This past weekend the Jay-Z curated Made In America music festival took place on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art featuring an eclectic lineup that ranged from Pearl Jam to Janelle Monae to the newly reunited Run DMC to Hova himself. Famed director Ron “Richie Cunningham” Howard filmed the event for a forthcoming documentary, but we don’t need to wait for highlights from the fest as they’ve been uploaded through the MadeInAmericaFest YouTube channel.

Let’s start off with Monae’s cover of I Want You Back (Jackson 5)…

AURA 2013 Moves to Spirit of Suwannee, Reveals Headliners

The AURA Music and Arts Festival was created in 2010 by jamband/live-electronica fans for jamband/live-electronica fans and each year out the producers have expanded their offerings that hit at the intersection of those two genres. That will continue with the 2013 installment of AURA which will be held for the first time at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park (home to Wanee, Bear Creek, Magnoliafest and more) in Live Oak, Florida from February 15th – 17th.

Event organizers have announced the first four headlining acts for AURA ’13: The Heavy Pets, Conspirator, Perpetual Groove and Papadosio. The full lineup will be revealed this fall. A batch of $75 tickets will be put on sale this Monday, September 10th, through the festival’s website.

Video: David Byrne & St. Vincent – Who

In advance of the unlikely pair’s new album, David Byrne and St. Vincent revealed the first video for their collaborative project set to release on September 11th. Three years in the making, what started as a one-off charity collaboration developed into a full-scale catalog of material and a longstanding friendship. Based on this first track, it sounds like this project will bare some real musical fruit complete with lots of brass and funky syncopated rhythms. After all these years, Byrne hasn’t lost a step as his vocals sound almost identical to the way they did in his prime and even his dance moves still got it. It’ll be interesting to see how St. Vincent complements Byrne throughout the recording.

Gov’t Mule To Channel Jimi Hendrix on Halloween in Chicago

Beginning in 2007, Gov’t Mule has come up with a theme for each Halloween show the group has played. It started with Holy Haunted House in which the band covered Led Zeppelin’s Houses Of The Holy in its entirety and continued with tributes to Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and The Who. This year, the Mule will honor the music of Jimi Hendrix at Chicago’s Rivera Theatre on October 31.

The Mule has covered plenty of Hendrix in the past ranging from Machine Gun to Spanish Castle Magic to Third Stone From The Sun to Foxy Lady to any number of the traditional blues tunes that made up a large portion of The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s live repertoire. A pre-sale takes place at Noon CT today through the band’s ticketing site.

Here’s a look at themes from past Gov’t Mule Halloween shows…

2007 – Holy Haunted House (Led Zeppelin’s Houses Of The Holy)
2008 – Pink Floyd Tribute
2009 – Rolling Stones Tribute
2010 – The Who Tribute
2011 – Warren Haynes Band’s Sly and the Family Stone Tribute

Weekly RecommNeds: Jaill, Plants & Animals, Megaphonic Thrift

Shooting for something a little less, um, esoteric than the last two weeks, some music to sink your teeth into. Here are some great newish rock and roll albums: three great albums featuring three great bands from three different countries playing three distinct sounds.

Jaill: Traps

Sometimes all it takes is a catchy hook to get you going and Jaill’s 2nd full-length album on Sup Pop is teeming with them. This album from the Milwaukee rockers is the type of smart pop music that makes you wonder why you’ve never heard of them before (and if you have heard of them, why didn’t you tell me, and what else you been hiding?). Like an old school Milwaukee brew – nothing flashy, no gimmicks, just well-written era-bridging rock and roll music. Traps feels like the album of a band ready to break through. I’m psyched to check these guys out in NYC next week.

Plants and Animals: The End of That

Americana meets compositional excellence on the newest offering from Montreal’s Plants and Animals. The songs on this album breathe, unconstrained by the normal song conventions, yet with the subtle simplicity of folk. Great songs, played perfectly from top to bottom, this is music that was painstakingly crafted and assembled with care…and it shows. Two minute ditties intermingle with 6+ minute journeys with ease. Sometimes an album and a sound just hit your personal sweet spot, and The End of the That is right there, one of my favorite albums of the year.

The Megaphonic Thrift: The Megaphonic Thrift

Wall of sound guitar rock, Norwegian style. Apparently this is a “supergroup” from Norway, but regardless of their background, this self-titled release is {{Norwegian for super}}. In-your-face overlapping guitars flip between rocking intensity and swirling brain candy with occasional sweet boy-girl harmonies to fill in the gaps.

Jam Cruise 11 Adds Nathan Moore and Brock Butler

The organizers of Jam Cruise have just announced that troubadour Nathan Moore and Perpetual Groove front man Brock Butler have just been added to the lineup for Jam Cruise 11. For those that haven’t attended Jam Cruise in the past, this bit of news might not seem like a big deal, but for those who have – this is totally a big deal. Why? Because Brock and Nathan are a huge part of what makes Jam Cruise so special as the pair each hold court in their respective locales on the boat.

Brock Butler – Naive Melody

If you’ve followed my stories from the boat over the past three years, you know how fond I am of each performers’ willingness to play with whomever wants to jam and whatever cruisers want to hear. These musicians don’t care about what the schedule says, they realize how much money attendees have laid out and will do whatever they can to provide the once-in-a-lifetime musical experience that keep cruisers coming back year after year. If it’s 5AM, you can bet Moore will be rocking out at “The Spot,” while Butler will be playing a heady mix of covers and originals near the pool for a group of fans hanging on every note. Kudos to Cloud 9 Adventures for realizing Nathan and Brock’s value.

Phish Fans Love Dick’s

If the inspired playing and stimulating song selection wasn’t enough proof that Phish (@phish) loves playing Dick’s Sporting Goods Park just outside Denver in Commerce City, Colorado, the band made it clear before and during the You Enjoy Myself the first night of the three night run.

Prior to YEM’s start, keyboardist Page McConnell thanked their fans and commented that, “We are so happy to be back in this place, thank you guys so much…We love Dick’s, we do,” leading to a crowd chant of “We love Dick’s” and a vocal jam that included reciting of, “Page loves Dick’s,” “Mike loves Dick’s,” “Fish loves Dick’s,” “Trey loves Dick’s” and “we all love Dick’s.” The band’s obvious love for Dick’s was matched by their fans’ love for Dick’s, made apparent  by several  tweets from those in attendance and those webcasting who expressed love for Dick’s. The three nights prompted many “best of” tweets from fans who clearly loved their Dick’s experience.

Last night the famed Capitol Theatre in Port Chester re-opened after years of planning and renovation. On Friday, the historic venue will host a benefit for HeadCount featuring Bob Weir and The Roots.

In addition to the two headliners, HeadCount has just revealed that Warren Haynes, Grace Potter and Bobby Keys will be among the special guests rounding out the bill. We’re also intrigued by the “others are expected as well” part of the announcement. A limited number of tickets remain, so we recommend getting in on this while you can.

Faux The Archives Vol. 2 – A Phish Compilation

One of my favorite parts of Phish festivals are the From The Archives shows broadcast over each event’s radio station that feature amazing segments from the band’s archive. These programs, hosted by Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro, have been a staple of the group’s festivals since Clifford Ball. Earlier this summer, I decided to put together a compilation of tracks I’d choose if I got to host an episode of From The Archives. I shared these choices with our pal KernelForbin who downloaded the segments from the Phish Spreadsheet and lovingly remastered them for the first installment of a series we’ve dubbed “Faux The Archives.” Today, we present Faux The Archives Volume 2.

We’ll debut Faux The Archives – Volume 2 in ThePhish room on Turntable.FM starting at 2PM ET this afternoon. Once we’ve finished running through the tracks, a download link will be posted at ThePhish.fm. We start with the 1st and only known version of Phish covering The Chicken by James Brown. Then, we offer arguably the best-ever performance of Fee that goes beyond the 20-minute mark and earns the rare “-> Jam” distinction on Phish.net. Next, we’ve got what I like to dub “Smells Like An Antelope” and a severely underrated Tweezer from 1994 that contains a “Slave-like” jam. From there, we give you a Bathtub Gin sandwich, also from ’94, that contains only the second (and last) Phish cover of Jump Monk by Mingus as the filling. An extremely unusual My Sweet One leads into the powerful closing combo of the Deer Creek ’97 Harry Hood (the band changes the usual D-A-G end jam to B-A-G) and the Brickhouse YEM from ’95.

Questo mentioned that Trey and previously announced guests Warren Haynes and Bob Weir will all sit in with The Roots during tonight’s show. Anastasio played with The Roots back on February 24, 2000 when they backed B.B. King for a performance of Rock Me Baby that was taped for Cap Theatre boss Peter Shapiro’s All Access documentary. Bob Weir will open the evening with a solo acoustic set.

After taking the majority of last year off, the Dave Matthews Band returned in 2012 in a big way with a massive summer tour, and with the news that they would be releasing a brand new studio album in the fall. On Tuesday, DMB will release Away From The World, reuniting with longtime friend Steve Lillywhite, who produced the band’s first three multi-platinum efforts, as well as their 2000 “lost album” affectionately known as the Lillywhite Sessions.

Last month the band put out a call to their fans asking them to help in the making of music video for the record’s lead single – Mercy – by submitting video or photos of them completing some predetermined tasks. The crowd-sourced clip features contributions from a staggering 14,344 people conveying messages of hope, love and peace. Let’s check it out..

Friday Mix Tape: Moving Day

I find myself on the cusp of starting my life over for the fifth time. The framed remains of many lives past are about to get packed into boxes, like so many memories. The bittersweet feelings of victory are brushing up against the obvious contradiction of loss. These emotions are valid. They complete the process inside of you for better or worse.

I fancy HT readers as dreamers. I urge you, our dedicated following, to disregard any negative connotations these words may have. Starting over is an integral process of dreaming. You have to have the courage to realize that nothing is getting done where you are and by the mere act of relocating you are setting progress into motion. Things will start to happen. You just need to be open to the process. Pack your car and head to where you know you can grow, despite any doubt you may have. Believe in what you are, but more so, who you can become.

These are a collection of songs from my past and present that have memories surrounding my different locations I have called home. I hope you enjoy them.

It’s been over three months since Aaron Freeman announced he was leaving behind his “Gene Ween” persona which meant the end of Ween and we’re still missing the “Purveyors of Brown.” Ween was the rare act that not only allowed audio taping, but often encouraged video taping. There’s a lot of killer Ween footage out there and as the years go by more of it is finding its way to YouTube.

For this week’s Full Show Friday selection we’ve picked a full Ween performance from July 11th, 2009 at the Burlington International Waterfront Festival as taped by none other than Taper420.  Ween offered a fantastic mix of originals from throughout their career and the band seems in fine form.

Postcards From Page Side: Phish Dick’s – One For the Ages

$
0
0

To conclude what has been what I’ve previously called the “best Phish tour in a decade,” Phish threw down an absolutely historic three-night stand at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado over Labor Day Weekend. Their second consecutive Labor Day finale held at this venue, and my first trip out there, I can still not find a bad thing to say about this the venue, the vibe and most especially – the effort the band put forth to finish their 2012 with a gigantic exclamation point.

[All Photos by Andy Hill]

In my Leg Two Preview Column, I offered up a few challenges to the band. In Colorado, and throughout the leg, they delivered – big time.

“In addition to some fresh material, I’m also hoping that the band goes completely off the wall in a few aspects this second leg. Start with the crazy setlists and bustouts that they’ve brought forth this year and take it to the Nth degree. Realize that each show will be the only footprint (in most cases) that they will get to leave on a certain venue/city, and go all out. In other words, don’t play it safe – anywhere. There are 13 proper shows remaining until December. That’s not a lot for the final five months of the year. So go for IT. Build upon what you’ve created and take it DEEP! Explore, delve and be creative. Make a statement that the early summer wasn’t just lightning in a bottle for the 3.0 era.”

Last Friday’s first night of the Colorado run saw not only Phish take it to the next level in terms of setlist creativity, but go completely overboard. Playing a setlist that spelled out “F.U.C.K. Y.O.U.R. F.A.C.E,” before ending the show with the song proper and encoring with an allusion to “Dicks” in Grind >Meatstick, it was evident that the band was thinking creatively and obviously trying to one-up the infamous “S” show from one year earlier.

But, the show was not just about the gimmicky setlist. There were also some outstanding, and even all-time versions of a few tunes that were JAMMED to another realm, namely the Undermind, Chalkdust Torture, Carini and Runaway Jim. With the Jim clocking in at an even 20 minutes, Chalkdust at nearly 19 and Undermind reaching 15+, the band developed such impressive themes and ideas that stretched into out of bounds areas, much like the skiers of Colorado on the mountains. These songs took more twists and turns than a double diamond and simply have to be heard to be believed. And they all happened within the first show of a three-night run! It wasn’t even Saturday yet!

When Saturday finally did roll around, the band kept up the energy by playing the first show-opening Run Like An Antelope since 1990. A third song Tweezer that again developed into a thematic rocket to the stratosphere, and a fourth song opus of Fluffhead (which will forever define Phish 3.0 thanks to Hampton ’09), was yet another sign that anything goes in “Colorful Colorado,” having played three of their biggest tunes in the first four songs of the show.

However, the **clear** centerpiece of the weekend was about to come in the second set. Kicking off with Golden Age, another song that has defined this era of Phish – in both a musical and metaphorical sense – the band dropped another stellar version before segueing into Prince Caspian. A song despised by many fans, this version I’m sure changed a few minds and again became an all-timer, and possibly my favorite since Japan ’99. At this point, I just shook my head, and realized that my favorite band in the universe was back at the top of their game. It was as if the band was on the golf course, having the rounds of their lives, and every tee shot they took, they were downwind-hitting everything 300-yards right down the middle of the fairway. Just take out the driver, tee it up and let ‘er RIP! Anything was possible and everything they touched turned to gold. It didn’t matter what they were performing: they were playing it ALL with such fury and passion that it was as if not a single soul in the stadium had any idea of what was to come.

And then…they dropped Light.

If what we had witnessed and heard the past night and half wasn’t enough of a clue, Phish simply delivered one of the greatest jams I have EVER heard in my entire life. That is not an overstatement, even though I’m often guilty of saying and feeling so on the spot. This version was simply out-of-this-fucking-world. With more peaks and valleys than the Rocky Mountains looming in the distance, this jam has three, if not four distinct jams or peaks. I haven’t listened to it again, just yet, for fear of diminishing the moment, but trust me – this one is a keeper. In fact, I’d probably be justified in saying it was the single best JAM they have played since their return. The band released it as their official video from the show, so please listen and watch below to see what I mean…

Closing Saturday’s show with an ambitious and unexpected Mike’s Song>No Quarter (a cover that fits Phish to an absolute T) > Weekapaug Groove segment which saw the band play until midnight. An encore of Sleeping Monkey>Tweezer Reprise featured front man Trey Anastasio’s quip about drummer Jon Fishman returning for the encore eating a banana for energy after “almost passing out from rockin’ too hard” during the set. It was clear the band was enjoying themselves, that they were loose and in the comfort zone.

Sunday night saw the band catch their breath a little during set one (how could they not after the previous 2 nights?), but did see the tour’s second rendition of Ride Captain Ride. However, the main event was surely the second frame and showed the band was not about to slink quietly into the night before their well deserved break off the road until New Year’s.

Sand, the song I called the MVP of Leg One, fittingly kicked off the final set of Summer 2012. And, as per usual, Fishman held down the anchor and Mike Gordon wrapped his bass line slowly around our collective selves, like a poised and deadly boa constrictor, while Trey came over the top with swirling guitar patterns and Page McConnell added another layer of sonic wonderment before this version spring-boarded into oblivion. Another sure highlight of the weekend, this tune felt more like a sinking hole of quickSAND, as the audience seemingly struggled to keep focused on the four-headed monster known as Phish that was taking us for this ride.

A funky Ghost and relatively short (by this weekend’s standards) gave way to the dark Twenty Years Later. The poignant rejoicing came at the end of the show as Phish closed out their 2012 Summer Tour with two of their oldest tunes: The Lizards and Harry Hood.  Lizards was my favorite Phish song for a long time and Hood is as cathartic as they come in the catalog, so I couldn’t do anything but close my eyes, feel the burning smile that my face had involuntarily been making for the past three days and obviously, “surrender to the flow.”

As the thank you’s from the band and Character Zero faded away and the house lights came on, I again thought to my previous column from before the tour started…

“We’ve all wished for greatness out of Phish since their return, and now that we’ve consistently seen it, I’d say “great. Now show me more.” We wouldn’t be Phish fans if we didn’t have a “what have you done for me lately?” attitude that came from seeing the band constantly raise the bar throughout the ’90s. I challenge the band to dig deep and lay it all out on the line. This short, but intriguing second stint, in my eyes, is a statement time and turning point in the band’s next chapter. With some new tunes, greater risks and more jams, the band could not only break – but shatter – new ground for the next few years of Phish lore going forward. The choice is up to them.”

Simply put, Phish’s second leg, especially the Dick’s three-night run, DID – without a shadow of a doubt “GO DEEP” and SHATTER new ground for Phish moving forward. The future is bright, my friends. And I, for one, am counting the day’s until the band returns in December. Thank you Phish, for your best Summer in a very, very long time.

Bruce Springsteen Welcomes Vedder and Morello to Wrigley

You can make a case for that this year’s Wrecking Ball World Tour is the best in the long and illustrious history of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The Boss and his crew have been dusting off gems from every era, crushing the new material and have welcomed a slew of guests since embarking on the lengthy run in March. That trend continued last night at the band’s first of two Chicago performances when Springsteen delivered a ridiculous setlist strewn with rarities and appearances from Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder at Wrigley Field.

The lengthy set began with Prove It All Night, complete with the ’78 intro that fans had been pining for since 1978 and recently returned. Morello, who has guested with the E Street Band at various points throughout this tour, emerged for the Wrecking Ball tracks Death To My Hometown and Jack of All Trades. You can only imagine how crazy the audience went when The Boss welcomed Evanston native Vedder out for a powerful take on Atlantic City. Take a look…

Later in the main set, Morello returned for his signature sit-in song – The Ghost of Tom Joad – as well as the Land of Hope and Dreams that ended the stanza. The encore saw the tour’s third version of Jungleland followed by Vedder coming back for Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out and a Twist and Shout closer that also featured Morello. Fans were treated to 28 songs and three and a half hours worth of music by the time the band left the stage – not too shabby for a 63-year-old.

Set: Prove It All Night (’78 Version), My Love Will Not Let You Down, Out in the Street, Hungry Heart, We Take Care of Our Own, Wrecking Ball, Death to My Hometown (w/ Tom Morello), My City of Ruins, Spirit in the Night, Trapped (Jimmy Cliff cover), Jack of All Trades (w/ Morello), Atlantic City (w/ Eddie Vedder), Lonesome Day, I’m Goin’ Down, Darlington County, Shackled and Drawn, Waitin’ on a Sunny Day, None But The Brave, The Ghost of Tom Joad (w/ Morello), Badlands (w/ Morello), Land of Hope and Dreams (w/Morello)

Encore: We Are Alive, Thunder Road, Born to Run, Dancing in the Dark, Jungleland, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out (w/ Vedder and Morello), Twist and Shout (w/ Vedder and Morello)

The recently reopened Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York might be best known for all the legendary performances that took place in the room in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, but last night more history was made at the famed venue as members of the Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Phish and Grace Potter came together with The Roots to usher in a new era for The Cap at a benefit for HeadCount. For many in the room it was was their first visit to The Cap, which reopened on Tuesday with a performance from Bob Dylan, and it was hard not to be struck by the amazing renovation that brought the venue back to life. Impresario Peter Shapiro and his team put years worth of planning and construction into the historic venue which has left the area with a gem of a venue that features an arena-sized light rig, a state-of-the-art sound system and an unbelievable array of projectors.

The action started with a solo acoustic set from Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist Bob Weir. Weir is in the midst of his second-ever solo tour and seemed comfortable on the stage as he delivered one Dead classic after another. After a few years when Bobby seemed to scream rather than sing, Weir’s voice currently sounds as good as it has since Jerry passed. Following a cover of Dear Prudence, Weir welcomed Warren Haynes, Grace Potter and Bobby Keys out as the evening’s first guests. Grace told the crowd she had never sang a Dead song before and that she wasn’t familiar with the tune they were about to play, Bird Song, and it showed. Potter scatted, be-bopped and wailed, leaving a texture behind the gorgeous version of Bird Song Warren and the Bobby’s laid down. Warren, Weir and Grace then combined forces for Jack Straw, a song Potter seemed to know, with Bobby and Haynes trading verses. Keys came back out for a raucous Jailhouse Rock.

At the end of Jailhouse Rock Warren asked the crowd to give Weir a big hand and Bobby left Haynes, Potter  and Keys on stage for a beautiful take on The Rolling Stones’ Wild Horses. As an example of the sheer awesomeness of The Cap’s projection system, images of psychedelic horses were painted on the venue’s walls during the Stones cover. The finale of the opening set found Warren and Grace teaming up for a scintillating cover of Gold Dust Woman off Fleetwood Mac’s famed Rumors album. The pair have been covering this song for over four years, with a particularly impressive version thrown down at the 2008 Jammy’s, and their familiarity showed.

After a relatively short intermission the curtain came up on The Roots who opened with Paul Revere – their tribute to the late Adam Yauch and Chuck Brown. Fallon’s house band showed off just how tight they’ve become over a power-packed hour set that saw them play The Fire from 2010′s How I Got Over, You Got Me and The Next Movement from 1999′s Things Fall Apart and Get Busy from 2008′s Rising Down, along with quick takes on Sweet Child of Mine and Born Under A Bad Sign. Each member of the ensemble was given time in the spotlight and there’s no doubt this band won itself a slew of new fans last night.

Once front man Black Thought said good night to the crowd and The Roots vacated the stage, an army of stagehands emerged to set up what would be a historic encore set. Black Thought invited Phish front man Trey Anastasio out and first up for the pairing was a romp through First Tube. This Phish/TAB original was right in The Roots’ wheelhouse and was the most suggested tune Phish fans offered up in response to yesterday’s YEMblog Friday Conversation. Questo pounded as Big Red wailed away to a massive peak. Bathtub Gin was up next and wasn’t quite as tight as First Tube. Once the ensemble reached Anastasio’s solo, The Roots provided a funk-heavy beat which Trey impressively soloed over. Then, Trey welcomed his “homegirl” Grace Potter to the stage and the duo talked about their Burlington roots. Big Red told the crowd they’d be playing a relatively new tune called Pigtail and off they went on the tune from Anastasio’s forthcoming Traveler LP.

Next came the true “world’s colliding” moment when Weir, Keys and Haynes emerged leaving a member of Phish, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and The Rolling Stones onstage together backed by The Roots. First up was Dancing In The Streets which featured five guitarists (The Roots’ Captain Kirk Douglas, Potter, Anastasio, Weir and Haynes). Anastasio made sure to get his licks in during this “guitarmeggedon” version of a tune the Dead graced the same stage with back in 1970. Then, the whole gang stayed out for the blues standard The Thrill Is Gone with Warren taking vocal duties. For the first time during this encore set, Black Thought emerged and offered a few raps in between all the solos. For the finale, all the players remained out for a blistering Whipping Post, complete with Questlove crushing the drum parts. Trey took the first solo and delivered one blistering lick after another before giving way to Keys who showed off his immense talent on sax. Douglas and Haynes shared vocal duties on the Allman Brothers Band classic, with Warren using his solo to weave the melody of My Favorite Things into the mix. Black Thought introduced all the players and wished Capitol Theatre chief Peter Shapiro a happy birthday.

All in all, this outstanding “encore” won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Kudos to The Roots for nailing the majority of these tunes they never played before. As the crowd filed out of the building, looks of astonishment were on the faces of many who exchanged knowing glances. For the last few months the talk has been about The Capitol Theatre’s past, but with shows like last night the talk now turns to the present, the future and what appears to be a fantastic new chapter in the history of the legendary venue.
