ALBUM PREMIERE: Soul Scratch Deliver Scorching Grooves On ‘Pushing Fire’

Los Angeles band Soul Scratch truly do live up to their name. The six-piece band lays down thick funky grooves and the kind of retro soul sounds being done by East Coast labels like Daptone. Vocalist Dale Spollett is a powerhouse, bringing to mind peers like St. Paul and the Broken Bones’ Paul Janeway and legends like Syl Johnson. The musicians in the band are no slouches either, and they’ll often rip into down and dirty instrumentals strictly meant to get you dancing.

On January 13th Soul Scratch will release their new LP Pushing Fire on Colemine Records, the label that is home to other funkalicious acts like Orgone and Monophonics. Today we are delighted to offer up an exclusive sneak preview of Pushing Fire right here on Glide. The album kicks off with the brassy burst of “Pacified” and keeps the funky grooves on high until the final organ-soaked notes of the appropriately named closer “Thank You”. This is as much a party record as it is a preaching record, and as we embark on a future that’s anything but certain, we desperately need both of those things.

Vocalist and lyricist Dale Spollett offers up his own thoughts on Pushing Fire:

“We’re incredibly excited to share this album with the world, and to be doing it with Terry and Bob [Cole] from Colemine Records has been amazing. From the beginning of the process we were lucky enough to have people like Sergio Rios (Orgone) at Killion Sound and Stephen Kaye at Sun King Studios involved, and they really helped make the album special. We wanted to make an album about togetherness and spreading love all over the world, but also make something gritty that makes you smile and move your feet. I think we did that with this album and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with everyone. “

When ‘A Monster Calls’, Just Let It Ring (FILM REVIEW)

In the exchange that opens A Monster Calls, a narrative dialogue between Conor (Lewis MacDougall) and the Monster (Liam Neeson, whose voice has been digitally altered to sound menacing) that talks about a boy who was, paraphrased, too young to be a man, but too old to be a kid. It’s a clear reference to the kid that the monster’s talking to, and with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, sets itself up to bookend the film.

With the pesky question of wondering how the movie is going to end out of the way, all that’s left to do is try and buckle in and endure almost two full hours of tearjerker porn before that quote comes up again.

After a lush, beautiful credits sequence, the film steamrolls through its setup so forcefully it’s almost like it has blinders on. Conor’s a troubled kid, he gets bullied in school, his mother (Felicity Jones) is sick with terminal cancer. He also keeps having a nightmare about trying to save her from a fall, then failing, so at least the degree of subtlety here is consistent.

One night, he conjures up a monster out of a giant tree he can see out his bedroom window. Now, I acknowledge that the idea of a walking tree monster is going to limit a production designer, creatively speaking, but that doesn’t stop the monster from looking like an oversized Groot from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Anyway, Not-Groot, shows up and warns Conor he’ll tell him three stories, and Conor will tell him a fourth. What could that possibly mean? Well, it turns out, the fourth story will be about his nightmare, as Not-Groot explains, killing any kind of curiosity that might have accidentally been created had they left that ambiguous.

So, Not-Groot shows up periodically, and tells him fairy tales without a clear metric of right or wrong, of morality or justice or even a valuable lesson learned. It’s (almost) the movie’s most intriguing aspect, especially when coupled with the lush, watercolor-style animation that weaves these tales together.

Unfortunately, any morsel of thought-provoking nuance has to be squashed with some kind of blunt exposition, like when Not-Groot explains to Conor that there are no good guys or bad guys in real life, that we all fall “somewhere in the middle.” Yeah thanks, Not-Groot.

Speaking of blunt exposition, each new tale begins to tie in with Conor’s real-life storyline more directly, and the parallels between a kid dealing with the grief of losing his mother (Felicity Jones) and a kid who talks to an eight-story tall talking tree monster start to take shape.

It’s not that the movie’s intentions aren’t pure, and it’s impossible not to think about the fact that the story is based on the last effort undertaken by author Siobhan Dowd before she died of cancer back in 2007. But even the noblest intentions can’t save the this clunky, ham-handed tale of dubious morality.

Granted, there’s a possibility that I’m an outlier here, of course, as the entire last third of the movie I was surrounded by people actively fighting back tears while I kept wondering how many times Not-Groot was going to scream “this isn’t where the tale ends” before this god-forsaken movie would make good on its promise.

It’s not like I’m immune to such things, either. I even started thinking back to movies like Terms of Endearment or those Sarah McLachlan commercials with the dogs in an effort to procure some kind of connection to an audience that seemed genuinely moved by an overwhelmingly uninspiring story. Alas, every bit of incremental progress in starting to well-up I had was undone by something someone said or did in what was supposed to be the emotional climax of a movie about a kid losing his mother to cancer.

Believe me, I was surprised, too.

By the time the movie ends (and boy, does it ever take its sweet fucking time ending), all I was left was my own empty, apathetic reaction to an emotionally empty film. Somehow, despite a clumsy attempt to explore the universal theme of loss and grief had only managed to move me far enough to consider ripping out a nose hair just so I wouldn’t look like the only person in the theater who wasn’t crying.

A Monster Calls is now playing in theaters everywhere.

The Magpie Salute Premiere “Comin’ Home” – Pay Tribute To Late Eddie Harsch

The Magpie Salute, featuring key members of The Black Crowes (guitarist/vocalist Rich Robinson, guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien) premiered their performance video of “Comin’ Home” that begins with a tribute to the late keyboardist Eddie Harsch who passed away November 4, 2016. Eddie was set to perform with the band during their upcoming four night, sold-out engagement later this month at the Gramercy in New York (January 19, 20, 21, 22). The video was filmed inWoodstock, NY in August 2016 and features Eddie talking, rehearsing and subsequently performing the classic “Comin’ Home”–popularized by Delaney and Bonnie with Eric Clapton in the ’70s. Watch the video below…

“This recording came from the last time I got to play with Eddie Harsch,” says Rich Robinson. “He was my friend and musical teacher. His mastery and subtlety will forever be an inspiration. RIP Eddie.”

THE MAGPIE SALUTE is an exciting new band that brings together three key members of The Black Crowes–guitarist/vocalist Rich Robinson, guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien–as well as members of his own band, drummer Joe Magistro, keyboardist Matt Slocum, and guitarist Nico Bereciartua. In addition,Rich has pulled together a fine cast of vocalists, including lead singer John Hogg (Hookah Brown, Moke), former Crowes singer Charity White and two additional background singers, Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen. From the start (October 2016), the band was embraced by music fans when they instantly sold out their first-ever show in NYC (January 19, 2017 at the Gramercy Theatre). When three more shows (January 20, 21, 22) were instantly added due to popular demand, they immediately sold out as well.

“It’s been a better welcome than we could’ve ever hoped for,” says Rich Robinson when asked about the instant thumbs-up from fans. “We are humbled by the outpouring of support. It feels powerfully real.” He adds: “So far we’ve heard such excited and truly positive thoughts from everyone. We are grateful for the response.” Marc Ford says the fans “seem to be very excited. I’m excited. I’m just starting to see how much this music means to people.”

THE MAGPIE SALUTE‘s four sold-out shows will draw from The Black Crowes catalog and solo material from Rich and Marc, plus more. Explains Rich: “Yes, we will continue in the long line of digging deep into my old Crowes catalog, some great covers–some we’ve done before, and some we’ve never played–and some of Marc’s songs off of his new record. We look forward to the shows and what may come.”

At the Gramercy, the band’s set lists will vary from show to show, keeping the music fresh for the musicians and the audience. Says Marc: “I don’t think I would do very well in a situation where there’s no danger. It has to stay interesting to us. If we weren’t in to it, how could the listener be? I think we’ll mix it up.”

The Beauty Of The Mundane And The Unique Appeal Of ‘Paterson’ (FILM REVIEW)

$

There’s an innate difficulty in explaining a Jim Jarmusch movie to someone who’s never seen one. They exist in this kind of augmented normalcy, absent the twee-friendly symmetry of Wes Anderson or the straight up surrealism of David Lynch. They’re extra-normal, the a subtle exaggeration that’s relegated into the margins, eventually becoming more and more perceptible, but only after showing up in scene after scene.

That being the case, if you’re a Jarmusch fan, you’ll absolutely love Paterson, his newest slice-of-life tale. Set in Paterson, New Jersey, it stars Adam Driver as a bus driver who’s also named Paterson. True to his own style, Jarmusch never makes this into an actual punchline, but rather a constructed narrative coincidence that gets acknowledged in passing by a handful of characters in a few passing moments.

As an aspiring poet, the film’s broken up by bits of Paterson’s writings, told via narration, usually accompanied by scrawled bits of words across random corners of the frame. His first, titled Love Poem, starts off the film, and goes into great detail about the kinds of matches he and his wife, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani) prefer to keep on hand. It’s startlingly abrupt at first, but as it gets repeated throughout, you start to see the beauty in not just the words, but the spaces and silences between them.

Such is the appeal of Paterson, a film that starts on a Monday (complete with title card), and systematically going through his work week as a bus driver. Five times throughout the film, we watch as he gets up, eats breakfast, goes to work, drives the bus, comes home, straightens the mailbox, walks the dog, grabs a drink, goes home. It’s curiously mundane, but inadvertently reveals bits of profundity so slight you wonder if they were planned out in advance, or they just ended up being caught on film.

It’s in this kind of extra normalcy that Driver really gets to thrive as an actor, playing an unassuming everyman with the soul of a poet hiding in plain sight. He’s charismatic without being conspicuous, and as approachable as he seems aloof, and the perfect actor to carry a movie that shrugs off the normalcy of alienation while celebrating the fragile mundanity of the creative spirit.

In many ways it’s the definitive Jarmusch film, one that exists both as a loving ode to the subtleties of everyday life, and at the same time, is simply a collection of scenes captured by his camera.

Paterson is now playing in select cities, with additional cities opening throughout the month.

“2016 was a great year for us. We went 30,000 miles on the road doing what we love, meeting the amazing music lovers everywhere who make this all possible. We honestly didn’t think the year could get any better… and then our wonderful team surprised us with our first full-length live album for Christmas, says Jocelyn. “Seriously, we had no idea they were making this for us. SONG PREMIERE: Joseph King and The Mad Crush Invite Sing-A-Longs With Catchy “Everyday Feels Like A Heart Attack”

Brooklyn-based artist Joseph King is known for his unique songwriting and musical style, an amalgam of sincere and sometimes quirky, pop songs with pent-up indie rock edginess, surf rock undertones, and late 60’s throwback pop sensibilities. His latest project is billed as Joseph King and The Mad Crush and it’s a fully realized manifestation of Joseph’s songwriting. On January 31st the band will release I Miss Everything, a lush effort filled with moody organs and gritty ‘verbed out guitars, smoky yet smooth vocals, and grooves that range from full-on surf rock to Doors-esque hypnotic vamping.

Today Glide Magazine is presenting an exclusive early listen of one of the album’s standout tracks, “Every Day Feels Like a Heart Attack”. The song carries hints of Tom Petty with pop punk energy and a 90′s alternative rock sound. Despite the foreboding song title, it’s hard not to feel good and sing along to the catchy chorus and delightful harmonies.

Joseph King shares the story behind it, saying, “I wrote this song a couple of summers ago loosely based on the experiences I had with a lovely lady that gave me a bit of anxiety. I decided to play it for her in her bedroom one day, forgetting the gist of the lyrical content, and I’ll never forget her reaction: ‘Really, Joseph? I make you feel like you’re having a heart attack everyday?’ Of course not babe, of course not… “

LISTEN:

Joseph King and the Mad Crush release I Miss Everything on January 31st. For more music and info visit josephkingmusic.com.

Warren Haynes Embraces A New ‘Band’ For The Last Waltz 40 Tour (INTERVIEW)

No one could ever accuse guitarist, vocalist, musical arranger and bandleader Warren Haynes of being a slacker. While his work with his signature band Gov’t mule and a steady solo career keep him occupied as his day job(s), his ongoing efforts with the Jerry Garcia Symphony Project and various other guitar duties.

Haynes is currently preparing to helm “The Last Waltz 40 Tour: A Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of The Last Waltz,” which he’s taking on tour for the next two months. Produced under the auspices of Blackbird Presents and the company’s resident producer Keith Wortman, the idea originated with a two-night, sold-out concert event entitled “Last Waltz New Orleans: A Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of The Last Waltz” during last year’s Jazz Fest. Haynes and producer/bassist Don Was served as musical directors of the all-star ensemble which also included Michael McDonald, Jamey Johnson, John Medeski, and Terence Higgins of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Glide recently had a chance to talk to this musical multi-taker during a rare respite just prior to the holidays and Gov’t Mule’s Beacon run..

01GovtMule_19

Did you know these other musicians on The Last Waltz Tour previously?

I had worked with Mike McDonald in the past and knew he would be wonderful for it. I had only recently met Jamie when I heard him at the Skynyrd tribute at the Fox Theater. He sounded amazing and I immediately thought he would fit into that Levon role extremely well. We put one night on sale and it sold out very quickly and then we added another night and did two nights at the theater. The concept was to make it a little more New Orleans based on the fact that we were in New Orleans and we had originally lost Allen Tousaint who had done the horn arrangements for the original Last Waltz. It came together quickly based on the fact that we were familiar with each other’s work.

So how much of the original show do you tackle? Is it just the Band material or is also the material that featured the special guests — Dylan, Van Morrison, Emmylou Harris and the like?

The show in New Orleans contained about thirty percent of the special guest/cover type songs. We had Ivan Neville and Cyril Neville and Dave Malone from The Radiators. One night we had Lukas Nelson. Recently, when we did my event in Asheville, the Christmas Jam, we had Bob Weir and Alison Krauss. The concept for the tour will be to have different guests in different cities. So we won’t be doing the same songs everywhere we turn up.

Had you mostly worked with these musicians before?

The only one I hadn’t worked with was Jamey Johnson. I’ve worked a lot with Medeski and a lot in the last few years with Don Was. Terrence Higgins was the drummer in my band after I released the Man in Motion album and toured behind that. I worked with the horn guys off and on through the years. It didn’t take a ton of rehearsal. Everybody showed up prepared, we rehearsed a few days and that was that.

How familiar was everybody with the material?

In varying degrees, everybody was familiar with the songs. But everybody had plenty of time to live with the music. We decided on the song selection well in advance. We couldn’t possibly tackle the whole show because the original show was so long. When everyone showed up the first day of rehearsal everyone showed up prepared and it just clicked.

Have The Band’s two surviving members Robbie Robertson or Garth Hudson seen the show? Have they weighed in on it?

I don’t know if either one of them saw the New Orleans show, but Keith (Wortman) had heard from Robbie, but I’m curious what that discussion was about. I had heard he really enjoyed. I’m not aware of what else they might have spoken about.

What did The Last Waltz and the Band’s music mean to you as an individual? Was that an influence on you early on? Did it make a big impact on you musically?

When I finally saw the movie it was so intense to have all those people in one place that were all connected to The Band’s music. It was such an impressive night. Then through the years, it became more and more important, as did The Band’s music to me. I think that music is more important now to me and to a lot of people more now than it was then.

You’re the epitome of a journeyman musician. You’ve been a part of so many great bands, be it your solo material, the music you make with Gov’t Mule, and of course the ongoing role you’ve played with the Dead and the Allman Brothers Band. You could have done tributes connected with those bands and their classic albums.

This opportunity came up because it was the 40th anniversary of The Last Waltz and it was something we were all excited about doing. The one-off version exceeded our expectations and we decided to keep it going a bit longer. I’m very excited it’s going to happen, and of course I was very close to Levon the last 15 years of his life and I really loved him and loved playing music with him as much as possible. We celebrated his 70th birthday with him at Mountain Jam a few years back and we had a lot of guests join us for that. It just feels right. I just feels natural.

How do you manage your time? You’re part of so many different ensembles? How do you keep it all straight?

Well, it takes a lot of work and a lot of coordination from my office and I have a lot of people helping me tie it all together. But I think it’s very important to me to feel some sense of urgency in what I’m doing and not get trapped into doing the same thing all the time, which I absolutely would not enjoy.

It seems you don’t have to worry about that ever happening. But how do you handle conflicts? What would happen if the Dead were to call and ask you to be available next month? How would you shuffle things around to accommodate them?

Well. hopefully you have more advance warning. (chuckles) There have been instances in the past where I had to move a lot of stuff around to accommodate something I really wanted to do, but if you can make it work, you do. There have also been instances where there were things I really wanted to do that I absolutely could not do based on scheduling.

Still, it must be nice to be given those choices.

Well it’s certainly better to be too busy than not busy enough.

Big Ears Festival Additions: Jeff Tweedy Performing Improv Set With Chikamorachi, Knox Symphony Special Show

The Big Ears Festival continues to expand music programming over the festival weekend with artist additions and additional performances by artists already in attendance. The festival’s daily lineup is out now and daily tickets go on sale this Friday, January 13 at 10AM Eastern at BigEarsFestival.com.

The Big Ears Festival is proud to welcome the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra for a special Sunday performance at Knoxville’s premier music hall, the Mill & Mine. Directed by Aram Demirjian, the program will feature pieces from composers John Adams, Matt Aucoin and Bach. “I could not be more thrilled for the KSO to participate in Big Ears, a signature annual event that highlights Knoxville’s growing status as a destination city for the arts,” says Demirjian. “It is essential for the continued vitality of our art form that we shine a spotlight on the music of our time through events like Big Ears. We are delighted and grateful to Ashley Capps and the Big Ears Festival to be featured for the third straight year and look forward to continued future collaboration.”

In addition to their Friday performance as seminal rock band Wilco, individual members of the band will perform throughout the festival weekend. Founding member and leader, Jeff Tweedy, one of American music’s most accomplished songwriters and musicians, will perform an improvisational set with Chikamorachi (and Rangda) drummer Chris Corsano and upright bassist Darin Gray, who will also perform with Wilco member Glenn Kotche in On Fillmore. The Tweedy Meets Chikamorachi collaboration will mark one of the first performances ever by the group. In addition, Wilco keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen and art historian and curator James Merle Thomas bring their extraterrestrial project Quindar to Knoxville for a special performance featuring ambient, electronic experimental music accompanied by film projections from historical archives of NASA and the Smithsonian Institution.

On top of contributing synth and guitar for Colin Stetson’s reimagining of Gorecki’s 3rd symphony for Big Ears 2017, Arcade Fire member Jeremy Gara will join the festival for a special solo, improvisational performance following the release of his first solo album, Limn, which was mastered by Deathprod and Supersilent member, Helge Sten. Other artist additions include the duo of pianist Matthew Shipp and drummer Bobby Kapp, both mainstays of the free and improvisational jazz movements. The duo formed after collaborating on Kapp’s 2015 quartet album Themes 4 Transmutation and performed for the first time as a duo on their 2016 collaborative, fully improvised album Cactus. Aside from his duo with Kapp, Shipp will also perform a solo set during the festival weekend.

Along with their Jem Cohen collaboration, Gravity Hill Sound+Image, some artists will perform additional sets throughout the festival weekend. One such performance will feature singer and lute player George Xylouris, along with internationally acclaimed drummer Jim White, who return to Big Ears as duo Xylouris White. Composer, producer and songwriter, T. Griffin, and his band The Quavers, will bring their combination of acoustic instruments and homespun electronics to Knoxville for a performance during the festival weekend. Led by singer, guitarist and composer, Mira Billotte, White Magic will perform a set of their signature psychedelic, experimental folk. Internationally renowned composer, band leader, saxophonist and sound experimentalist, Matana Roberts, will deliver a solo performance in addition to her collaboration with Cohen. Rounding out additional performances by Cohen collaborators will be Jessica Moss, who will present a unique and mesmerizing solo performance of violin and vocals shaped by electronic effects.

Grammy nominated Theo Bleckmann, who the New York Times describes as “a vocalist of inventive instinct and assiduous musicality,” will be joined by jazz guitarist Ben Monder, who was featured on David Bowie’s final album Blackstar, for a special duo collaboration at this year’s festival. In addition to his genre-bending work, Grenesekoge (The Border Woods), Frode Haltli will deliver a solo set for festival fans. Making his first concert appearance in the United States, Norwegian Hardagen fiddle player Nils Økland will perform two special duo sets of traditional and contemporary music, one with harmonium player and pianist Sigbjørn Apeland and another with bassist Mats Eilertsen, in addition to a performance with his Klølvatn band.

We All Want The Same Things  is the eagerly awaited third album from Craig Finn and arrives via Partisan Records on Friday, March 24th. Finn’s third solo release, will be available for pre-order at all leading DSPs beginning today, January 10th. All pre-orders receive an instant download of the album’s powerful first single, “Preludes,” that premiered yesterday, January 9th exclusively via NPR Music and can be heard below.

“‘Preludes’ is what I remember 1994 being like,” Finn says, “coming back to the Twin Cities after being away for college. It’s a time in my life that I felt most adrift, but there was also a feeling of wonder in being out of step and alone. This is the song on the album that is closest to being autobiographical, but I think it fits with these other character studies in that I was trying to figure out my place in a world that didn’t seem to have a lot of room for me.”

Finn will herald his new album with a very special living room tour, “We All Want The Same Things: An Evening of Music and Conversation with Craig Finn.” Presented in conjunction with Undertow Music Collective, the trek begins tomorrow, January 11th, in Kingston, NY and then visits 11 cities across the country, finishing Saturday, January 21 in Baltimore. Venues will be unveiled to ticket buyers upon purchase. Most dates are sold out – for complete details and remaining ticket availability, please see undertowtickets.com/collections/craig-finn.

Finn and his band The Uptown Controllers will then travel to North America as special guests on Japandroids’ upcoming headline tour, getting underway Monday, February 13th at Madison, WI’s Majestic Theatre and then continuing through late March. For complete details and regularly updated tour information, please visit www.craigfinn.net/tour

Showtime Announces ‘Twin Peaks’ Premiere Date

twin-peaks

A quarter century after its demise, and following several years of hype and rumor, not only is that gum you like finally gonna come back in style, we also know the date. Showtime has revealed that May 21 will mark the premiere of Twin Peaks, which debuts with a two-hour opening. The David Lynch helmed revival is set for 18-hours, which finds Kyle McLachlan’s Agent Cooper drawn back to the surreal town of Twin Peaks, though so far little else is known about the plot. Showtime president David Nevins has described the new series as “pure heroin” which bodes well for the upcoming relaunch of the iconic 90s series.

‘Star Wars Episode VIII’ Meant to be Fun, Will Address ‘The Force Awakens’ Questions

episode-viii

In an interview with USA Today, Star War Episode VIII director Rian Johnson revealed a few tidbits of information regarding the next entry into the main saga. In typical Star Wars fashion, the director held back on specifics, but did note that the next episode would “be a blast,” stating that he was looking for fun instead of dark. He went on to say that we would definitely be delving deeper into the stories of the three heroes introduced in The Force Awakens, Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac). “I wanted to know more about each of them, and that doesn’t just mean information or backstory. Figure out what’s the most difficult thing each of them could be challenged with now — let’s throw that at them and dig into what really makes them tick by seeing how they handle that.” He also stated, to no one’s real surprise, that the Rey and Luke Skywalker would forge a deep connection. Johnson also revealed that he’s known the title of Episode VIII for years now, and that we can expect a reveal very soon.

Tom Hardy Eager for More ‘Mad Max’

rsz_fury_road

Though fans have been eager to return to the world of Mad Max: Fury Road since the reboot debuted two years ago, so far nothing but rumors have come from the desire. Rest assured, however, that star Tom Hardy is every bit as excited as you are at the possibility. In a new interview with The Wrap, the once and future Max said, “I don’t know when that starts, but I believe that’s in the books. There’s a couple of those floating around. I’m waiting for the call to come.” That’s solid news for fans, who found the Mad Max series returning to form in the fourth entry, which came three decades after Mel Gibson last took the role. Things may move slowly in The Wasteland, but it’s better than no movement at all.

Every single one of us should breathe a sigh of relief now that real country music is once again getting the respect it deserves. We can thank the likes the Sturgill Simpson, Margo Price, Kacey Musgraves, and Chris Stapleton, to name a few. Drawing from legends of the genre like Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, Denver-based songstress Leslie Tom is making a point to do her elders proud. Tom avoids the Nashville pop country sound in favor of something more down-home and twangy, and it’s hard to resist. On February 17th Leslie Tom will release a self-titled EP.

Today Glide Magazine is excited to offer an exclusive premiere of the song “My Only Addiction” off Leslie Tom’s upcoming EP. Kevin Moon’s vocal style is reminiscent of George Jones and Leslie Tom balances it out with her own sultry voice. This is a song about drinking and love, and it’s hard not to be infatuated by the chemistry between the singers and the undying charm of the pedal steel guitar. Ultimately, Leslie Tom is making some damn fine traditional country and we should all be happy for that.

LISTEN to “My Only Addiction” and read our conversation with Leslie Tom below:

Talk about the inspiration for this song – what prompted you to write it?

This song was not inspired by my personal addiction to a person but rather inspired by my best friend’s unhealthy relationship with a man she can’t quite let go of. We were talking on the phone one day about another “incident” she had with him and after she told me the story I said, ‘Girl, he is like heroin to you.’ I told her I intended to write a song about the experience. I began working on the song and reached out to a friend named Tony Gunter who had been working on a similar song and we began working together on “My Only Addiction.” We then looped in one of my best gal friends and co-writers, Linda Koehl, to help us put the finishing touches on the song. It’s my favorite song on the new EP.

Is there someone in particular who is your addiction?

I can only assume most people past early puberty have or have had an unhealthy, addict-like relationship with someone in their life. After I divorced in 2006, I dated a guy that was nothing short of horrible for a very long time. I knew he was like a drug to me but couldn’t figure out how to get away from him. When a person is in the midst of these type of relationships, it’s very difficult to get out of them. Luckily for me, I had that experience to pull from, but thankfully, I’m happily married to an incredible husband and father to our daughter.

What was it like working on this song in the studio?

The studio experience was very interesting. We played the song live all year in our sets and I sang the song with my guitar player, Kerry Conner. Kerry does not have a traditional country voice like Kevin [Moon] does so when I went into the studio to cut vocals on the song, it was strange singing the song without Kerry. This was the first time I’ve recorded a duet with someone but not physically been in the studio with them. As a matter of fact, I have a great relationship with Kevin, absolutely adore him as a person and performer, but have never met him in person. I worked on my parts and then he cut his part of the vocals at a studio in his home state of Alabama. It was a very twenty-first century experience.

Got any great stories about working on recording this song – funny, crazy, etc.?

Singing harmony is very difficult for me. I can usually hear where the harmony part is on a song but have a hart time translating the harmony I hear in my head into the note that comes out of my mouth. After Kevin cut his vocals, I had to have Kerry coach me through the harmony parts of the song. It was very, very stressful. I’m also a perfectionist and don’t like when I don’t get my vocals perfect on the first take, and suffice it to say, this was not a “first take” song!

I’m sure you had an idea in your head of what this song would sound like. How does the end result measure up to that idea in your mind?

When I heard the mix and mastered version, I almost cried tears of joy. The song, in my opinion, is spectacular. This whole EP has been a passion project for me. John Macy (producer) and I worked really hard to stay true to who I am as an artist and person, all the while realizing there is a bit of risk when putting out a truly traditional-sounding country record. With this being said, we know our fan-base and what they like to hear. We didn’t let them down on this project and especially this song!

How do you think this song represents you as an artist, sonically speaking?

It’s #unapologeticallycountry!

Heart: Live At The Royal Albert Hall With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (DVD REVIEW)

While most music fans breathed a sigh of relief when the year finally ended, Heart decided to jubilate with a live DVD celebrating a career highlight. For the female-fronted band from Seattle who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2013, it was their first-ever show at one of London’s most hallowed venues and it is captured nicely on Heart: Live At The Royal Albert Hall With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

If this goodie didn’t end up in your Christmas stocking, it’s time to put those gift cards to use. It comes in a variety of packages featuring DVD only or with CDs and Blu-rays and features classic hits alongside newer songs, which in the case with Heart, those can be just as good, proving creativity doesn’t always end when you turn twenty-nine.

The Wilson sisters, Ann on vocals and Nancy on guitar, released their first album in 1976. “They were just a club band and I was a studio musician who was working in the studio where they were working,” guitar player Howard Leese told Glide in a 2013 interview about the making of Dreamboat Annie. “They weren’t trying to make a hit album, they were just trying to make an album. They were excited they were actually in a big studio making a real album. No one had any dreams of selling four million copies and it being a big influential record. We just wanted to make a good record.”

From that record came the iconic songs “Crazy On You,” the title track and “Magic Man,” which they lead off with, rocking out before bringing the orchestra onstage. And this is where Heart really has a chance to shine and their strengths are accentuated with the presence of an orchestra behind them. “Dreamboat Annie,” with Ann on flute and Nancy on acoustic guitar, soars as does “Alone,” a #1 hit from 1987.

“Two,” later in the set from their 2016 Beautiful Broken album and with Nancy on lead vocals is the perfect platform to showcase the beauty of the sister’s harmonies and it makes you yearn for more of this.

The significance of playing such an honored place as the Royal Albert Hall is physically apparent on Ann’s face as she looks around with an expression of pure awe. It also doesn’t hurt that their first appearance here is filled to the rafters with fans who have probably known most of these songs word-for-word for most of their lives. Although Ann’s range doesn’t always reach the higher registers she is known for, she has readjusted, saving her biggest belting for the most important moments without losing the emotions behind them. And although Nancy’s vocals have sweetened with age, her guitar playing remains an unsung hero to their live shows and she’s still kicking up her heels and rocking. The band’s longtime guitar player Craig Bartock is given many moments to show his talents and if you’ve seen the band perform in person you will know what a hidden treasure he truly is.

Seventeen songs in all, Heart fans will be satisfied with having this live visual collection beside all the others. Bonus features include behind-the-scenes footage from Heart’s preparations for their Hall show and the sisters talking primarily about that event.

“We were just young kids trying to do something good,” remembered Leese. Forty years later, Ann and Nancy are still doing something good.

SONG PREMIERE: Big Something’s “Passenger” Resounds With Roots Inventiveness

North Carolina versatile rocker Big Something will be releasing their fourth studio album entitled Tumbleweed, on February 24th, 2017. Having just announced a run of shows with Umphrey’s McGee this spring and this new LP right on the horizon, Big Something is surely about to become what their name suggests. With sensational live shows that make use of no rules and endless possibilities based on BIG energy, BIG musicianship and BIG surprises, the album was a natural step in their progression and based on the darker tone on some of the album’s tracks, poignancy and lyrically conscious song-structure rises to the forefront.

Glide is thrilled to premiere “Passenger” off Tumbleweed, a rowdy rocker that combines both heartfelt bluegrass and rock elements, while delivering a cathartic melody, making for a “cant fail pick me up.”

“Passenger” really took on a life of its own in the studio. We changed up the drum parts a little, added some new pedal steel licks, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and some awesome new vocal harmonies and it all really brought the song to its full potential,” says singer Nick MacDaniels. “This is probably the most unique sounding track on the album with its bluegrass shuffle and country twang, but at its core there’s still a tried and true Big Something rock song about watching life pass you by.”

“Passenger” is one of my favorite tracks on the album because of its North Carolina flavor, “says drummer Ben Vinograd. “We have all come to love Carolina and call it home even though several of us are not originally from here. We’re always surrounded by such great roots and Americana music here and that definitely seeped into our subconscious on this track.”

“I feel like “Passenger” hits really close to home,” adds lead guitarist Jesse Hensley. ”The lyrics are so relatable for so many situations that life can throw at you. It’s a song that everyone can relate to on some level.”

Minus The Bear Return To Suicide Squeeze Records For New LP ‘VOIDS’ Due 3/3

Minus the Bear has announced the release of their new album VOIDS, due out March 3rd. VOIDS is the Seattle band’s sixth full-length album, and first new LP in half a decade. It also marks the band’s return to their original label home, Suicide Squeeze Records, a longtime pillar of the Emerald City’s vaunted indie rock scene. Produced by Sam Bell (The Cribs, Weezer, Bloc Party, Two Door Cinema Club), Minus the Bear started with a blank slate, and inadvertently found themselves applying the same starting-from-scratch strategies that fueled their initial creative process. “There was a lot of change and uncertainty,” says guitarist David Knudson. “I think the general vibe of emptiness, replacement, lacking, and longing to fill in the gaps was very present in everyones’ minds.”

Hear the first single “Invisible” below..

Change was everywhere. Keyboardist/vocalist Alex Rose took on a more prominent role in composition and handled lead vocal duties in Jake Snider’s stead on songs like “Call the Cops,” “Tame Beasts,” and “Robotic Heart,” drummer Kiefer Matthias joined the fold, producer Bell lent a fresh set of ears in the studio, and the band returned to their original label home at Suicide Squeeze Records. Minus the Bear were no longer swept along by the momentum that had driven them for the last fifteen years. Instead, they reached a point where they could recalibrate and redefine who they were as a musical entity. The resulting album VOIDS retains many of the band’s signature qualities—the hedonistic tales of nighttime escapism and candid vignettes of adulthood, the savvy up-tempo beats, the layered and nuanced instrumentation—while simultaneously reminding us of the musical wanderlust that initially put them on the map.

minusthebear

Suicide Squeeze Records is proud to release VOIDS to the world on March 3rd, 2017 on CD, LP and cassette. The first pressing of the album is available on 1,000 copies of Electric Blue (Minus The Bear exclusive) vinyl, 5,000 copies of splatter colored vinyl and 5,000 copies of 180 gram black vinyl. The LP jacket features PMS inks, a die-cut cover with a printed inner sleeve and contains a download code. The cassette version is limited to 500 copies and also includes a download code.
