Bloggy Goodness: New Spider Genus – Loureedia

0

Celebrities are used to having things like sandwiches,  streets or drinking games named in their honor, but there have only been a chosen few that have had a spider named for them. Today news surfaced that a new genus of the velvet spider has recently been named Loureedia, “in recognition of the fact that this velvet spider lives underground,” in honor of the Velvet Underground front man Lou Reed. The  spider, which is described as having a “dark and shiny” appearance and is known to live in Africa, Asia, Europe and Brazil. Reed joins both Frank Zappa and Neil Young, as the only members of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame that can claim the distinction of having an arachnoid named for them.

Finally, earlier this week longtime jam favorites Leftover Salmon released Aquatic Hitchhiker, their first new studio album in eight years. Produced by Steve Berlin from Los Lobos, and recorded at Cloud Sound Studios in Portland, Ore., the record is not only the Colorado-based band’s first containing all original material, but also their debut with banjo player Andy Thorn.

In conjunction with album, LoS have also released the five-part making of documentary, Salmonlandia, exclusively through iClips. The doc, which will run you just $5.99, includes a five-song download with two tracks only available through Salmonlandia on iClips. Leftover Salmon will kick off their first extended tour in quite some time with an appearance at this weekend’s Summer Camp Festival.

Video: Florence + The Machine – Wild Wild Life

While the summer music festival scene has grown exponentially in the United States over the last decade plus, it’s been flourishing in the United Kingdom for a number of decades. While you may know the big names like Glastonbury and Isle of Wight, there are also a number of smaller “boutique” fests like Bestival. The annual four-day fest, which is held at the Robin Hill country park on the Isle of Wight, has won all sorts of accolades and awards for the best UK fest thanks in part to its non-corporate feel, free-wheeling spirit and of course its fancy dress themes – which translates into a big costume party.

Earlier this week it was announced that Florence + The Machine would headline the festival on its Friday night, joining Stevie Wonder, New Order and Sigur Ros at the top of the bill. Florence Welch & Co. got in the spirit of this year’s wildlife fancy dress theme, donning animal costumes and turning in this playful acoustic cover of the Talking Heads’ Wild Wild Life. Let’s check it out…

HT’s 5th Annual Free NYC Summer Concert Guide

0
0

The summer concert season is upon us and the Hidden Track staff knows that it’s virtually impossible for us to afford every show we want to hit, and still be able to pay our insanely expensive New York City rents. Luckily for us, there are a plethora of fantastic free concerts throughout the summer that don’t cost a dime. We decided to weed through all the listings and present to you our 5th Annual NYC Free Summer Concert Picks. Let’s take a look…

HT Recommends: Laura Marling / Michael Kiwanuka / Willy Mason

Where: Celebrate Brooklyn! – Prospect Park Bandshell

When: Thursday, June 14, 7 PM

Official Info: In her native England, singer-songwriter Laura Marling, who was born in 1990, has often been described as an old soul, wise beyond her years. While so many artists of any age attempt to locate their inner child, Marling, with a sometime steely gaze, measures the prerogatives of youth against the looming realities of adulthood – the spectre of mortality, the betrayals of love, the balm of sex, the yearning for companionship, the need for independence. As the Times Of London recently posited, “Who else is making music as ambitious, as haunting, as centuries-straddling, as thought-provoking and artistically tenacious as this? And the answer is: nobody. No, really. Not a soul.”

Her two startlingly self-assured albums — Alas I Cannot Swim (2008) and I Speak Because I Can (2010) — brought the self-effacing and relatively shy Marling an extraordinary level of acclaim in her homeland, with each of them in turn being nominated for the U.K.’s prestigious Mercury Prize. She subsequently won a 2011 Brit Award, England’s equivalent to the Grammy, as Best British Female and an NME Award as Best Solo Artist.

Michael Kiwanuka is a British soul singer whose sound has been rightfully compared to Otis Redding and Bill Withers. Having just released his debut album “Home Again” in the UK, Kiwanuka’s music has already garnered much attention including the top spot in BBC’s Sound of 2012.

They will also be joined by the enigmatic songwriter WILLY MASON.

HT Recommends: Alejandro Escovedo

Where: Big Apple Barbecue & Block Party – Madison Square Park

When: Sunday, June 10, 4:30pm

Official Info: There are songwriters who sing their songs, and then there are songs who sing their writers.

Alejandro Escovedo is one with his muse and his music. Over a lifetime spent traversing the bridge between words and melody, he has ranged over an emotional depth that embraces all forms of genre and presentation, a resolute voice that weathers the emotional terrain of our lives, its celebrations and despairs, landmines and blindsides and upheavals and beckoning distractions, in search for ultimate release and the healing truth of honesty. Sometimes it takes the form of barely contained rage, the rock of punk amid kneeled feedback; sometimes it caresses and soothes, a whispery harmony riding the air of a nightclub room, removed from amplification, within the audience.

His rise has been gradual, a steady incline rather than a quick ascendance, but it has deepened and burnished his music, made it closer to the bone, where it begins to break, deepening his insight and his ability to find that insight in performance. His tireless touring, and dogged determination to place one album after another, has taken him through many musical scenes, remaining the same persona within each, of an artist who doesn’t settle for the easy way out.

Other Free Shows During The Big Apple Barbecue & Block Party: 6/9 – Jon Langford/ JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound / Southern Culture On The Skids, 6/10 – Roadside Graves / The Revelations featuring Tre Williams

HT Recommends: Deer Tick / Jonny Corndawg

Where: Red Hook Park

When: Thursday, June 21, 7 PM

Official Info: The music of Deer Tick fits loosely into the alternative/country category, but lead singer John McCauley’s rough, raw, and ragged vocals bring a wealth of rock and grunge influences to the band’s sound. Following the 2007 release of their first CD, War Elephant, Deer Tick began earning comparisons to bands such as Felice Brothers and Langhorne Slim. Their two follow-up albums, Born on Flag Day and The Black Dirt Sessions both helped to secure the band’s unique mark on the face of music with their trademark sound. The band’s fourth release, Divine Providence changes directions and features rowdy and raucous songs that draw inspiration from the raw power of the Stones and the Stooges.

Jonny Corndawg is a country singer, not a singer-songwriter. Born in Montana, raised in rural Virginia, Corndawg has been touring on his motorcycle since he dropped out of school in 2001. He’s played shows in every U.S. state, Canada and in Europe, but you won’t find him on CMT. His music is more in the vein of that obscure ‘70s country that housewives would discover on a Bear Family reissue in twenty years. In addition to pursuing the lost art of the Real Deal, Corndawg is an airbrushing, leather-working, marathon-running, truck-driving American. Audiences rest assured; Nashville Scene says “this guy knows exactly what he’s doing.

Other Free Shows At Red Hook Park: 6/19 – Das Racist, 6/20 – Brand Nubian / Game Rebellion, 6/24 – Comedy Central Presents – Hannibal Buress / Kevin Barnett / Josh Rabinowitz

HT Recommends: Alabama Shakes / Diamond Rugs / Robert Ellis

Where: Central Park Summerstage

When: Sunday, June 24, 3 PM

Official Info: The story of the Alabama Shakes begins in a high school psychology class in Athens, Alabama when Brittany Howard approached Zac Cockrell and asked if he wanted to try making music together. Inspired by diverse artists such as James Brown, Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, the band retained a sense of groove and space from their idols, along with a blistering force and emotion that simply couldn’t be learned. Eventually finding their way to a Nashville studio in 2011, they cut the song “You Ain’t Alone,” which helped launched the band. In 2011, NPR named them one of the best bands of the year, while MTV has called them one of the top bands to look for in 2012.

Diamond Rugs is a collaboration between members of Deer Tick, The Black Lips, Los Lobos, Dead Confederate and Six Finger Satellite. When John McCauley, the lead of Deer Tick decided he wanted to make another record during his downtime in his new home base of Nashville he decided to work with a number of friends and musical colleagues. What happened next was entirely unexpected; the musicians McCauley had recruited to play on his record, ended up contributing their own songs to the album and a fully-formed band emerged. The Diamond Rugs debut long player is going to be released in 2012.

The best of folks who write songs make you think about time, and Robert Ellis has the same ability. When he performs, the final hours of night race along in a sweaty, whisky-soaked blur. When he sits on a stool — with just his guitar, voice and songs — time slows down, as he spins tales of love and life and the way they twist together and are torn apart. All of it could easily be classified as country, of a sort with the great writers and players Ellis studies and admires, from George Jones to Paul Simon. Ellis’ own songwriting ability shines on his debut album, Photographs

HT Recommends: Noam Pikelny and Friends / The Sweetback Sisters / Spuyten Duyvil

Where: Madison Square Park – Oval Lawn Series

When: Wednesday, July 4, 3 PM

Official Info: Virtuosic banjo player Noam Pikelny headlines MSPC’s 10-year anniversary July 4 celebration with his band of friends including Aoife O’ Donovan (Crooked Still), Gabe Witcher (Punch Brothers), Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers) and Mark Schatz (Claire Lynch Band). Part of the acclaimed bluegrass group Punch Brothers and winner of the first Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass Music, Pikelny is, “a player of unlimited range and astonishing precision,” (Steve Martin).

The Sweetback Sisters Emily Miller and Zara Bode may not be blood relations, but their precise, family-style harmonies recall the best of country music from the Everlys to The Judds, as well as the spirited rockabilly energy of Wanda Jackson, one of the band’s role models. Like the artists they admire, the Sweetbacks are concerned with the traditional subjects of heartbreak, revenge, remorse and staying strong in the face of relationships gone wrong, albeit with a contemporary sensibility.

“Spuyten Duyvil,” Dutch slang for “in spite of the devil” as well as the creek connecting the Harlem and Hudson Rivers, is a new band of eight old souls playing and singing their hearts out. Led by husband and wife duo Mark Miller (guitar, Bouzouki, vocals) and Beth Jamie Kaufman (vocals) they lean on the history, folklore and sounds of the last 100 years to craft an energetic bluesy, bluegrass, jug band, Old Timey influenced force.

HT Recommends: George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic

Her performances are delivered with passionate vocal phrasing and excellent manipulation of melody, never ceasing in her explorations of sound. Although Friedberger is known for her role as the lead singer of The Fiery Furnaces, one of music’s most interesting and dynamic bands, she is just as comfortable playing alone on a stage with an acoustic guitar as she is fronting a band.

Friday Mix Tape: Remembering The Soldiers

0
0

While Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer and is thought of more as a weekend for fun than a weekend of remembrance, we can’t help but think of all the sacrifices those in the armed services have made over the years to keep us safe and free. With that in mind we’ve put together a mix of six tunes that pay tribute to those who gave their lives for their country.

We start with Born In The U.S.A., Bruce Springsteen’s ode to the difficulties those who served in the Vietnam War had to deal with upon their return. Iron Maiden’s The Trooper comes next and discusses the Crimean War. From there, we give you The Rooster by Alice In Chains about guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s relationship with his Vietnam Vet father. After that, Dropkick Murphys give us Last Letter Home, a tune detailing the correspondence between an American solider and his family before he died in Iraq. Our penultimate selection comes from Creedence Clearwater Revival – Fortunate Son is about a youngster who was drafted for Vietnam because he wasn’t from the world of privilege. Finally, Dispatch delivers their anti-war homage The General.

The Summer Camp Music Festival is well underway at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, Illin. where Floodwood, The Infamous Stringdusters, Digital Tape Machine, Van Ghost, Caravan of Thieves and The Werks were among the acts who played the six stages hosting sets on Thursday.

[All Photos by Mike Sherry]

Bassist Rob Derhak sat in with his moe. band mates Al Schnier and Vinnie Amico during Floodwood’s set, while UM members Jake Cinninger, Brendan Bayliss, Ryan Stasik and Andy Farag fooled around with covers at soundcheck while awaiting the arrival of Kris Myers and Joel Cummins from Digital Tape Machine’s set. If you can’t make it to Chillicothe, you can watch many sets from the weekend on iClips.

Pictures From Scamp – Day Two: Bob Weir Sits In With Primus

One of the first big sit-ins of Summer Camp took place last night at the Moonshine Stage where Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist Bob Weir came out during the Primus set for The Other One at the second day of the annual festival in Chillicothe, Illin. The Primus/Bobby connection stems from drummer Jay Lane who has been the drummer in Ratdog since Weir formed the group and currently mans the kit for Primus as he did from the group’s start until 1988. In fact, Les takes credit for introducing Lane to original Ratdog bassist Rob Wasserman and “putting Ratdog together.”

[All Photos by Mike Sherry]

The last Claypool/Weir collaboration took place at All Good in 2009 when the Primus bassist emerged during a stuff jam and stuck around through a cover of Tomorrow Never Knows, a song that Bobby had sat in with Claypool’s solo band on at Gathering of the Vibes 2000 and 2007. Also at GOTV 2000, Les was Ratdog’s guest on a pair of bass jams and a Spanish Jam that led into, you guessed it, The Other One. Furthermore, back on January 31, 2006; Weir, Lane and Claypool teamed up for a set billed as “Performance 3″ at a tribute to “Dr. Don” Pearson at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Bobby was at the festival along with Jackie Greene and Chris Robinson for a trio set earlier in the day.

Other highlights from Friday at Summer Camp included moe. guitarist Al Schnier sitting in with Keller Williams and Umphrey’s launching into their second version of Tool’s 46 & 2.

The Summer Camp Music Festival continued on Saturday with a full day of music that included two sets a piece from headliners moe. and Umphrey’s McGee (who also played a private set in the venue’s church) on the Moonshine and Sunshine stages respectively and the return of Gov’t Mule and ALO to the festival as well as performances from plenty of up-and-coming acts such as Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, The Lumineers, Tauk and Orgone.

[All Photos by Mike Sherry]

One of the days big sit-ins was Warren Haynes collaborating with G. Love and Special Sauce on Slim Harpo’s I’ve Got Love If You Want It. Haynes also sat in with moe. on Happy Hour Hero. The day also saw the return of Beatles/Pink Floyd tribute act Brain Damaged Eggmen featuring members of Umphrey’s McGee and the Disco Biscuits plus the second-ever performance from Gigantic Underground Conspiracy, a band made up of Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits / Conspirator), Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken (Big Gigantic) Chris Michetti (Conspirator / RAQ) and Ben Baruch (Underground Orchestra). For Umphrey’s encore of All In Time, the members of the band donned Star Wars masks, with bassist Ryan Stasik as Darth Maul, Brendan Bayliss as Darth Vader and the rest of the group as Stormtroopers.

Video: Langhorne Slim – The Way We Move

Over the last bunch of years Langhorne Slim has logged time on the road with an impressive who’s who of today’s roots-rock scene, sharing bills with the likes of The Avett Brothers, Drive-By Truckers, The Low Anthem and Josh Ritter. Slim, who independently released his first album all the way back in 1999, plays a bouncy mix of Americana, anchored by his distinct vocals that flutters between a whiskey soaked gruffness and a tender croon. On June 5 Langhorne Slim will release his latest studio album Way We Move, and recently released the music video for the record’s title track. Let’s check it out…

Langhorne Slim is currently in the midst of a Midwest tour with with Ha Ha Tonka, with the double bill hitting the Pike Room in Saginaw, Mich. tonight.

Has Ween Broken Up? Aaron Freeman Retires Gene Ween

Aaron Freeman, known to many of our readers as Gene Ween, dropped a bombshell on Rolling Stone when he told the magazine that he’s “retiring Gene Ween.” When pressed about whether that meant the end for HT faves Ween, Freeman responded “Pretty much, yeah. It’s been a long time, 25 years. It was a good run.”

Freeman has been battling to stay sober and for Ween’s NYE run in Denver, which may go down as the group’s last performances, he enlisted the help of a “sober ninja” to keep him clean. The artist formerly known as Gener recently released a solo album of Rod McKuen covers called Marvelous Clouds and has played a few gigs in support of the LP.

Here’s more on Aaron’s decision to retire Gene Ween…

Freeman, who released his solo debut Marvelous Clouds earlier this month, says there’s no animosity towards his bandmates or Melchiondo, who he met in the eighth grade. He says the pair are still on speaking terms, even though he’s been contemplating the decision for the past eight years.

“For me it’s a closed book. In life sometimes, in the universe, you have to close some doors to have others open,” says Freeman. “There’s no, ‘Goddamn that such and such!’ For me, I’d like to think it’s a door I can close finally.”

Ween formed in 1984 and has released a total of 11 studio albums, the last of which was La Cucaracha in 2007. We sure hope this isn’t the end for the New Hope, PA-based band.

UPDATE: Apparently Freeman didn’t fill his partner, Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo in…

The plot thickens with Mickey’s post on the Ween Facebook page.

After four packed days and nights of music, the Summer Camp Music Festival came to a close on Sunday in a fitting way, by extending into the sunrise hours during sets by Pretty Lights and Wyllys and the New York Hustler Ensemble. Sunday also saw two sets from moe. and a set from Umphrey’s McGee as well as performances by a bevy of HT faves including Yonder Mountain String Band, Greensky Bluegrass, Galactic, Jane’s Addiction and the Tedeschi Trucks Band.

In Memoriam: Doc Watson (1932 – 2012)

We’re sad to report that bluegrass pioneer Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson passed away this afternoon after complications from abdominal surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The seven-time Grammy-winning picker was known for the speed and fluidity which he brought to bluegrass guitar playing. Watson also founded Merlefest, an annual music festival held in Wilkesboro, which was named after his son Merle who died in a 1985 tractor accident.

Doc, who was blind, was not only an exceptional guitarist, he also sang and was an impressive harmonica and banjo player. Over the course of his remarkable career, Watson put out over 50 albums and collaborated with a who’s who of legendary performers including Chet Atkins, Flatts & Scruggs, Taj Mahal, Bill Monroe and Ricky Skaggs. Doc Watson was 89.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Doc’s family and the bluegrass community.

In anticipation of the June 12th release of The Lion The Beast The Beat, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals released the video for the first single, Never Go Back. In combination with the album’s title, this video suggests that the new project employs various children’s literature references, including Where the Wild Things Are and The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. We’ll certainly have more from longtime HT fave Grace Potter and Company as soon as we get a chance to check out the new record.

Through The Years: Ween 1987 – 2011

Yesterday was a sad day for Ween fans as Aaron Freeman announced he had retired his Gene Ween persona and therefore the band after a 25 year run. While the news wasn’t a complete surprise to anyone paying attention, except perhaps Deaner, it’s different when you see that the actual words had come out of Freeman’s mouth. In honor of Ween and their illustrious career, we’ve put together a Through The Years playlist for Ween featuring one video a year from 1987 to 2011 which shows the power of the Purveyors of Brown’s live performances.

Ween was a rare band that allowed audiences to video tape their shows, so thankfully there’s lots of choose from. Our playlist includes a clip from a talent show performance featuring Gene and Dean from 1988, the pair’s appearance on the Jane Pratt Show in 1993, a live take from MTV’s short-lived Oddvile show, festival appearances at the first Bonnaroo, the third ACL Fest, last year’s Lollapalooza and more.

Ween – Through The Years 1987 – 2011 (Playlist)

Here’s the full tracklist detailing all 25 clips…

Review: Victor Wooten Band @ Beachland Ballroom

Victor Wooten Band @ Beachland Ballroom, May 29

Rare are the opportunities for a concert goer to experience quite as bodacious of a sound as that of four masterful bass players and two world class drummers delivering a battery of original sounding funk, soul and highly technical jazz instrumentation to the belting lyrics of a talented and vivacious singer. And that was just the second song of the Victor Wooten Band’s first set. The song was titled Brooklyn after the NYC borough where Vinny Fodera’s legendary Fedora Bass factory is located and where Victor’s signature Yin Yang Deluxe Bass was made. The new lineup for Wooten’s band is a roll call of heros for fusion jazz fans billed plainly with the following phrase: “New band. New Sound. New Experience.”

[All Photos by Michael Stein]

There was barely an untrained eye in the crowd as the band took the stage at the Beachland Ballroom Tuesday evening in the land of Cleve. The first hint of what was to come was an orchestral arrangement of the Flecktones’ classic Sunset Road playing over the PA as the musician crawled to their perches amidst a sea of the worlds’ finest made instruments scattered homogeneously across the stage.

Victor Wooten unexpectedly donned a Cello and began plucking and bowing at its strings as the remaining rhythm section – i.e. the rest of the band – churned up the melody for Crystal Peterson to take center stage and serenade the audience with the original song titled A Woman’s Strength. Her slender and youthful appearance is merely bonus for the gazing eyes of the audience because Peterson is as talented as they come. Her incredible vocal power and unique flow was demonstrated during Brooklyn with Victor at last on his bass guitar as she led the band through a journey of soulful lyrics followed by a section of co-syncopation with Victor and his bass notes, an impressive skill to say the least.

Peterson showed a range of other skills throughout the show as she bounded the stage filling in on just about any instrument that needed an extra pair of hands including a drum solo on JD Blair’s kit when the humorous drummer took center stage to close the set with strangely titled song, Live in 2012. The remainder of the band made their marks during Brooklyn as well, first when bassists Dave Welsch and Steve Bailey picked up a trumpet and trombone to carry the band into a NOLA influenced funky breakdown that led directly into a chorus of the Rufus and Chaka Khan hit Tell Me Something Good before taking it back to the city of Brooklyn to end the song. At this point, barely 15 minutes into the show the audience had gotten their money’s worth to the fullest. This was definitely going to be a fun affair.

The technical barrage of musicianship continued to flow through fun and mesmerizing numbers as the band continued to break out new instruments to complement the “lead bass” power of Victor Wooten and his dominant stage presence. The next track, My Life gave the famed front-man an opportunity to show his true form in a bass solo supported by JD Blair encouraging the crowd that “it’s okay to clap your hands on the two and four” as Wooten hammered at his instrument procuring sounds no other player could conjure.

The funky good time and Motown parade continued throughout the first set including a Jackson 5 chorus of I Want You Back segued into the famous riff from Herbie Hancock’s Watermelon Man in the middle of the song House. Steve Bailey took center stage with a fretless 6 string bass to showcase a montage of rock and roll melodies and improvised phrases that exemplify the reason why this man has recently earned the position as Director of the Bass Department at the Berklee College of Music, a position he stated he would be bringing “new ideas” to this upcoming semester. This led into Imagine This featuring Peterson’s vocals and lastly the set closer with the previously mentioned Live in 2012.

The second set contained far less fresh music, yet was equally delightful featuring the spectacular showmanship of Victor’s electric bass stylings in a range of combinations with the members of the band. Victor and JD started the set with a funky jam in Yo Victa > U Can’t Hold No Groove. The full band re-entered that stage for Victor to display yet another form of “bassmanship” on the upright double bass with Steve Bailey on the electric upright as well for the two to engage in dueling bass solos in the song Get it Right. Watching Bailey’s hands on that instrument is must do for anyone who gets the chance because he is a technically masterful player. The band continued with Overjoyed and a Stevie Wonder cover with Peterson on vocals, before reducing the numbers back down to Victor, Bailey and drummer Derico Watson for an old song titled Chick from Korea, of which, Bailey exclaimed “Victor remembered 70% of and I remembered 40%, thus we gave you 110% in that song.”

The musicians then left Victor alone finally to do what he does best, turning his bass into an orchestra of loop sampled sounds for his famous solo version of the Beatles song Yesterday followed by his heartfelt, funky, multi-tonal homage to Amazing Grace, which featured JD Blair laying down the beat. At last, the full band joined Victor to close the set with the title track off their new album Sword and Stone and an encore with the song Heaven, which pays respect to all the family members, Wooten’s and otherwise, who have passed along and whose memories should not bring sadness, but rather joy and remembrance.

This was only the band’s third show together and so far the sound is incredibly tight and the experience, as promised, is something completely new. You can catch The Victor Wooten Band delivering its jazz, funk and soul shakedown to nearly all the states of of the Union this year on a full-fledged tour across the nation. From the experience in Cleveland Tuesday evening, this show is sure to continue on a trajectory of new and exploratory material in and outside of the pocket.

God Street Wednesdays: Video Premiere – Who’s Driving

0
0

Today we continue our series of posts that feature the exclusive premiere of video from GSW’s reunion shows in 2010, lovingly shot and put together by our pal Mike Wren. As with our last posts, God Street Wine guitarist Lo Faber tells the tale of the song in the video. Here’s Lo’s take on Who’s Driving as well as the video of GSW performing the tune at the Gramercy Theatre on July 10, 2010.

Who’s Driving by Lo Faber

The year was 1991, George Bush I was President, Silence of the Lambs was Best Picture, and five guys were making the daring leap from New York City bar band to full time touring band. We moved from various NYC apartments and jobs to a big, ramshackle house in Ossining, an hour to the north, and began booking as many gigs as we could. The shows became farther away and more frequent, the overall hygiene level declined, the time spent in our white Chevy Sport Van increased dramatically, and the question of “Who’s Driving” was always of paramount importance.

Our home life in Ossining was soon pervaded by an insecure, gnarly sort of spookiness. Late nights when we were home were spent in manic grudge-generating poker games or watching VHS tapes of “Twin Peaks” episodes. Sixteen different types of mustard occupied much of the refrigerator. Random girlfriends, acquaintances, and who-knows-who-that-is types were usually sleeping in various places (“Where’s that thin girl — practicing her magic tricks again?”) Personal possessions were jealously guarded and initialed with magic marker — no communal sharers we (“Who smoked all my cigarettes?”) Our possibly-mob-connected landlord poked around at odd hours (“Why is that man outside with a flashlight in his hand?”) There were snakes in the walls. There was a cat named Bob who tortured the house’s many mice for pleasure, until he became too fat to chase them. There was a little boy next door who hit Jon with a badminton racket.

God Street Wine – Who’s Driving (Live at Gramercy)

There was always something to do, band-related, and often no clear sense of what was whose responsibility (“Did you make that phone call? Did you mail that package?”) There were tons of gigs, and when there was no gig there were tons of rehearsals — yet somehow it always felt that there was lots of bored time sitting around doing nothing. In spite of all this (or perhaps because of it) these were the years we really matured as a band and developed a sound and feel of our own, despite the some-might-say disgusting circumstances in which we lived. In particular we knew singing was a weak point and worked very hard, day after day, to improve our vocals.

Anyway, “Who’s Driving” is a song about those times, written during those times, which later (inevitably) became the title of a live album (which, oddly, does not include the song). Musically it’s a pretty simple bluesy shuffle, though I always love the Eb minor/major 7 chord at the start of the chorus. The outro (“we’re driving under bridges on fire”) was cannibalized from an unfinished song I’d had lying around for years, not sure what to do with; its exuberance seemed a nice counterpoint and release from the dark, unsettled, on edge vibe of the main part of the tune.
