There’s been lots of talk about just where and when The Rolling Stones will play later this year to celebrate their 50th Anniversary and it looks like we’re on the cusp of an announcement according to a report from Roger Friedman on Showbiz 411.

Friedman reports that tickets for a pair of shows at the 02 Arena in London on Nov. 26th and 27th as well as a pair of shows at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on December 15th and 16th will go on sale this weekend or even as soon as tomorrow. As for the pair of shows in Brooklyn that Billboard reported on, Friedman says they are still in the works but not confirmed yet. Tickets are expected to go onsale through Ticketmaster. Good luck getting your hands on these valuable ducats.

Watch Page McConnell Team Up With Tenacious D On Flash, Wonderboy and Beatles Abbey Road Medley

Way back on September 28th, 2001 Tenacious D’s first big, national tour visited Higher Ground which was then in Winooski, Vermont. They were touring in support of their self-titled debut album in which they were backed by Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters on drums and guitar, keyboardist Page McConnell of Phish, guitarist Warren Fitzgerald of The Vandals and bassist Steven Shane McDonald of Redd Kross. Therefore it wasn’t a big shock when McConnell joined Kyle and JB that night.

Page sat in on Flash, Wonderboy (a tune he played with Tenacious D on the album) as well as the D’s brillant cover of the medley the ends The Beatles’ Abbey Road LP. Thanks to YouTuber cleantones we can watch Page’s entire sit-in with Tenacious D complete with SBD soundtrack…

Medeski, Martin and Wood Jam With Bill Evans In Ridgefield

HT faves Medeski, Martin and Wood’s acoustic tour visited The Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, Connecticut last night where the trio invited saxophonist Bill Evans to jam with them. Evans has played with the band a number of times in the past and will join them again on December 14th at the Blue Note as part of MMW’s residency at the famed New York City venue.

Videographer extraordinaire MKDevo was on hand last night and captured over 20 minutes of outstanding footage featuring Evans’ sit-in with his two cameras. We especially like the part where Medeski busts out his Hohner Claviola for one of the more melodic sections of the jam. Check it out…

Thanks To Jimmy Herring We Got Mountain Jam Back – Watch Herring/Trucks Version of The Allmans Tear Up The Instrumental

The year 2000 was one of the most tumultuous in the history of the Allman Brothers Band as in May of that year original member Dickey Betts was relieved of his duties, supposedly by fax. At first it was reported that Betts was suspended from the band, but that eventually became a full-on divorce. The remaining members of the band had a full summer tour booked and brought fellow southern rocker Jimmy Herring in to fill Betts’ hard-to-fill shoes for the lengthy three-month run.

When Herring took the stage with the Allman Brothers Band for the first show of the tour on June 16th, 2000 in Virginia Beach, Virginia the group opened with a song they hadn’t performed since the ’70s – Mountain Jam. The song was a centerpiece of the Allman’s live sets dating back to 1969 after, legend has it, they heard the Grateful Dead incorporate some of Donovan’s First There Is A Mountain into a jam. Mountain Jam gave each member of the ABB a chance to shine and there are a number of riveting takes on the lengthy instrumental from every incarnation of the band through the Mid ’70s.

For some reason Mountain Jam was put on ice and none of the reunited versions of the Allman Brothers Band featuring Dickey Betts touched the tune, with the exception of a small excerpt weaved into Jessica in the ’90s. Yet the first song the group performed upon Betts departure was the long lost Mountain Jam. Herring’s lightning-fast guitar skills were on full display as he generally took the first solo in the song which was played at all but a handful of shows that summer. Jimmy left the band after that tour and was replaced by Warren Haynes, yet Mountain Jam has remained in the active repertoire ever since. For a look at just how good Mountain Jam was during the summer of 2000 with Jimmy Herring and Derek Trucks on guitar, check out these videos featuring 27 amazing minutes of improv…

While The Slip will always be near and dear to a lot of our readers’ hearts, we’ve really fallen hard for Andrew and Brad Barr’s new Americana-infused project, aptly named The Barr Brothers. Back in May, the Montreal-based act were invited by the fantastic music blog I Am Fuel, You Are Friends to record an intimate live set for their ongoing Chapel Session series at the La Foret Adobe Chapel in Colorado Springs while the band was in town for the Meadowgrass Music Festival. The four song set, which was just posted and can be downloaded here, primarily focused on material from their self-titled debut, and also included a cover of Neil Young’s Don’t Let It Bring You Down.

Let’s check out this gorgeous rendition of Old Mythologies…

Allie’s Adventures in Eating: Seventh Avenue, Park Slope, Snacks

I had the brilliant idea to take my husband for a stroll along Park Slope, Brooklyn’s, Seventh Avenue last weekend. It was a gorgeous, fall Saturday–we were long overdue for a walk around the neighborhood. Predictably, the walk ended up turning into a snacking tour.

Gochujang Burger Deluxe

Pino's La Forcetta Grandma Slice

Sweet Melissa's Sweet Corn and Bacon Chowder

Zito's Fried Ravioli

Zito's Potato Fritters

  1. Cinnamon SnailGouchujang Burger Deluxe with Korean Paste, Sauteed Kimchi, Pickled Daikon and Leeks, Black Sesame Gomasio, Arugula and Sriracha mayo on Grilled Focaccia: Chris and I thought this vegan food truck knocked their burger out of the park. Each bite generated a different variation of a Korean flavor explosion in our mouths, starting with the sauteed kimchi. Arugula added a nice, bitter contrast to the spicy sandwich. We’ve recommended the Cinnamon Snail to everyone we know, as a result–we hope they come back to Park Slope soon.
  2. Pino’s La Forcetta, Grandma Slice: Chris was a bigger fan of this slice than I was. The crust was light and airy, which I enjoyed, but I found the sauce rather bland.
  3. Sweet Melissa, Sweet Corn and Bacon Chowder: Given this patisserie’s reputation for having decadent desserts, I was hoping their chowder–using fresh corn from the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket–would be rich and creamy. It was good, but not great. The consistency wasn’t as thick as I wished for a chowder. Chris wanted more smoky flavor from the bacon, where I thought that was just right.
  4. Zito’s Sandwich Shoppe, Sicilian Potato Fritters, stuffed with Mozzarella, Local Ricotta, Herbs and Pecorino Cheese. Served with Marinara Dipping Sauce: These fritters are a mashed potato lover’s dream. They are relatively light, given the ingredients. I would love to see a rich, brown gravy offered for dipping.
  5. Zito’s Sandwich Shoppe, Buttermilk dredged Pastosa Ricotta Ravioli, Seasoned Bread Crumbs, Sea Salt & Pecorino. Served with Marinara Dipping Sauce: They are pillowy, soft, flavorful, fried pouches of heaven, for which marinara sauce pairs perfectly. I would recommend the fried ravioli to anyone in a heartbeat.

After our tour of Seventh Avenue, we hiked around Prospect Park, eventually circling back near Grand Army Plaza. Chris noticed that some food trucks were parked out front, so we had to indulge in one final snack.

Phil's Steaks Provolone Steak

Chris had been looking forward to trying a Phil’s Steak Provolone Steak for weeks after hearing rave reviews. I’m not the biggest cheesesteak fan, but we were in agreement on this–the flavors were fantastic. The steak was layered with spices and the onions sweet.

Taking a snacking tour around Seventh Avenue in Park Slope was a great way to spend a crisp, autumn Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn. This neighborhood is really starting to come into its own from a culinary perspective. More and more restaurants are opening here, because rents in Manhattan and Williamsburg have become ridiculously expensive. I’m sure we will embark on many more of these snacking tours before it is too cold to do so.

Full Show Friday: Led Zeppelin @ Knebworth 1979

Back before Coachella decided to expand to two weekends featuring the same bands earlier this year, the Knebworth Festival took place over two Saturdays in August 1979 boasting a lineup with headliners Led Zeppelin backed by five bands that played both nights and one slot which was filled by a different act at the two events (Fairport Convention the first Saturday and The New Barbarians on the second one). According to Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant over 400,000 music fans attended Knebworth ’79, among the biggest crowds ever for the legendary rockers. It wound up being LZ’s last performances in the U.K. until the “reunion show” in 2007.

There’s no doubt these weren’t the best Led Zeppelin performances of all-time, as the band had only played a pair of warmup shows since a 1977 North American Tour, but the second show certainly had plenty of standout moments. Zep tackled most of the best songs in their repertoire and debuted a pair of tunes the soon-to-be-released In Through The Out Door LP. Both shows were recorded professionally, though it took until the release of the Led Zeppelin DVD in 2003 for any of the footage to be officially released. However the full shows make the rounds in bootleg circles, and we came across the entire second show from August 11, 1979. Kick off your weekend with this…

Marco Benevento TigerFace Tour Hits Boston

A month ago, keyboardist Marco Benevento began his tour in support of his new album, TigerFace, at Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads. Last night, starting in Cambridge, Mass. at T.T. the Bear’s, Benevento and his band (Dave Dreiwitz, best known as the bassist for Ween and drummer Andy Borger, who has played with Tom Waits among others) kicked off the second leg of the TigerFace Tour. From the first notes, it was clear that the band was already in their comfort zone and at times seemingly ecstatic to be ripping through tracks from TigerFace. Effortless communication led to deep grooves, audacious jams and stunning moments in an enthralling two hour set of music that had the crowd transfixed.

[Marco Benevento]

Psychedelic and trance-like jams, created with a huge array of pedals, effects, loops and other gadgets were at times hypnotic on such numbers as Greenpoint. Other times, the swirly acid jazz, with hooks so sharp it was impossible not to be jerked into the groove, had the crowd dancing in a wild frenzy. Benevento, lauded as one of the most exciting and vital figures in the experimental jazz scene, was on-point all night with high speed piano breaks, sultry melodies, uplifting grooves  and crisp execution that never wasted a single note. Despite plenty of improv in the power-jazz & straight out rock filled set, it all felt like it was moving in a purposeful direction. As was the case through much of TigerFace, Benevento’s extraordinary keyboard work shared the mix brilliantly with the bass and drums which were much bolder and in your face than on prior albums. This rich mix, with Benevento still clearly leading the way, led to a seemingly impossibly large soundstage for a trio.

Marco Benevento – Golden (My Morning Jacket Cover)

In a first for a Benevento album, a couple of tracks included vocals, such as Limbs of a Pine. These vocals were deftly weaved into last night’s take on the album opener with loops of the Kalmia Traver’s voice mixed right in. Benevento’s playful weirdness was highlighted during this song when each member took turns donning the large TigerFace headpiece while ripping through individual solos layered over the already infectious groove. Other highlights of the well received set included the hard charging Greenpoint from Between the Needles & Nightfall, fan-favorite Atari, the luscious, soaring jam-riddled Eagle Rock and the My Morning Jacker cover Golden.

The fiery passion that Benevento plays with, the great chemistry with his bandmates and the seamless confluence of jazz-rock, experimentalism, psychedelia and jam-rock is simply not to be missed. It should also be noted that Benevento’s band chemistry is made that much more impressive when you realize that he uses different members when playing dates on the West Coast. Benevento has the rare gift of being able to take the listener on a thrilling adventure –  playing songs, which may be new to the audience’s ears, that seem hauntingly familiar and wildly fresh at the same time.

The Benevento Trio is one of the most thrilling and compelling acts, not only on the jazz scene, but on the music scene as a whole today. With plenty of dates left on the tour, we strongly encourage any music lovers to make a point of catching one of the Band’s remaining shows. Upcoming dates include performances in Philadelphia, Portsmouth,  Burlington and Athens.  Tonight the trio hits the Bowery Ballroom in New York, where they will be supported by Brooklyn-based Woodsman who also opened the Boston show. Another trio pushing the envelope with intricate guitar work, pedal effects, infectious grooves and transcendent jamming,  Woodsman’s psych-rock was a great compliment to Benevento’s set.

At 66 years of age Neil Young hasn’t lost his step. The legendary Canadian rocker has regrouped with his longtime backing band, Crazy Horse, this year to record two studio albums and embark on a multi-leg tour of the United States and Canada. After eight years apart, Young and the Horse have picked up where they left off with their feedback jam-heavy performances winning raves from both casual and fervent Neil fans. Dubbed “Alchemy” in a recent NeilYoung.com news item which hints that a documentary about the tour is in the works (as do these signs posted at Neil’s shows), Neil Young and Crazy Horse descended upon Zilker Park in Austin, Texas last night for a headlining set at Day Two of the ACL Fest.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Cinnamon Girl (Live at ACL Fest)

Despite their propensity to extend songs for 20 minutes or longer, Neil Young and Crazy Horse haven’t experimented much with setlists on the tour. For instance, all 13 Alchemy Tour shows have started with the six-song segment. The major exception takes place in the encore slot, where the group varies which “hit” or “hits” they’ll play. Young has filled that slot with fan-favorites such as Mr. Soul, Tonight’s The Night, Roll Another Number, Like A Hurricane and Cortez The Killer, leading up to last night’s festival set. Though there wasn’t an encore per se, Crazy Horse finished off their headlining set with the first Down By The River since March 9th, 2004 and Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black).

For those looking for audio of a full Neil Young and Crazy Horse set, you can download Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Global Citizen Festival performance straight from the TV feed in all its high-quality glory. As for Down By The River, it was over 15 minutes and potent as fuck. Take a listen.

Stormy Mondays: Bad Plus + Medeski, Martin & Wood

Earlier this fall two of the best jazz trios out there, The Bad Plus and Medeski, Martin & Wood, released new albums. The former’s studio effort, Made Possible, finds the band cutting through the sharp passages and beautiful moments we’ve come to expect from them, along with some branching beyond the purely acoustic aesthetic for the first time. The latter’s live album, Free Magic, is culled from an ’07 tour that found them eschewing their electric arsenal (or John’s anyway) for an all-acoustic show for the first time (for a full tour). Both releases are busy characterizing this autumn’s aural memories for me, and so we’ll turn to two full sets this week, one from each band, one new and one properly aged.

The first night of the relatively short tour in support of Free Magic found MMW in Fall River, a rather gloomy city perched on a hill, a city that boasts my favorite venue ever: The Narrows. The second floor of an old mill building, the Narrows is a warm, open, wooden space with pews for seating, views of the pier and an arching bridge above, and artists’ galleries in the back of the room. It is simply the coziest, best feeling room around, and as such it draws out spectacular performances. And recordings, like John Lynch’s capture of the night. Featured here is the first set, with its loose, open beginning, incredible versions of Illmoan and Down on Me, and a stunning take on Suspicious Minds to close.

From The Bad Plus comes a great set from a great tour: Paris from their first European outing. From the enticing lull of Film’s opening notes to the rollicking groove of Everywhere You Turn to the awesome Iron Man encore, it’s quintessential Bad Plus. The material and playing are so fresh and bright.

It’s a long one this week, so settle in and as always, enjoy!

Newport Folk Festival Organizers Poll Fans on Lineup Issue

$

The Newport Folk Fest is currently engaged in an enlightening and rather candid discussion of the effect a radius clause has on scheduling, promoting and announcing a festival such as it. In a series of rapid tweets coming from the fest’s official account @Newportfolkfest organizers are trying to gauge fan reaction to not being able to announce big name headliners for next year’s fest due to clauses already put in place by other festivals preventing acts from being promoted within a defined area (radius) of the other fest. Basically, Newport can either announce before the festival all of the artists slated to perform which would force them to avoid the radius clause’d “big name” acts, or have those well-known headliners but make no announcement of who they are before they take the stage. The Twitter account is asking for fans’ input and have been quick to respond to replies.

In all seriousness we may not announce the 2013 lineup until the day of the show

Let’s us explain a bit more… Due to our size & non-profit status we have a VERY limited budget every year. Meaning only bands who get “it”

Just hours before Neil Young and Crazy Horse were set to close out the second day of this past weekend’s Austin City Limits Music Festival at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, YouTube and festival organizers quietly added the headlining performance to its webcast schedule. The bombastic set included the first Crazy Horse take on the Neil Young classic Down By The River since 2004.

Tonight at AT&T Park in San Francisco, the local Giants will face off against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game Two of baseball’s National League Championship Series. Before the game, local legends Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead / Furthur will team up with Giants coach Tim Flannery to sing the National Anthem.

The trio last teamed up to sing the anthem at the first Grateful Dead Night at the same ballpark on August 9, 2011. Weir and Flannery also combined forces earlier this year at a benefit for Brian Stow, a Giants fan who was beaten outside of Dodger Stadium. Furthermore, Weir and Flannery sang the anthem at this year’s Grateful Dead Night with Jackie Greene. This evening’s game is scheduled to start at 8PM ET / 5PM PT.
