0

HT faves Band of Horses will return to New York City on December 11th for a pair of very different shows at The Manhattan Center. The first show will take place in the intimate confines of the venue’s Grand Ballroom. BoH has billed this 7PM gig as a “Special Acoustic Performance.” Later, at 10PM, the band will move to the bigger Hammerstein Ballroom portion of the building for a show billed as “Electric Music.”

Presales start on Wednesday, Oct. 17th at 10AM ET.

Rolling Stones To Team With WWE For 50th Anniversary Show “One More Shot” Pay-Per-View Broadcast From Newark

Odds are that not many Rolling Stones fans will be able to score tickets to the band’s four 50th Anniversary shows in Newark and London that were finally announced earlier today and are scheduled for late 2012. Well, we can take some solace in the fact that the fourth and final show, set to take place at Newark’s Prudential Center on December 15th, will be webcast on a Pay-Per-View basis around the world.

For the U.S. version of the broadcast, billed as “One More Shot,” The Rolling Stones have teamed with an organization that’s very familiar with Pay-Per-Views – wrestling’s WWE – to distribute the concert. Internationally, The Rolling Stones will work with Endemol. We like this part of the announcement

“50 and Counting is set to be a phenomenal global celebration of the Rolling Stones and we’ll soon be announcing further plans to make it an interactive experience for fans like no other,” said Tim Hincks, president of Endemol Group.

No word yet on how much the One More Shot Pay-Per-View will cost and whether former Stones members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor will participate in one or more of the 50th Anniversary shows.

Rolling Stones Tease 50th Anniversary Shows Setlist

Yesterday, just before The Rolling Stones announced four 50th Anniversary shows at the 02 Arena in London and The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, they posted a hand-written list of songs placed on a piano that at the time garnered little notice. Now that the shows have been announced, it’s thought that the list is the potential running order for the upcoming gigs.

[via @RollingStones]

The list contains most of the band’s biggest hits as well as choice covers from their early days. What’s surprising is that the two new songs, Doom and Gloom and One Last Shot, are nowhere to be found. Also, She’s So Cold is listed twice. So for all we know this could just be the running order for a rehearsal. Regardless, it only serves to get us more excited for the shows.

Songs Listed…

“She’s So Cold”
“You Got Me Rocking”
“All Down The Line”
“Respectable”
“Tumbling Dice”
“Honky Tonk Woman”
“Beast Of Burden”
“Wild Horses”
“Can’t Always Get”
“It’s All Over Now”
“Lady Jane”
“Route 66″
“Little Red Rooster”
“Miss You”
“Not Fade Away”
“She’s So Cold”
“Start Me”
“Sweet Virginia”
“Worried About You”
“Paint It Black”
“The Last Time”
“Ruby Tuesday”
“Midnight Rambler”

The final show of the run will be broadcast as a Pay-Per-View special.

Technology Tuesday: Logitech UE 9000 Headphones

0
0

The Ultimate Ears line of audio products continues to add to its line of outstanding sounding earphones, professional in-ear monitors and wireless speakers with two pairs of recently released full-sized headphones. The company, which had previously made custom in-ear monitors for musicians and was acquired by Logitech in 2008, has become known for outstanding audio quality and their own signature sound. I have had the opportunity to listen to many of the products in the Ultimate Ears (UE) line and still use the UE 600‘s as my day-to-day earbuds when travelling.

With the release of the UE 6000 and 9000, Logitech now offers their first full-sized, sealed, over-the-ear headphones. While both are noise-canceling, the 9000′s, which we will look at this week, are also wireless with Bluetooth capabilities. Unfortunately, many wireless headphones I have used in the past offer that convenience at the expense of the audio quality. I was eager to listen to the UE 9000′s and see if both wireless & high-fidelity could go hand in hand.

[Logitech Ultimate Ears 9000 Bluetooth Wireless Headphones]

Overview The UE 9000 ($399 suggested retail) is a sealed, over-the-ear headphone that can be used either wirelessly with Bluetooth or wired as a traditional headphone. When used wirelessly, the rechargeable battery pack (charged via USB) offers about ten hours of listening. In addition to the sleek, modern, industrial design, the UE 9000′s are immensely comfortable. Even with ample, full-sized plush memory foam ear cushions and a well designed headband with flexible, rotating joints, these never feel heavy. Quite honestly, they are perhaps the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn giving me hours and hours of straight listening without any discomfort. Unlike most over-the-ear (closed) headphones I’ve used in the past, there was no eardrum “throbbing” after extended playing or any other discomfort that is often associated with this type of headphone.

Sound Quality I was eager to immediately listen to these headphones upon unboxing and didn’t want to bother pairing wirelessly with my phone, so the first listening experience I had was wired. Not surprising based upon my past experiences with UE products, the sound was stellar. I jumped from track to track and was more impressed with each song that I listened to. I can’t stand loose bass that simply thuds all over the place. The UE 9000′s offered deep bass that was also tight and didn’t bleed over to the mid-tones. Warm, natural sounding mids with  beautiful, crisp vocals made me not want to stop listening. With closed earphones, sometimes you don’t get the wide-open airy sound that higher quality on-the-air (open) headphones can offer. Fortunately, the UE 9000′s do give the listener the brilliant wide soundstage and not a compressed, “cavern” like listening experience. Additionally, the power is quite good with ample punch.

After listening for an hour or so, it was time to pull the cord and use the Bluetooth capabilities of the headphones. I crossed my fingers that the sound would be similar to the wired option, as most wireless solutions (especially Bluetooth) suffer major sound degradation. Happily, I was thrilled with the sound streaming wirelessly. There’s no doubt that it is different sound, but it is also very pleasing. The bass is actually a bit deeper but comes at the expense of more defined mids. While the sound was slightly less open and seemed a bit more processed, it was remarkably good for Bluetooth and hands down the best wireless headphone I have ever heard. No matter if I was listening to jazz like Medeski, Martin and Wood with exotic percussion, thumping bass notes, and delicate piano; boosting the volume with hard charging rock and heavy guitar riffs, or watching a movie, the UE 9000′s performed wonderfully for any headphone, much less one not encumbered with a wire.

Bluetooth, just like Mp3, has different codecs that produce audio with wildly different quality. However, not all source devices are able to stream with the newer Bluetooth codecs. Fortunately, the UE 9000′s include the newest and best codec called APT-X which is uncompressed and full band. Additionally, other codecs are also provided and the headphones automatically switch to best possible codec that they are able to use.

Noise Cancelling When used wired, you can toggle noise cancelling on or off. When used wirelessly, the UE 9000′s will always be in active noise cancelling mode. Frankly, I didn’t actually notice ANY difference moving from wired/noise cancelling to wireless which shows how good these headphones are in wireless mode. Obviously, with the oversized ear cushions and the closed design, these headphones will be passively blocking most outside noise regardless of the noise cancelling. With the addition of the active noise cancelling technology, even more sound is blocked out. The noise cancelling is very good and definitely blocks out quite a bit of the outside environment without sounding too artificial or processed. I’ve tried a few pairs of noise cancelling headphones that actually do a better job of blocking things other than drone but that came at the steep expense of overall sound quality.

Bluetooth Features In addition to wireless listening there are a few other Bluetooth features (if you have the right device!) There are dual microphones built in to allow for use as a wireless headset for clear phone calls, nicely placed buttons built into the headset to allow for volume & track control, and a “listen through” button which not only mutes the music but also uses the mics to amplify the outside sounds. This allows you to carry on a conversation without having to take off the headphones. Perfect for ordering a cocktail on the airplane! When using wired, the wire also duplicates these buttons for easy control. However, unbeknownst to me prior to trying to figure out why some of these features were not working, the Bluetooth controls only work for supported devices which include several iOS models. If you are using a non-iOS device or an unsupported iPhone model, don’t expect all (or any) of the controls to work. For example, the listen-through button worked fine on my Galaxy SIII, but the volume controls did not. Frankly, according to their tech specs,  audio is only officially supported on iOS devices. However, I was able to quickly and easily pair and stream to many devices including several different phones, a tablet and my laptop.

I’m never too terribly far from whatever my audio source is when listening wirelessly, but it is always good to have a strong, reliable signal. Inherent, it seems to many wireless headsets (Bluetooth or any other technology like infrared)  is a shaky signal with periodic drops or hiccups. This makes them completely unusable for critical listening and negates the concept of “high end wireless”. Many people can get accustomed to a periodic drop, like those from AirPlay devices, but they drive me mad. Fortunately, the UE 9000′s offer a steady, strong connection with a range of about 50′ or so. After listening wirelessly for dozens of hours over two weeks, I haven’t experienced one single drop.

[UE 9000 with travel case]

Build Quality & Accessories The materials, build quality and “feel” are all extremely high end. Brushed aluminum, rich leather, glossy surfaces and nicely trimmed with just a touch of blue to match the headphone cable all make for quite a striking look without being over-the-top. Their design allows for a nice fit without any shake or wobble even when actively moving around. It is impossible to definitively predict how a pair of headphones, especially with heavy use, will stand up over time. However, I’d be shocked if these don’t last for many, many years. The headphones come with a molded, zippered, hard travel case, USB charging cord, USB AC adapter, headphone cord with mic and controls and a 1/4″ headphone jack.

Drawbacks

  • Specifically designed for iOS devices so you won’t be able to use for phone calls with other devices and not all the Bluetooth controls will work
  • It would be nice to use the headphones wirelessly without the active noise-cancelling feature when in an environment that doesn’t necessitate it.
  • The glossy black earcups are prone to smudges.
  • The $399 price is a premium price for a premium product. However, the UE 6000 offers the same outstanding sound and build quality but without the Bluetooth wireless compatibility and is priced at $199.

Final Thoughts Make no mistake, these are not simply “wireless” headphones. The sound quality IS outstanding over Bluetooth, but most importantly, these are outstanding headphones in their own right- wireless or not. Rich, lush, open and airy sound with extraordinary detail and plenty of power coupled with a stylish, modern design and extreme comfort. There’s likely not a better Bluetooth headphone out there that offers the sound quality that the UE 9000′s do. Logitech has added yet another winner to their Ultimate Ears line by creating one of the most versatile headphones available. Offering  Bluetooth, wired, noise-canceling or not, built in mics for iOS, rechargeable batteries and headphones good for both travel and home, this is a pair that is a Jack of all trades- and fortunately does them all extraordinarily well.

Winner from Last Week First off, I’ve had scores of people get back to me that ordered the HiFiMAN HM-101 after our review two weeks ago and everyone seems to love it as much as I did. Likewise, I’ve had a bunch of people that ordered the Monoprice earbuds from last week and couldn’t believe the cost/value relationship. Anyway, congrats “Kurt”, we have a pair of them to ship off to you so you can check them out yourself. Please get in touch with me with any of the contact info below to arrange for shipping.

Grateful Dead To Issue Previously Unreleased Show on Vinyl – Record Store Day Black Friday Offerings Also Include

0
0

Record Store Day has been expanded to the day after Thanksgiving, aka Black Friday, for the third year in a row. Once again the event’s organizers have enlisted many of our favorite acts to participate and the extensive list of exclusive offerings looks great. Of particular note for our readers is an exciting release from the Grateful Dead. Dubbed “Live at Winterland,” Rhino will put out the previously unreleased May 30, 1971 Dead show mastered from the original two-track reels on 180g vinyl. Only 7,500 copies will be available of the double-LP which features liner notes from noted Dead scholar Blair Jackson.

The gig took place just one day after the famed “Acid Punch Show” in which 39 attendees were hospitalized for treatment of “bad trips” stemming from LSD-spiked apple juice that was given out at the venue. For just $2 those hitting the show on the 30th were able to see openers New Riders of The Purple Sage, R.J. Fox and James and The Good Bros. as well as two fairly mellow sets from the Grateful Dead. For many years only an audience tape of the festivities circulated until 2008 when Charlie Miller shared a soundboard recording that contained most of the second set. Highlights include an outrageous 17-minute Turn On Your Lovelight, a rare take on The Rub and an outstanding Morning Dew.

That’s not the only Black Friday release you’ll want to get. There’s a 7″ picture disc featuring David Bowie’s Jean Genie complete with a version of the tune from BBC’s Top Of The Pops, My Morning Jacket’s performance of It Makes No Difference by The Band with Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard from this year’s Newport Folk Festival on 10″ vinyl, the 20th anniversary edition of Nirvana’s b-side compilation Incesticide containing Kurt Cobain’s lyric sheet art and Wood - a DVD from Widespread Panic in a deluxe package that incorporates nine live tracks, band interviews and more from the band’s all-acoustic Wood Tour.

Don’t sleep on the first vinyl release from the recently unveiled Frank Zappa remasters – a 7″ of Why Don’cha Do Me Right and Big Leg Emma from the 1989 Absolutely Free CD reissue. Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention a 12″ dubbed “Jazz” from Tenacious D that features a 11:43 song which promises to make us “Forget everything you ever thought you knew about Tenacious D.” We can’t wait to hear what that’s all about.

Head over to the Record Store Day site for the full list of Black Friday releases as well as a searchable database of participating record stores across the country. Support your local indie record store!

Weekly RecommNeds: Royal Baths / Hopewell / Cate Le Bon

Feed your head…

Royal Baths: Better Luck Next Life

Seems like every week a new-to-me psych-rock band bubbles up onto my radar and, well, I just can’t resist. Earlier this year, this album entered the rotation and, with its dark-energy, guitar-mayhem intensity, it didn’t leave for quite a while. Bluesy garage rock riffs couple with dreamy vocals belie the Royal Baths roots in San Francisco and their relocation to Brooklyn. It’s evil, but not angry — play it loud.

Hopewell: Another Music

Hopewell is one of the NYC bands that’s toiled in the trenches for years and years, on and off. It’s a labor of love and it shows in the music which adds early indie-pop sensibility to the loose, lava lamp pastiche. Their newest release is an easy-on-the-ears EP, five tracks of space rock, spanning mood and energy, evoking the Flaming Lips, Janes Addiction and beyond. My favorite track is The King & the Canary, a slow-burner that carries the confidence of a band that’s been around the block and the adventurous spirit of a band that’s just begun.

Cate Le Bon: Cyrk

Sometimes “psychedelic” can just mean “weird” and, in the best way possible, that’s the best way to describe the Welshwoman’s sound. Yes, Wales, the land that brings you words like mwynhewch and bwyd also brings you the off-kilter, prog-pop-freak-folky music of Cyrk. All that being said, there’s an endearing sweetness with an hypnotic magnetism that’s tough to resist. And if, like me, you find yourself smitten with Cyrk, there’s more: a companion EP (Cyrk II) was released recently.

Video: Bon Iver – Beth/Rest

The latest self-directed video (with Dan Huiting) from Bon Iver must’ve caught Justin Vernon in the midst of an Alphaville phase. Both the song and the content have heavy sentimental ’80s notes. In fact, if you’re bored, turn on the picture for this video while muting the sound, and then crank up the audio for Forever Young. It’s a dead ringer in the best way.

Trey Anastasio Unveils New Guitar and New Band

In preparation for his fall tour, which begins tomorrow in Detroit, Trey Anastasio rehearsed with his TAB ensemble at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, New Jersey. While there, the Phish front man talked with promoter Bowery Presents about the process of making his latest solo album – Traveler. Not only does he discuss the process of making the album, we also see him layering delicious loops while utilizing a Fender Jaguar guitar. Will he be using this guitar on the tour?

Trey Anastasio’s Thoughts On Traveler

There’s another great clip that The Bowery Presents shared. This one finds the newest iteration of TAB rehearsing the opening track from Traveler – Corona. Corona has yet to be performed publicly.

You’ll notice that Trey uses his Fender during this tune.

Bob Weir and Sammy Hagar To Guest At Veterans Benefit

This Friday, a little-known band called The Mooncussers, which is led by CNBC senior economics reporter Steve Liesman, and mostly plays covers, will perform at the recently re-opened Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, Calif. along with special guests Bob Weir, Jeff Chimenti and Sammy Hagar. The show is a benefit for wounded veterans via the Coming Home Project.

[Photo From Last Night via MattBusch28 on Instagram]

Liesman and Weir met each other at a Dead show in the ’80s and recently reconnected when the reporter profiled Weir for a couple of CNBC stories. Bobby, who is a partner in Sweetwater Music Hall, was happy to lend a hand in the name of veterans. Tickets aren’t cheap as they run $200 unless you’re a veteran with Military ID in which case they’ll set you back $75.

Speaking of Weir and Sweetwater, the club hosted a surprise birthday party for the short-short loving rhythm guitarist last night. According to Jambands.com, Hagar and Phil Lesh were among the 100 Weir friends and family in attendance to watch Jackie Greene and his band perform. Weir, Lukas Nelson and Chimenti also played at points during the three-set show.

Preview: Trey Anastasio TAB Fall Tour

0
0

Please welcome our newest contributor, Robert Janoski, to preview this month’s TAB Tour.

For the 14th year of his namesake solo group’s existence, Trey Anastasio and his TAB ensemble will embark on a nine-show mini tour starting tomorrow at The Fillmore in Detroit, Michigan. In 2012, the early months that in 2010 and 2011 were reserved for TAB tours were given over to Trey’s symphony outings. These shows revealed nuances to Trey’s Phish and solo compositions unique to orchestral settings, and had fans pleasantly surprised. However, most still yearned for the frontman to direct his energy once again to the more accessible and cathartic Trey Anastasio Band.

With this extended eleven-month layoff period between the band’s last performance, energy is expectedly high leading up to these shows. Fans have crossed off the days until the 18th in anticipation of hearing debuts from Anastasio’s new album Traveler; four out of the ten songs on Traveler have yet to been performed publicly. Couple these reasons with the announcement detailing this iteration of TAB’s lineup and you’d have to be jaded not to feel some curiosity as to what these gigs will produce. Joining Anastasio for the tour are TAB mainstays in Natalie Cressman, Jennifer Hartswick, Russ Lawton, Tony Markellis and Ray Paczkowski, the new face of James Casey from Lettuce (who will be replacing Russell Remington on tenor saxophone) and a dearly missed percussionist in Cyro Baptista.

Here’s a pre-tour breakdown of the stops TAB will make on their autumnal sprint.

October 18th, 2012: The Fillmore – Detroit, MI (Capacity: 2,200)

Kicking off their run in the Midwest with a return to the Motor City, the band will set up shop at the Fillmore. Previous TAB outings in the city were all located at different rooms, making this first stop one of four in the slated nine which the group has not played. Almost ninety years old, the building was a movie theater before renovation gave it new life as a highlight music destination in Detroit. The band will look to write a new history at this unassuming yet eclectic Live Nation venue.

October 19th, 2012: Chicago Theatre – Chicago, IL (Capacity: 3,600; SOLD OUT)

[via Chicago Theatre Facebook]

The first of two Madison Square Garden-owned theaters on the tour, the historic Chicago Theatre is also the largest on the list: it weighs in at a capacity of 3,600. Opened in 1921, the vaulted ceilings and iconic signage saw much downfall and neglect before recent revitalization efforts brought the venue back to prominence. TAB has graced the stage here three times, split between 2003 and 2006. Although this theater fits double what some of the other tour stops can, it remains the only show outside of New England to sell out in advance (as of yet). Don’t mistakenly think you’re at another symphony show when you view the impeccably lavish interior.

October 20th, 2012: LC Pavilion – Columbus, OH (Capacity: 2,400)

Trey Anastasio @ LC Pavilion 2011 – Harry Hood

Working their way east, the group will next stop in Ohio. This site was previously known as the PromoWest Pavilion way back in 2003 when Vida Blue played there. After the renaming, TAB performed at the newly dubbed LC only once, during their early months tour last year. Oddly enough, both the stop in 2011 and the upcoming show will have been during cold seasons. While the band will perform on the smaller inside stage, the choice of this ambidextrous indoor/outdoor LC seems somewhat of an out of place room for a chilly fall tour. Nevertheless, Ohio fans will not want to miss a show in this unusual venue.

October 22nd, 2012: Sherman Theater – Stroudsburg, PA (Capacity: 1,800)

Following the Midwest jaunt and a travel day, the band will head to the Northeast for a quick pause in Pennsylvania. The Sherman is fairly distanced from the urban centers of the state which TAB normally focuses on, and indeed neither they nor any other Trey outfit have ever performed there. Nevertheless, this follower receives the Sherman warmly, grasping every chance to forgo more typical Tower Theatre and Electric Factory shows. Those that make it to the newly reopened (2004) Sherman undeniably will enjoy the suburban environment and fall foliage of Stroudsburg.

October 23rd, 2012: The National – Richmond, VA (Capacity: 1,500)

Moving suddenly down south for a brief stint before a complete 180, TAB will halt at the National, a room with both history and the advantage of a superbly fresh sound system on its side. Southern fans will likely forget the fact that they only received one true show this year after hearing a concert in this crisp-sounding space. The National is also the most intimate of the tour’s choices, fitting a mere 1,500 people. With four years separating their only previous performance here, locally grown excitement will no doubt be high for this tour midpoint.

October 24th, 2012: The Fillmore Silver Spring – Silver Spring, MD (Capacity: 2,000)

A turn back north will bring the band to another Fillmore, and another venue they have only played once before. Compared to others on this list, this location is fairly new. While it lacks in history, this Fillmore makes up for that in its simplistic style. The sleek edges of its interior design make for a room with great sightlines. The stage stretches out very widely, so be sure to avoid the tiny balcony to get a spot up close for this one.

October 26th, 2012: The Beacon Theatre – New York, NY (Capacity: 2,900; SOLD OUT)

In Anastasio’s current backyard of New York City, the final sold out triad of northeast shows will begin, after another travel day, at the Beacon. This locale has a strong and recent connection to Trey and the material he will be supporting this fall. Last December, The National invited Anastasio to the stage during their show here. Additionally, the indie rockers went into the studio on Traveler. A literal national landmark known for its acoustics and premiere setting, the Beacon hosted Phish three times way back in 1994, although this October will mark TAB’s debut here.

October 27th, 2012: Orpheum Theatre – Boston, MA (Capacity: 2,700; SOLD OUT)

Trey Leads Percussion Parade Through Orpheum – 2006

Another storied TAB venue will come next in the Orpheum; they have played here four times dating back to 2001. This early show should be sought out by diehards for two reasons: it marks the debut of twelve original songs, and it is the first of TAB’s horn-assisted performances. If venue lore intrigues you, then you’ll want to choose this stop to cross off your list. Although many reconstructions are mixed in, the Orpheum has a connective history dating back to 1852. Somehow we think the crowds were different back then.

October 28th, 2012: The Capitol Theatre – Port Chester, NY (Capacity: 1,800; SOLD OUT)

[Arena-Sized Light Show at The Cap]

The exclamatory final blowout of the tour could scarce take place at a richer locale. Originally a playhouse opened in 1926, the Capitol Theatre saw an influx famous acts (including Phish) as it operated as a concert hall from the 1970’s to 1990’s. After dissolving off the grid, it recently underwent upgrades from Brooklyn Bowl owner Peter Shapiro, and reopened with a new look, as well as new sound, just this year. Launching into the next decade of concerts, the Capitol hosted a recent and widely publicized show including, among others, The Roots, Bob Weir and Trey Anastasio. Losing no time in playing the glorious Capitol himself, Anastasio and TAB will round out their tour in Port Chester.

We cannot wait to see what these shows will produce. Tickets are still available for some stops on TAB’s eleven-day excursion.

Bloggy Goodness: Professor ?uestlove

If he wasn’t busy enough with his many gigs, ?uestlove is going to now have to find time to grade papers, as The Roots drummer has revealed that he will be teaming up with Universal Music Enterprises vice president Harry Weinger to teach a course titled Classic Albums, next semester at the Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. According to Billboard, the two credit course, “will focus on the concept of what it means for something to be called classic or seminal, as well as take a close look at the music, lyrics, production, business aspects — such as promotion and marketing — that informed the release and reception of the album, and try to provide a context as to why these albums have stood time.” Albums expected to be covered will include Sly & The Family Stone’s Stand!, Aretha Franklin’s Lady Soul, Led Zeppelin’s IV, Prince’s Dirty Minds and the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique.

Finally, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame will celebrate one of the pioneers of the genre, as they will honor Chuck Berry with a new exhibit Roll Over Beethoven: The Life and Music of Chuck Berry, and a week long celebration of his career culminating with an all-star tribute concert at the State Theater in Cleveland. Opening today, which also happens to be the legendary guitar player’s 86th birthday, the multimedia exhibit will include Berry’s 1958 recording contract with Chess Records, a vest he wore at the Toronto Rock and Roll Festival in 1969 and a handbill from a 1961 show in Jamaica.

Umphrey’s McGee To Make Beacon Theatre Debut in January / Unveils Exhaustive Statistics and Setlist Database Site

0

Nearly 15 years to the day of their first show Umphrey’s McGee will play the prestigious Beacon Theatre in New York City on Friday, January 18. The word came down as per an onstage announcement at UM’s Capitol Theatre show last night.  This will mark the band’s Beacon debut, a venue that will give LD Jefferson Waful a wonderful canvas to paint. Umphrey’s was formed on the campus of Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana in the late ’90s and now have nearly 1,800 shows under their belts. A formal announcement is expected soon.

In other Umphrey’s news, the band has launched an extensive setlist and statistics database dubbed “allthings.umphreys.com” which will allow users to not only track what the band has played, but if they register, track their own personal Umphrey’s statistics.

An announcement about the site details some of the other things you can do…

Search by set lists, songs, venue, cities, and more. Compile your own personal stats to uncover the in’s and out’s of your Umphrey’s live experiences. Reference show notes, versions with improvisation, bustout potential and leave reviews on your favorite shows. There’s even a mobile site built specifically for you to reference at shows or anywhere on the go.

We saw some of the work that went into the herculean task of building this site and entering the data, so to say this was “years in the making” isn’t an exaggeration. Mazel Tov!

Is RAQ Coming BAQ? Facebook Page Hints At Reunion

Since the members of ’00s jam act RAQ went their separate ways in 2008 they’ve gotten back together for the sporadic gig, the most recent of which took place last summer the 2011 Big Up Festival. Guitarist Chris Michetti has found success as a now full-time member of Conspirator while keyboardist Todd Stoops has been touring relentlessly with the impressive funk-fusion band Kung Fu. Yesterday, the group’s Facebook Page came alive with an exciting update…

For me, I finally saw the quartet live in late 2006 and by the time I realized how much I enjoyed their shred-heavy sound they had broken up. RAQ’s Carbohydrates Are The Enemy hits the same musical emotions that songs such as Reba, Glory and Morning Dew hit; while Walking In Circles is just a cleverly-crafted rock song and Sweet Cream Butter has the perfect tinge of humor to break things up in the middle of one of their sets. However they didn’t draw huge crowds, despite their massive talent and inventive sound. We have no idea what the next era for RAQ will involve, if indeed there is one, but we wouldn’t mind the band getting another chance to show the world what they got.

We’ll keep you posted on any future update, but for now let’s take a look at a fine version of the aforementioned Carbohydrates Are The Enemy from 2005 complete with Dixie teases…

Complete Last Waltz Organizer Discusses The All-Star Gala

Back on Monday we broke the news that a concert dubbed “The Complete Last Waltz” was set to take place at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco on November 24th featuring a slew of our favorite musicians. Not only were Joe Russo, Marco Benevento, Scott Metzger, Sam Cohen, Alecia Chakour and the Antibalas Horns among those on the bill, but the event is also expected to include performances from cast members of TV shows such as Mad Men.

While we were able to dig up some details on what fans can expect at The Complete Last Waltz, we still had a few questions about the event. So before tickets go on sale tomorrow, we wanted to share our conversation with the show’s organizer, Ramie Egan, who was kind enough to answer our queries.

HIDDEN TRACK: What made you decide to put this event together?

RAMIE EGAN: This idea has been a long time coming. While it might seem like this was sparked by Levon’s passing, it wasn’t. It’s been in the works for over a year. It was born out of a “wouldn’t it be awesome to see this show” type declaration. Every artist I’ve ever know was greatly influenced by this concert. Not just The Band. This concert. In whatever format they encountered it. Beyond that, there was a lot of great music and interesting readings that happened that night that people don’t know. Now they will.

HT: How did you figure out which musicians would play?

RE: Well, most of them I am proud and humbled to call friends. I used to work in the live music “business” and forged some very strong bonds with phenomenal people. They also just so happen to be some of the most talented musicians walking the planet. The whole thing has kind of snowballed into “friends of friends” and beyond. Sam Cohen from Yellowbirds and Apollo Sunshine is the Music Director, and he has the herculean task of taking 30+ remarkable chefs and making one delicious dinner!

HT: Will there be a “house band?”

RE: The answer is yes. And no. There is no way that one band can do what The Band did that night. And were not trying to “recreate” we’re going to “re-present.” But to answer your question, there will be a core line-up that have been practicing together already. People are going to be dazzled by the passion, and virtuosity. The first full rehearsals are in Brooklyn later this month. I’ll post some rehearsal footage on our Facebook page.

HT: Is this a benefit?

RE: You can probably tell from the ticket prices that this is not a benefit. That is not to say that there will not be beneficiary’s though. A portion of the profits are going to go to a fund that will donate to preserve Levon’s Barn, as well as Doctors Without Borders. But as I said before, this is not a reaction to Levon’s passing or to raise funds for the barn necessarily. If it were the prices would certainly not be as reasonable.

HT: Do you expect more artists to be added as we move closer to the event?

RE: Yes! As a matter of fact there have been two additions since we went public on the 15th. But I can’t announce them just yet. We’ve started getting calls from managers who want their Artists to be involved. There will be several additions. I’d get my tickets before they happen!

HT: Why the Warfield?

RE: Quite simply it’s the best venue in San Francisco. And that’s saying a lot. And of course The Winterland (the original venue) is no longer. The people at Goldenvoice have been remarkably accommodating and supportive of the idea. AND they have a dressing room downstairs that on the door simply says JERRY.

Tickets for The Complete Last Waltz go on sale tomorrow at 10AM PT.

Audio: Trey Anastasio Interview From XRT – Anastasio Confirms Phish About To Start A Record “Pretty Soon”

Earlier today Chicago’s WXRT aired an interview with Phish front man Trey Anastasio. XRT host Frank E. Lee chatted with Big Red about his new album, his creative process and much more. Of particular interest for Phish fans, Anastasio confirmed that Phish plans to enter the recording studio soon. Trey also goes into detail about performing with symphonies earlier this year.

If you missed the 13-minute interview, we’ve got you covered…

Trey kicks off his fall tour tonight. Follow @OhKeePahBlog for reports.

Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon Plan “Get-Together” With Jon Fishman

A preview of acoustic guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke’s upcoming gig in Cambridge in the Boston Globe contains word that should excite fans of his two albums and multiple tours with Phish bassist Mike Gordon in the ’00s. Both Cactus and Kottke “confirmed plans for a get-together.” And get this, the pair will welcome a drummer none other than Jon Fishman himself into the collaboration.

Kottke released his last solo album, “Try and Stop Me,” in 2004, and his “Sixty Six Steps” collaboration with Gordon came out the following year. The recording dormancy may end as Kottke and Gordon both confirmed plans for a get-together that will include Phish drummer Jon Fishman. And while it seems natural to mix all of these veteran improvisers, both Kottke and Gordon spoke of the difficulties that occurred when the guitarist and bassist first met to jam.

“Leo is so complete by himself that the challenge for me was figuring out how to fit in,” Gordon says, which led him to seeing the music as freely as Kottke sees it. “Playing a standard bass line anchors a song, but in this case was not what was called for and was tethering the song. I had to be somewhat more free myself.”

What’s interesting is that Mike and Leo paired up with percussionist Neil Symonette for the recording of Sixty Six Steps and some gigs that followed but reverted to the duo format for their last extensive tour in 2005. That year Gordon told Jambands that the pair found it “more intimate” to perform as a duo.

Mike Gordon Responding To Question About Symonette Leaving The Mix: Well, Leo’s ears are very sensitive [due to a freak childhood firecracker accident and a stint in the Naval reserves]. Its not really the volume of the drums because he had earplugs in and we limited Neil to using percussion. It was more of the idea that it made it into a busier, bigger thing to contend with. We had some great gigs as a trio, but at this point, we’re finding that its more intimate to play just the two of us. There is something really special about a duo, though Neil was really great on the album.

After not hearing anything from the Kottke/Gordon collaboration since the aforementioned Sixty Six Steps and lengthy tour in 2005, we hope this “get-together” leads to an “album” and a “tour.”

The newest edition of Trey Anastasio’s ever-changing solo band made its debut tonight as TAB Fall Tour 2012 got underway at The Fillmore in Detroit. As hinted at yesterday, Big Red did unveil a new guitar, using a Fender Jaguar at points during the show. Trey’s latest solo album, Traveler, came out just two days ago and unsurprisingly the setlist was filled with tunes from the LP including the debuts of Corona, Scabbard, Architect and Traveler. Multi-instrumentalist James Casey of Lettuce made his first appearance with the band and the evening also saw the return of percussionist Cyro Baptista.

In addition to many tunes from Traveler, the tour-opening setlist contained a nice mix of TAB classics such as Push On ‘Til The Day, Simple Twist Up Dave, Drifting, Jibboo and Sand with a handful of deeper cuts such as Words to Wanda, Wherever You Find It (only the 2nd one since 2007) and Curlew’s Call as well as the Traveler tunes. Here’s the full setlist…

Set 1: Corona, Push On ‘Til the Day, Words to Wanda, Simple Twist Up Dave, Burlap Sack and Pumps, Cayman Review, Scabbard, Frost, Drifting, Wherever You Find It, Gotta Jibboo > Goodbye Head

Set 2: The Land of Nod, Money, Love and Change, Let Me Lie, Curlew’s Call, Pigtail, Clint Eastwood, Valentine, Architect, Small Axe, Sand, Tuesday, Traveler

Encore: The Devil Went Down to Georgia, First Tube
