube.

The film contains interviews with the band members, concert footage and a behind-the-scenes look at the band house. There’s so many wonderful moments included within such as the members of UM working out a tough transition verbally and then pulling it off in concert, Jake Cinninger showing his multi-instrumental prowess and former drummer Mike Mirro talking about not wanting to play bars throughout his 20s. That’s not even mentioning the concert and practice footage including The Fuzz, Last Man Swerving, ’40s Theme and All In Time. While the YouTube clip clearly came from a VHS tape and isn’t the best quality, this is a must-see video for Umphrey’s fans…

The hour-long documentary is followed by 30 minutes of concert footage.

Technology Tuesday: Worst Tech “Things” of 2012

0
0

Week after week, I have tried to highlight products, gadgets, apps, services, hardware or other tech items that I think you will love. Hopefully you have found a few items worthwhile and even checked some out to make your life “easier, better, more enjoyable and just plain more fun” (from the mission statement of the column as articulated in its first week). Unlike most tech blogs that can throw up dozens of posts per week, I have but one. This really forces me to focus on things that I love! No sense wasting space on crappy products or shitty services. Yet my blood often boils with terrible decision making and weak products.

Barring an occasional Twitter rant, I usually keep the editorials and poor product reviews to myself. I figured this would be a good opportunity to highlight the worst tech “things” of 2012 and get it all off my chest so I can focus on all the rest of the good stuff in coming weeks! So bear with me as we look at the Worst of 2012.

And as a friendly reminder: I am always open to suggestions for future columns. My contact info is at the bottom of the column every week and I’d love to hear from you if you have a product or service you really love that would be worth sharing with everyone. I plan on doing a few more tutorials as well in 2013, so if there’s something you’d like to see- also let met know!

Twitter Locking Down

If anyone follows me on Twitter, you know I love the service. It is one of the best things to happen to the web since Google figured out search. However, Twitter faces the very real possibility of becoming another MySpace if they continue down the path that they have been forging in 2012. This week’s Instagram kerfuffle is but the tip of the iceberg. Everyone gets it: Twitter needs to monetize. However, to do it at the expense of the openness and ease with which developers could harness the awesome power of Twitter’s stream is not the right way to go. App.net is gambling that the continued closure of Twitter’s API will push people towards being willing to PAY for a social sharing site. We’ll see what 2013 brings, but if 2012 has been any indication, there are some dark times in the future for Twitter.

Most Android Tablets

Of the dozens (hundreds?) of tablets released with the Android operating system this year – let’s face it: most of them suck. They suck so bad it is absolutely mind-boggling that they could have been given the green light at all. I was recently at a large Best Buy in New York with a dozen plus Android slates for sale. I’d be shocked if any but one or two of them actually sell even one. With terrible touch screens, poor build quality and terrible design aesthetics – why in the world would one drop $200+ for an off brand or lower tier tablet? The lunacy of these products is most stark when comparing against fantastic tablets with unbeatable price points like Google’s Nexus 7 for a paltry $199.

Facebook IPO

Not much to say here- though it wasn’t a failure for many: the fat cat bankers and Wall Street muckety-mucks still made their millions. The insiders who had options for pennies eventually made their millions. Sadly, the everyday investor got screwed when Zuckerberg and company failed to disclose that there was a little bit of an issue with mobile: generating revenue. While the stock initially hit prices at half of what it opened at, it has since recovered some. Yet it is still only roughly 2/3′s of its initial offering price leaving many licking their wounds.

Sony Play Station Vita

I remember the halcyon days of Sony. Nothing they did was wrong, products were always quality and you could trust them. What the fuck happened? I shun Sony products like I do someone with the plague. My son was eager for a Vita when it was ready to go on sale earlier this year. Thank God we held off. Miserable battery life for a handheld game and price gouging on proprietary memory (necessary for playing!) are not the biggest of issues with this hand gaming unit. Frustratingly, previous games from PSP are not compatible unless they were digitally released as there is no UMD drive and there’s a dearth of quality games. No wonder Sony’s predecessor (PSP) is outselling the Vita. Sony gave a middle finger to its customers and its customers gave a middle finger right back.

iOS Maps

Not much needs to be said here. Cupertino was embarrassed and continues to be with this mapping solution that even governments are recommending that people don’t use. While things eventually will be ironed out, in the meantime many users are left wishing they still had native Google Maps. Hilariously, only a few weeks ago I was meeting a friend before a concert at the Hub Pub which as  bar near the Orpheum in Boston. My friend arrived a bit late. He placed his iPhone on the bar in front of me. It showed the Hub Pub, with the correct address, but IN ANTARCTICA! ANTARCTICA! Jesus. I snapped a quick picture of his screen and Tweeted it out as I thought it was just too funny. One of my followers responded back that had also previously been sent to Antarctica when looking for a different restaurant. Equally troubling wasn’t just the poor mapping, but the corporate battles leaving the end users as the big losers.

Windows 8

Cupertino wasn’t the only one with a big turd on their plate in 2012. While Apple’s problem is a relatively minor one in the whole scheme of things, Redmond has a bigger issue. Their phones aren’t selling well, their tablet sales are off to a dismal start & users simply don’t like Windows 8. I installed it on a machine that I don’t really use much just to check it out. Bottom line: it wasn’t designed well and certainly not intended for someone who uses a keyboard and mouse. Perhaps in time, those will be as antiquated as floppy drives, but until that time, you simply can’t design an operating system meant for gestures, touch-screens and mobile devices and expect desktop users to be happy. No way do I plan on “upgrading” to Windows 8 on my primary machine. Yet when the time comes that I need to replace it, I will have a much stronger inclination to switch back to a Mac rather than suffer with the Windows 8 mess. The video of the slightly tipsy woman hilariously demonstrates the problem. “Can I just write the fucking e-mail? How do I do that?” (2:18 is particularly funny as she learns how to get back to the desktop)

Click here to view the embedded video.

“How a Drunk Woman Uses Windows 8″

Boxee TV

I did review this item in the Fall but had to highlight it again as one of the worst tech failures of the year. Without re-hashing all of the failures of the product – let’s put it this way: The new Boxee should have been re-named and re-branded with a completely new name as it has zero resemblance to its predecessor. While the first Boxee allowed one to access pretty much any video digital content either locally owned or on the web, the new Boxee simply records broadcast channels as a DVR. Who wants to pay $15 per month to have the ability to record network channels only? If you are interested in this product for Christmas, there’s no need to run to the store – there will be plenty there as it can’t possibly appeal to many people.

Blackberry 10

Failure here is obviously simply the inability to push out this much needed update. While early reviews of the browser and the operating system are getting decent reviews – it simply doesn’t matter. Research in Motion will be used as a classic case of missing the boat and poor leadership in business schools for decades to come. With droves of users, government agencies and big business bailing on Blackberry already, it will be literally impossible to reel them back in regardless how cool the apps are or how innovative the browser is with Blackberry 10.

Pebble Watch

Like the Facebook IPO, everyone didn’t lose out on this one. The company got a fat $10 Million+ in their coffers to push out a watch. Oh, that’s right. They haven’t pushed it out yet. The Kickstarter thing became huge in 2012 with some pretty impressive products. Yet for every success story there were an equal amount of failures leading more people to question tossing money at these campaigns. Technology races ahead at amazing speed. Oddly, earlier this year, this watch seemed pretty amazing. By the time it is released, I’m not sure it will be seen as compelling to the people that ordered it. And there’s no getting around the fact that it is atrociously ugly and it needs to be charged every few days. I’m not even sure I’d want a watch that needed to be charged monthly – but every couple of days? Forget about it. $150? Um, I can practically get a Chromebook for that price these days.

Airtime

“The platform for great video conversation”. The problem for Airtime, the wildly hyped video chat service started by Napster founders, is that for a conversation you need at least two people. I’m not sure the service has enrolled that many people yet as users. What’s the point? Semi-random chat with people you are sort-of connected to on Facebook? Why not simply use Facebook video calling? For that matter, Skype, Google Hangouts & a slew of other services already offer more options and better features. And if it is totally random chat with naked strangers that you desire – Chat Roulette is still around as far as I know. There’s simply nothing compelling about Airtime and all the buzz and hot air earlier this year has already dissipated. Time will tell if Airtime will be able to build in enough features to make it worthwhile to use.

Zynga

Amazing how what was once a brilliant star in the mobile gaming world is now such a goat. Zynga raised over $1 Billion in their IPO a year ago but 2012 has been a miserable one for the company. With a stock that was once selling near $16/share, Zynga now finds themselves trading at but a fraction of that at $2 and change. With $53 million in losses in just this last quarter alone, the future looks dim. The unethical practices (blatantly ripping off other developer’s games and re-branding as their own), dated games that never get updated, glitchy products and poor management all caught up with Zynga in 2012. I know that, like many, simply don’t even bother downloading a game anymore with the Zynga name on it – not worth the bugs and assault of ads. Good riddance.

Well that’s what I came up with. Any other tech disasters from 2012 that I missed?

Report: Paul McCartney To Perform With Surviving Members of Nirvana

0
0

We’re expecting big collaborations tonight at Madison Square Garden for the 12-12-12: Concert For Sandy Relief, but if a report from The Guardian holds true we sure know what the biggest one will be. The Guardian reports that Paul McCartney will perform with the surviving members of Nirvana.

Apparently Dave Grohl phoned up Macca to “jam with some mates,” leading to a session that also included Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic. The Guardian goes into a bit more detail

McCartney said: “I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’

“And somebody whispered to me: ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

If today was April Fool’s Day we’d think this was a joke. Macca and Cobain are on opposite ends of the anger spectrum, though Helter Skelter was as punk and grunge as it gets. Now we’re even more excited for tonight’s benefit which also features Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Roger Waters and more.

UPDATE: Novoselic has confirmed the collaboration and shares details:

It is a new song that's kind of Helter Skelter meets Scentless Apprentice. It rocks with a heavy groove. St. Paul is powerful. @

This is expected to take place near the end of the show.

Video: Star Wars Xmas – What Do You Get a Wookie For Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)

We’ll make no bones about the fact that today’s video highlights maybe the worst Christmas song in the history of the (post-BC) world, but we had to post it simply because it exists. Hopefully, this should make Christmas shopping for the wooks in your life a little easier this holiday season. And keeping with the spirit of last week’s Dr. Dog video, there’s even more Star Wars action figures in store this week in this DIY production.

As we reported yesterday, Roger Waters stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night for a chat with the host. Waters discussed his role in tonight’s 12-12-12: The Concert For Sandy Relief and shared a few spoilers about what to expect from him this evening.

Rog told Fallon that he will perform “a little bit of The Wall and a little bit of Dark Side of the Moon.” More specifically he said he’ll play Money, Us and Them and Comfortably Numb. Even more exciting, Waters revealed he’ll duet on Comfortably Numb with Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder.

In another big of exciting news, Waters confirmed that he is working on a new album. Fallon pressed him for details on the album title to which Roger offered “I’ve Been Saying This for 19 Years, So Don’t Hold Your Breath.”

Pro-Shot Video: Phish – Scents and Subtle Sounds (Camden ’03)

0
0

We just came across a gem that’s New-To-YouTube that seemed too good to be true – 30 marvelous pro-shot minutes of Phish performing the best version of Scents and Subtle Sounds yet. The clip was filmed at Camden’s then-named Tweeter Center on July 30th, 2003 and the Scents included within took place towards the beginning of the first set.

When we stumbled on this clip we had a hard time believing it was indeed the genuine article as there’s no other footage from that show on YouTube. After searching the internet for photos from that night (Trey changing outfits at setbreak threw us for a loop) and comparing it to a recording we can indeed confirm this video is the real deal. It was apparently sourced from the multi-cam lawn feed that was shown on the big screens at the venue that night.

Just one show after the epic Burgettstown performance that included a slew of bust outs and an unforgettable Harpua, Phish visited Camden for a two-night run on July 30th and 31st. The band came out of the gates hot with a rare-at-the-time My Friend, My Friend and their first take on Lonesome Cowboy Bill by Velvet Underground since Halloween ’98. Then, the quartet lit into a 30-minute Scents and Subtle Sounds that stands as an example of why 2003 shouldn’t be brushed off as a bad year in Phish history. So clear your schedule and check this shit out…

Let’s hope more from this show surfaces soon!

Umphrey’s Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss Play For Dolphins, Penguins, Sea Otters and Fans at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium

MasterCard’s Priceless promotion staged events in interesting locations across the country for cardholders and one of these events hit right in our wheelhouse. Last night Umphrey’s McGee guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss teamed up for an acoustic show at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. More specifically the show took place at the Abbott Oceanarium – a pavilion featuring dolphins, sea otters, penguins and more mammals swimming around as the pair played in front of them.

Brendan and Jake filled the set with rarities, covers, traditional holiday songs and guest spots. Fellow UM members Joel Cummins and Kris Myers played with their band mates for most of the show. Vocalist Michelle Hallman joined the quartet for a trio of holiday songs as well as UM rarity Bullhead City. The setlist varied greatly from the Acoustic Holiday Show the pair performed last weekend.

Here’s a look at Jake, Joel, Kris and Brendan performing Dear Prudence…

And here’s the entire setlist…

One Set:
In the Kitchen -> Glory > Christmas Time Is Here, Can’t Find My Way Home , Passing, Nemo^ > Sweetness^ > Nemo^, Booth Love^, Dear Prudence^, Anchor Drops^, Rocking Around the Christmas Tree^*, The Christmas Song^*, Resolution^ > JO^ > In the Kitchen^

Spoilers Aplenty: Minute-By-Minute Breakdown of 12-12-12!?

Boot Camp: Donald Fagen Band ’06 Soundboard

0
0

During a hiatus from Steely Dan in 2006, Donald Fagen embarked on a theater tour to support his third solo album, Morph The Cat. Fagen’s extremely talented band featured keyboardist Jeff Young, Wayne Krantz and Jon Herington on guitars, trumpet wiz Michael Leonhart, drummer Keith Carlock, bassist Freddie Washington, Walt Weiskopf on sax with Carolyn Leonhart and Cindy Mizelle on vocals. On the heels of the flood of outrageous Steely Dan bootlegs that surfaced last month comes a soundboard from that memorable tour circulated by the same guy (Buttmanos on Trader’s Den).

When Fagen and his band pulled into NYC’s Beacon Theater on March 7th, 2006 they treated the audience to a mix of Steely Dan classics such as Home At Last, Pretzel Logic and FM with gems from his solo catalog. He also turned the show over to Canadian singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright (daughter of Loudon and sister of Rufus) for her own Year Of The Dragon. The sound on this recording is tremendous and any Steely Dan fan would be wise to add it to their collection. For MP3 files of Disc One (Disc Two coming tomorrow) head over to the Talkin’ About My Revolutions. Head to The Trader’s Den (registration required) for the FLACs.

Adam Sandler: Hallelujah (w/ Paul Shaffer)

Bon Jovi: It’s My Life, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Who Says You Can’t Go Home (w/ Bruce Springsteen), Living On A Prayer

Eric Clapton: Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out, Got To Get Better In A Little While, Crossroads

Rolling Stones: You Get Me Rocking, Jumping Jack Flash

Alicia Keys: Brand New Me, No One

The Who: Who Are You, Bell Boy, Pinball Wizard, See Me Feel Me/Listening To You, Baba O’Riley, Love Reign O’er Me, Tea and Theatre

Kanye West: Clique > Mercy > Power > Jesus Walks > All Of The Lights > Diamonds From Sierra Leone > Diamonds > Touch The Sky, Gold Digger, Good Life, Runaway, Stronger

Paul McCartney: Helter Skelter, Let Me Roll It, 1985, My Valentine (w/ Diana Krall), Blackbird, Cut Me Some Slack (w/ Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic), I’ve Got A Feeling, Live and Let Die

Alicia Keys: Empire State of Mind Pt. 2

All proceeds from tonight’s concert benefit the Robin Hood Relief Fund and will be used to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Please head to the organization’s website to donate to the cause.

7:35PM: Bruce and his band opens with the fitting Land of Hope and Dreams from his most recent album, Wrecking Ball.

7:39PM: Springsteen sticks with the “new stuff” and launches into Wrecking Ball as the crowd goes nuts at all the local references.

7:46PM: The Boss performs a song he wrote about his adopted hometown of Asbury Park – My City of Ruins. Springsteen uses the tune to tell stories and introduce the band during the Wrecking Ball Tour. Here he tells the story of Asbury Park’s recent rebirth.

Here’s former Crazy Horse guitarist Nils Lofgren in action:

7:56PM: Bruce brings out his “great friend and neighbor” Jon Bon Jovi for a duet on Born To Run. Two of Jersey’s biggest names share the stage together. The Jersey Boys share smiles as they both shout out the familiar “1-2-3-4″ that brings us to the end of the song.

8:01PM: The E Street Band walks off the stage as Springsteen fits four songs into his allotted time slot. Now we’ve likely got a few minutes of videos and speeches before the next act.

8:05PM: Host Billy Crystal riffs on the differences between now and when he hosted The Concert For New York in 2001. He gives props to Gov. Christie and Gov. Cuomo who are both in the audience.

8:10PM: Producer James Dolan gets a huge cheer, doesn’t hurt that it’s such a happy event and that the Knicks are playing well.

8:13PM: Now Roger Waters is up and he leads his band into the In The Flesh from The Wall. Impressive how quickly they got him set up after the humongous E Street Band finished.

8:16 – So far Waters has stuck to material from The Wall as The Happiest Days of Our Lives and Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2 follow In The Flesh. You’ll notice former SNL guitarist G.E. Smith in Rog’s band.

8:23: “Now it’s time for some Dark Side,” Waters exclaims before starting up Money. The former Pink Floyd mastermind hasn’t performed Money with his band since ending the Dark Side of the Moon Live Tour in 2008. Doesn’t sound like it though as the group throughly crush it.

Us and Them video:

8:35: Vedder comes out for the expected duet on Comfortably Numb. Vedder sings the part David Gilmour sang in the original and knocks it out of the park…naturally.

8:47: Comedian Adam Sandler offers at times a terrible and at times hilarious version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. Paul Shaffer provides musical accompaniment.

8:55: Twilight star Kristen Stewart introduces Bon Jovi who kick things off with It’s My Life. The band came out of Sayreville, New Jersey – a town that was devastated by Sandy.

9:02: Hey, it’s that song from Deadliest Catch! We’re 90 minutes in and Springsteen’s the only one to play anything written this century. We’ll see if The Boss returns the favor and sits in with Bon Jovi.

9:05: Well there ya go. Springsteen comes out to help Bon Jovi on Who Says You Can’t Come Home. Jon Bon Jovi has a goofy grin throughout.

9:11: Every shot of the crowd drives home who really got the tickets for this event – rich dudes. Something not right about that. The Concert For New York’s crowd helped make that show so special.

9:28: Clapton sits down for an acoustic rendition of Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out. Way to be a bummer, Eric.

9:31: Thankfully Eric straps on the electric and treats us to Derek and the Dominos’ Got To Get Better In A Little While.

9:36: Clapton, who will return to the Garden in April for his Crossroads festival tears into a stirring version of the blues classic.

9:48: The Rolling Stones may not get to MSG for their 50 and Counting run, but they still made their way to the Garden. You Got Me Rocking off 1994′s Voodoo Lounge was the odd choice for an opener. The group hasn’t played You Got Me Rocking during the first three shows of the 50 and Counting run.

9:53: Jumping Jack Flash, complete with its line about “Crossfire Hurricane” is usually an encore for the Stones. Tonight it was song #2 which wound up being the group’s finale. Lots of chatter about the Stones only getting two songs, but remember they were a late addition.

10:11: Alicia Keys proves you don’t have to be English, a man and/or white to make the cut for the benefit. It was just Keys and her piano for Brand New Me and No One.

10:16: In a sign of the times Alicia Keys asks the crowd to put their cellphones in the air instead of the old school lighters. The crowd obliged…

10:28: The Who open with Who Are You and the censor misses again when Roger Daltrey screams “who the fuck are you?”

10:36: The late Keith Moon appears via video for Bell Boy:

10:41: Pete Townshend turns the volume way up for Pinball Wizard:

10:43: The Who run through a bit of Tommy and then deliver a powerful Baba O’Riley. Townshend adlibs “It’s Only Sandy Wasteland” about as awkwardly as possible.

10:53: Apparently Rog’s shirt was chafing him as open it went for Love Reign O’er Me:

11:01: Bizarre choice by The Who to end their set with Tea and Theatre off 2008′s Endless Wire though that’s how they’ve been ending their shows lately. Townshend screams “go have a fucking beer” and once again the censors miss beeping it out by a second.

11:15: The crowd of old white dudes didn’t show Kanye much love. He barreled through a medley of hits including Clique, Mercy, Power and Jesus Walks.

11:27: Ten minute time limit for Kanye? Good try producers. The rapper’s medley went well beyond his allotted time.

11:46: Billy Joel has been off the road since early in 2010. He opens his set with the apocalyptic tale Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)

11:52: Following Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song), another tune (with parenthesis in the title), Billy throws Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas to the start of New York State of Mind.

12:03: Ever since Billy “refreshed” his band a few years back with young guns, they’ve been much more engaging. That’s been true tonight which is good considering the crowd has been watching the show for nearly five hours at this point.

12:17: Chris Martin came out to one of the side stages and opened his mini-set with Viva La Vida, solo acoustic style.

12:18: Martin welcomes out another adopted New Yorker, Michael Stipe, for R.E.M.’s Losing My Religion.

12:37: Helter Skelter gives the two billion people watching the chance to see the awesomeness that is Hidden Track drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. behind the kit. Hey, nice mom jeans, Paul.

12:42: Next up is one of the gems of the Paul McCartney solo repertoire – Let Me Roll It. The tune turns the spotlight on two other killer musicians in Paul’s band: keyboardist Wix Wickens and multi-instrumentalist Brian Ray on bass.

12:47: Macca heads to the piano for Wings deep cut 1985, there are some who would fault him for picking Wings songs over Beatles but not me.

12:51: McCartney teamed up with Diana Krall to create his latest album, Kisses On The Bottom, and he brought Mrs. Costello out for the single from that LP – My Valentine.

12:56: After Blackbird, the most anticipated moment of the evening finally takes place. McCartney brings out Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear of Nirvana to perform a new original called Cut Me Some Slack.

UPDATE: Appears the quartet recorded Cut Me Some Slack for the forthcoming album Sound City – Real to Reel which was inspired by Dave Grohl’s Sound City film.

1:03: Okay, that was absolutely ridiculous. Those four guys created a sound unlike anything any of them have played in the past. Get them on the road, STAT! Kudos to Macca for taking such a chance and getting out of his proverbial box.

1:11: Macca’s set comes to a close with a pyro-laden Live and Let Die.

1:15: The producers should’ve let Live and Let Die close out the evening, but instead Macca welcomes Alicia Keys for Empire State of Mind, Pt. 2 as first responders flood the stage.

1:20: A stirring moment as the crowd chants “U.S.A” at the end of the show. Thanks for reading! We’ll add videos as they come in.

Unofficial 31 Days of Dead – 2012 Edition: Day 13

Welcome back to the third installment of “The Unofficial 31 Days of Dead.” The past two years were so much fun that I decided to do it again. The idea for these compilations came about after dead.net ran its “30 Days of Dead” in November 2010. While the Deadhead community at large was no doubt thrilled to receive previously unreleased tracks from the band’s vast archives, many of us were hoping for just a bit…more.  Hey, we are Deadheads – we are always hoping for more! Therefore, I thought it might be fun to keep the music flowing by selecting my own daily picks. The month of December seemed more than appropriate since New Year’s Eve celebrations were such a big part of the Grateful Dead. Let’s think of these daily picks as an advent calendar leading up to New Year’s Eve. Unlike the “Official 30 Days of Dead,” there is no contest here. Instead, the prize is the music and the winner is the listener.

Cold Rain & Snow
10/12/83 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

Cold Rain and Snow is a song that went through many makeovers by the Grateful Dead. It started out as a speedy psychedelic rocker in the ’60s (see the first album, Grateful Dead in 1967) and then got slowed down considerably in ’70s, almost becoming a ballad (see the Steppin’ Out and Steal Your Face official releases) before getting pepped up again in the ’80s as a rocker with anthem-like qualities. Today’s offering is of the latter variety.

Apparently feeling liberated after busting out St. Stephen the previous evening, the Grateful Dead came out rockin’ with a Cold Rain opener. This powerhouse version is notable for the very catchy repeating riff that Jerry plays during the final verse that carries over into the finale.

Over the past few months Bonnaroo has been rolling out videos from their Hay Bale Sessions series of performances on the Bonnaroo365 YouTube channel. The series is described as “Tucked away backstage at Bonnaroo, buried beneath a stack of hay bales, is a room where artists duck out of the weekend’s madness to play stripped-down versions of their songs. The Hay Bale Sessions will lead you through a secret doorway where you can join artists to watch these pure and intimate performances.” The latest set of videos from the Hay Bale Sessions features HT faves Punch Brothers.

Punch Brothers’ Hay Bale Sessions contains three tunes – Patchwork Girlfriend, This Girl and Movement and Location. We’ve put the three clips into one handy playlist for your viewing pleasure…
