It Takes Two To Make It Out Of Sight…

Mmoss: Only Children

In a year rife with amazing psych-rock albums, perhaps the lava lamp gods have saved the best for last with Mmoss’s debut album. This one is for the jam-lovers, with lots of drawn out passages that bristle with out-of-body energy. These moments have a just-let-the-tape-roll feel, like a bunch of guys turned in towards each other zoned in on the droning groove. Can only imagine what they’re like live… looking forward to finding out someday.

El Ten Eleven: Transitions

We all have our favorites, and El Ten Eleven have been one of mine for a while now. I don’t waste an opportunity to try and sell this amazing guitar/bass-and-drums duo, and their new LP is a perfect place to start. Through a dizzying array of loops and live sampling, these two guys construct some of the most beautiful, awe-inspiring instrumental music. Half Sudoku puzzle, half picturesque vista, this album finds El Ten Eleven at the top of their game.

Over the past few months Bonnaroo has been rolling out videos from their Hay Bale Sessions series of performances on the Bonnaroo365 YouTube channel. The series is described as “Tucked away backstage at Bonnaroo, buried beneath a stack of hay bales, is a room where artists duck out of the weekend’s madness to play stripped-down versions of their songs. The Hay Bale Sessions will lead you through a secret doorway where you can join artists to watch these pure and intimate performances.” The latest set of videos from the Hay Bale Sessions features San Diego’s Delta Spirit.

Delta Spirit’s Hay Bale Sessions contains three tunes – California, Tear It Up and Empty House. We’ve put the three clips into one handy playlist for your viewing pleasure…

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s Wrecking Ball Tour continued last night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., where The Boss and his band welcomed old friends Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) and Mike Ness (Social Distortion) to help out at points during the show.

Morello emerged at the start of the show for the Land of Hopes and Dreams opener and then returned for versions of Death To My Hometown, This Depression, Ghost of Tom Joad, Badlands and Tenth Avenue Freeze-out. Meanwhile, Social Distortion front man Mike Ness came out in the middle of the show for a rollicking take on his band’s 1992 classic Bad Luck. Springsteen has long been a Social Distortion fan and collaborated with Ness on Misery Loves Company from his 1999 solo album. Ness first sat in with the E Street Band in 2009 during a run where Morello guested as well.

Unofficial 31 Days of Dead – 2012 Edition: Day Six

$

Welcome back to the third installment of “The Unofficial 31 Days of Dead.” The past two years were so much fun that I decided to do it again. The idea for these compilations came about after dead.net ran its “30 Days of Dead” in November 2010. While the Deadhead community at large was no doubt thrilled to receive previously unreleased tracks from the band’s vast archives, many of us were hoping for just a bit…more.  Hey, we are Deadheads – we are always hoping for more! Therefore, I thought it might be fun to keep the music flowing by selecting my own daily picks. The month of December seemed more than appropriate since New Year’s Eve celebrations were such a big part of the Grateful Dead. Let’s think of these daily picks as an advent calendar leading up to New Year’s Eve. Unlike the “Official 30 Days of Dead,” there is no contest here. Instead, the prize is the music and the winner is the listener.

Space > Estimated Prophet > The Other One
7/1/78 Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, KS

Talk about a strange and obscure show. The Dead played a single-set show at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City as the opening act for Willie Nelson’s annual Fourth of July picnic. There is no soundboard in the vault. In fact, there is only one known audience recording to document this concert courtesy of legendary taper Dr. Bob Wagner. But, there is just as much magic here – if not more – than there was at Red Rocks later in the week. Judas! Say it ain’t so! The song combo here is identical to Red Rocks (i.e., Estimated > Other One) but in my opinion this version easily surpasses Red Rocks. If this show was available on soundboard it would rank high on everybody’s Best of 1978 list.

“If you are driving a car while listening to this combo of tunes I challenge you to drive slowly.” – Ed Martin

Today’s selection begins with Jerry noodling over Drums. His tone and style sound similar to his “Close Encounters Space” from the epic show in Eugene on 1/22/78 (see 2010 “31 Days”). This kind of weirdness always provides a clue that good things are to come. Eventually, he dials up the Mutron signaling the start of Estimated Prophet. This version is incredible. The buoyant “California” jam is huge but the outro jam is even better. Similar to the Red Rocks version, it starts out quiet, dark and smokey. Garcia patiently crafts a stunning jam that gradually builds – his playing becoming more urgent. The band is right there with him. Game on! A groove is found and the band is swinging! The notes soar higher and the music gets more intense. The climax is reached when Jerry suddenly takes off into a sustained trill. I’m guessing that the poor fans who came to get mellow at a Willie Nelson concert didn’t know what hit’em!

With nary a moment to catch your breath, the band drops right into The Other One. This driven version comes dangerously close to dethroning the epic versions in 1978 from the Uni-Dome (2/5/78) and Winterland (10/21/78). Unlike those versions which shone brightly at the end, this one has a real edge to it throughout the entire song. The momentum builds quickly. The sheer power and energy is simply breathtaking. If you are driving a car while listening to this combo of tunes I challenge you to drive slowly. Actually, don’t bother. I have tried. It’s an act of futility. Jerry is shredding everything in sight. His guitar licks are too vicious and nasty. Energy of this magnitude can not be sustained for very long. So, all too soon the band must put it back into the bottle. At a little more than five minutes this is probably one of the shortest versions of The Other One but what a ride! Now go listen to it.

Picture Show: Titus Andronicus at Webster Hall

Titus Andronicus @ Webster Hall, December 2nd

Titus Andronicus closed their tour in style at Webster Hall this past Sunday. Although they couldn’t match the craziness of the mosh pit that occurred during Ceremony’s opening set, they made their fans scream along, leap from the stage and crowd surf on the arms of their brethren at the sold-out show.

[All Photos by Jeremy Gordon]

Mixing tunes off the recently released Local Business with classics such as Titus Andronicus, To Old Friends And New and A More Perfect Union, the band expertly weaved punk, indie and classic rock stylings to create their own signature sound. Throughout the evening, the New Jersey natives showed why they were honored as one of Paste Magazine’s Best Live Acts of 2012 and are darlings of (Grantland) writers everywhere.

Happy to finish the exhaustive tour in front of their hometown fans, the band tore through The Contours’ 1962 hit Do You Love Me as vocalist Patrick Stickles was literally carried off by the crowd. When the group returned for the encore Stickles remarked, “One more I guess. We don’t usually do this, but if you insist,” before starting a cover of The Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar that brought the night to a close. Here’s a full gallery of photos from Titus Andronicus at Webster Hall…

Bloggy Goodness: Funky Meters New Year’s @ Capitol Theatre

When the initial schedule for the first few months of concerts at the newly-reopened Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York was announced the Steve Miller Band was set to play there on New Year’s Eve. Apparently there’s been a change in plans as that show has been cancelled and been replaced by a funkier option. The Funky Meters will headline The Cap on New Year’s Eve with Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk set to open. Tickets will run $90 and $45 and will go on sale soon. And of course this news comes out just minutes after we posted our 2012-2013 New Year’s Eve Concert Guide.

When your band already has a channel solely dedicated to them on SiriusXM it’s probably easy to arrange hosting your own show on it. Yesterday on Pearl Jam Radio, PJ lead singer Eddie Vedder did just that, when he premiered the very appropriately titled The Eddie Vedder Radio Show. The limited run show will feature Vedder’s “favorite songs, from early punk rock influences to unreleased material from his personal archives,” as well as “personal stories about his career in rock music.”

One More $hot: Rolling Stones Want $40 For Live Stream

As we reported back in October, The Rolling Stones‘ final 50 & Counting run show, which takes place at Newark’s Prudential Center on December 15th, will be broadcast live as a Pay-Per-View special. The Stones have teamed up with the WWE to distribute the live special. Today, the full list of cable providers offering the $40 special has been posted along with ordering details. It has also been revealed that fans can watch the show over the web via Yahoo! Music.

We’ll be interested to see how many potential viewers pony up the $40 fee to watch online. While $40 is in line with other Pay-Per-View specials, it’s way more than our readers are used to spending on live music webcasts. Just ask Butch Trucks about how Moogis and its high prices worked out for him. Purchasers will be able to watch the show on-demand for up to 30 days after the event.

Would you spend $40 to watch the Stones from Newark on the web or on TV?

Trey Anastasio Solo Acoustic in Atlantic City @ Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Sandy Relief Benefit Concert: Setlist

Tonight Phish front man Trey Anastasio opened for one of his musical heroes, Neil Young, at the Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey by playing a rare solo acoustic set. Neil Young organized the show to raise funds for victims of SuperStorm Sandy and headlines the evening backed by Crazy Horse.

Trey stuck mainly to unplugged versions of Phish classics such as Sample In A Jar, Theme From The Bottom, Brian and Robert and Back On The Train. The guitarist did play both Architect and Let Me Lie off his latest album, Traveler, noting that the former was written recently with his friend Steve “The Dude of Life” Pollak. Anastasio, a New Jersey native, discussed his time spending summers on the Jersey Shore between Let Me Lie and Wolfman’s Brother and dedicated Water In The Sky to his wife Sue.

Before starting Chalk Dust, Big Red mentioned that he’d only seen Neil Young perform with Crazy Horse once and called it among the best musical experiences of his life. Anastasio has remained a huge fan of Young and even penned an essay about him for Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists List.

Setlist…

Soundcheck: Sample In A Jar, Character Zero, The Wedge

Set: Back On The Train, Let Me Lie, Wolfman’s Brother, Theme From The Bottom, Water In The Sky, Sample In A Jar, Brian and Robert, Architect, Chalk Dust Torture, Backwards Down The Number Line

Unofficial 31 Days of Dead – 2012 Edition: Day Seven

Box Of Rain
9/19/87 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

Box of Rain is a special song. It is the first track on one of the band’s best albums ever, American Beauty, and is one of only a handful of songs that was composed and sung by bassist Phil Lesh. It has a beautiful melody despite being written during a dark period in Phil’s personal life when his father was dying of cancer. And, for a long while it was as rare as hen’s teeth making it one of the most coveted songs by Deadheads in the band’s catalog.

Outside of its debut on September 17, 1970, it was performed live on and off between Fall 1972 and Summer 1973 before being shelved for what most fans believed would be indefinitely. Therefore, it was a huge surprise when the Grateful Dead revived Box of Rain at Hampton Coliseum in 1986. The magnitude of that bust-out ranks up there with St. Stephen, Attics of My Life, Dark Star, Cosmic Charlie and of course, Unbroken Chain. Following the Hampton Box of Rain, chants for “Phil” became as common as the “Not Fade Away” chant. And Phil was only too happy to oblige.

Here is a great version from the end of the first set at Madison Square Garden on 9/19/87. I was fortunate enough to have been in attendance that evening (and the evening prior – what a Dew!). Phil was in great spirits and sings this version with lots of gusto. This was “the spacey show” from a five-night run at MSG and Garcia’s solo during Box of Rain has just the right amount of cosmic echo to clue the audience in that they should brace for space.

Phil Lesh and The “Q” @ Terrapin Crossroads: Night One

The “Q”, the longest-running version of Grateful Dead / Furthur bassist Phil Lesh’s Phil and Friends projects returned last night for the first of four shows at Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads venue in San Rafael, Calif. The band, which features Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes on guitars, Rob Barraco on keyboards, Phil on bass and John Molo on drums mixed classic rock covers with gems from the Grateful Dead songbook during the first two sets of the long-awaited four-night run.

Both Passenger and Doin’ That Rag, the first two songs played, were among the tunes that best showed the power of the ensemble during their early ’00s heyday. The group nodded to one of Haynes’ other bands, the Allman Brothers Band, by working Midnight Rider into the middle of China Cat Rider. Viola Lee Blues, another song that thrived in the “Q” era finished the first set.

The second set saw the quintet stretch their legs improvisationally, weaving Playing In The Band into Shakedown Street with a ferocious jam. Lesh and his band worked a cover of Blind Faith’s Can’t Find My Way Home out of Caution before settling into Southern Cross by Crosby, Stills and Nash. The typical China > Rider pairing was split up last night as China Cat came in the first set while I Know You Rider closed out set two.

Set One: Jam > Passenger, Doin’ That Rag, China Cat Sunflower > Midnight Rider > China Cat Sunflower, Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues, Althea, Viola Lee Blues

Set Two: Playing In The Band > Jam > Shakedown Street > Can’t Find My Way Home > Caution > Southern Cross > Terrapin Station > I Know You Rider, Donor Rap

Encore: US Blues

The “Q” plays Terrapin Crossroads tonight, tomorrow and Sunday. You can watch from home.

Video: Matthew E. White – Will You Love Me

If you were to base your guess on what the music of Matthew E. White would sound like by solely looking at him, you’d likely peg him for being the front-man for a crunchy Southern-rock jamband. To the contrary, the bearded, long-haired singer-songwriter, who released his highly recommended debut album Big Inner back in August, has crafted a sound that’s drenched in the slow-burn, baby-making sounds of Stax funk and soul, mixed with elements of gospel, folk and rock.

White, who we’d like to anoint “The Barry White for the Pitchfork Generation,” is in the midst of run with The Mountain Goats that continues tonight at the Santa Fe Brewing Company in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and recently released the music video for the panty-dropping track Will You Love Me. Ladies be warned.

Arcade Fire + James Murphy Collaboration = ::faint::

The big news in the blogosphere today is ArcadeFireTube finding confirmation that Arcade Fire and James Murphy are currently working on three new tracks that may appear on Arcade Fire’s new album. Scott Rodger, Arcade Fire’s manager, recently told Music Week, “They’re in with James Murphy on three or so songs, plus Markus Dravs who is a long-time collaborator. They write too many songs – that’s a good problem to have. There’s around 35 songs with Arcade Fire, two albums’-worth for sure.”

We can only image what a collaboration between the LCD Soundsystem mastermind and Arcade Fire would sound like. Hopefully we’ll find out soon. Count on ArcadeFireTube to have the latest.

Earlier this year iconic rockers Van Halen reunited with David Lee Roth for an album and a tour that helped us remember just how good the band was at the peak of their powers. For today’s Full Show Friday selection we’ve got 80 fabulous, professionally-shot minutes of live Van Halen from one of those peak power years – 1983 – recorded in Argentina.

All the hits are here as well as covers of Dancing In The Street, Summertime Blues and (Oh) Pretty Woman. Check out this historic video of Van Halen kicking ass and taking names…
